Also it's 3 am on a Saturday night which means most college kids are either passed out or still pretty much wasted. So don't expect many replies for a while. | ||

Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: my school was pretty easy getting into. i think i only applied to 2 colleges and i got into mine right away with 7k scholarship a year. Graduated HS: 2006 HS GPA: 3.3 (raised to a 3.6 after 1st semester of senior year but they don't look past that) Stats: SAT - 2180 SAT 2 - 720 Bio / 800 World History / 770 US History AP Scores - Eng Lang 5 / Eng Lit 5 / US Hist 5 / World Hist 5 / Euro Hist 5 / Art Hist 5 / Environ 5 / Stats 3 / Bio 3 / Comp Sci 2 / US Govt 5 / Micro Econ 4 one more I forgot Things That gave me and Edge: I had a book of poetry published at age 15... president of Philosophy club, played basketball at school for three years, co-president Amnesty International. Probably the biggest one was being on Academic Decathlon ... that's basically it. | ||

major/minor: economics Year graduated high school: 2005 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): (on a 5.0 scale) 5.0 unweighted, 5.70 weighted (As in honors classes are 5.5 and As in AP classes are 6.0) Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 36 ACT (did not do SAT after that), a bunch of 5s (both physics, calc BC, chem, world history, stats, us history, english literature), SAT II I think I went 590/600/600 in Physics, Math, US History (I think it was out of 600 in my day...) Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: I wrote a personal statement that was about a summer I spent with my friends, not some academic (or non-) achievement of mine. I think it's cooler to be a real person than someone with a wack impressive resume. Things you wish you knew before college: if you go to an elite college, grad school is pretty much the standard nowadays. You need to keep driving full steam to get into a good one. i.e. college isn't the end of the road for pushing yourself in school. | ||

i'd like to see you post the same information too, it's interesting to read what other people are offering to application readers. Colleges applying to: early action to yale, couple other ivy's and duke/u chicago and the like Graduating 09 UW 4.0, 4.6 approx weighted. SAT: 2180, SATII: 770 Korean 760 Math II 750 Chemistry, mostly 4's for AP, 34 ACT composite, i'd like to hear from people that go to top colleges, some rules of thumb when writing a college essay, etc | ||

Major:Biomedical Engineering Year graduated high school: 2008 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.9 Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): SAT:2300 (700 in writing) SAT2: 800 math2, 780 US History, 760 Physics AP: BC 5, US Hist 5, Euro 5, World 5, Bio 5, Chem 5, Stats 5, Environ 5, Macro 5, Eng Lang 5, Eng lit 4, physics 4, French lang 3, US Gov 5 Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Part of Mu Alpha Theta state champion math team for 4 years (did scrapbook for it too), volunteered at hospital for 3 summers, Key Club, some piano and tennis, National Merit Finalist Things you wish you knew before college: College apps take a lot of time. The essay portion should be creative (ie event in life) and personal. Admissions officers already know what activities you do, essay just lets you show more of yourself. Don't submit an essay for college A to college B. You get waitlisted/rejected.  | ||

'07 4.4 1960/2400 AP Calc BC: 4 AP Econ Micro/Macro: 4/4 AP Euro: 4 AP Chinese: 5 AP Psych: 5 Edge: good gpa and lots of extra curricular sports: Swimming 6 years competitive Dragonboat 4 years competitive. Thoughts: Growing up rather liberal and tolerant of others, i realized not everyone was like this. Yeah wish i got a heads up. | ||

That helped me considering my low GPA. Get a good GPA. Oh, and write a GOOD FUCKING ESSAY. That helps IMMENSELY. I got a phone call from one of the professors at my school's philo dept commenting on my essay. Things you wish you knew before college: Frats = Fucking STUPID. Stay the fuck away from them. Learn to cook. Get a job ASAP so you can continue to buy food in case you can't cook like me. Don't expect to find very many smart people in school. Trust me. Even in top schools, you'll be surprised at the number of people who simply lack common sense and the like. It's shocking. | ||

Either way, I can try to offer a few things even though I'm not a 'college kid' unless you count graduate school. One of the tricks for doing well in college is to do research into which professors are easier or better (when you have choices). This applies both for courses in your major, and core aka general education. If you have flexibility when making a schedule, don't get too creative or do a schedule that seems 'really good' because it's going to screw you up... especially in the earlier years of college. I realize my advice is only applicable once you are admitted, but plenty of people here can offer you better and more updated advice. I got into everywhere I applied so I lack some experience in the topic :p | ||

Anyways just one thing you should do: As soon as you hit accept into the college as a metual agreement. Send a copy of your current transcript don't wait for final they will take a progressive one it mean to check what you said you did you did in high school. A lot of college's have a point system of some sort adding shit that you didn't do my mistake like quarter graders to semester will hurt. | ||

I was the "music man" at school...I did orchestra and choir (was a section leader in both) and also took billions of AP classes (as seen above). Things you wish you knew before college: College is really, really different from high school. It sound stupid, but it was really strange for me. I always thought I would adjust really well to college, since I was always hanging around college-aged kids and never at home anyway. But when I got to UCLA, I found out the hard way how different things are. At home, you get to compartmentalize your life...that is, you have your home life, your school life, your church life, etc. When you're in college, all of that becomes a crazy blend, and it's really hard to differentiate and figure out where to prioritize your time. Maybe it was just me, but I wish someone had passed that knowledge onto me sooner. | ||

Major/Minor: double majoring in Biology and Korean Year graduated high school: 2006 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.85 UW (washington state legislature banned weighted grades). I took 14 IB courses during the course of my Junior/Senior years. Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 1420 old SAT, 730 and 700 in Math II and Bio/E. IB Diploma score of 33. Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: very committed in a lot of activities (4+ years in most of them), had a good balance of leadership, academic, athletic, musical, and community service extra-curriculars. IB Diploma recipient. Things you wish you knew before college: (assuming you attend a university that is either a match or reach for you) no matter how much of a big shot you were in high school, chances are in university you'll be very average academically. be humble. | ||

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Graduated hs 08 GPA weighted like around 4.2 cumulative SAT 1980 SAT II Math 2 700, Biology 730, History 720 I was actually ineligible for UC schools so lol I wish I knew the requirements such as the proper art credits. Ya read each college's requirements carefully because I was too cocky and fucked up. | ||

Colleges applying to: MIT, Harvard, CalTech, Carnegie Mellon, others Major: Computer Science Year Graduating HS: 2009 HS GPA: 4.07 weighted, 3.97 unweighted. Stats SAT 1 - 770 CR/780 Math/740 Writing SAT II - 760 Math 1, 730 Math II. Still need to retake both of those as well as Physics AP Calculus - 4 My schedule isn't nearly as challenging as it should be for a college-bound student, but not due to poor selection on my part. I've taken the most challenging classes my school has. We only have two AP courses, and I finished AP Calc last year. They had to invent a math class just for me. It really sucks knowing that my school is crap in terms of academics, and that I'm being stifled by it. Also, to give some perspective on how crappy my school is. The Chemistry subject test for the SAT is supposed to test the knowledge of a general CP chemistry course. My honors class did about half the material on the test. | ||
