7. Ok, the first year it is SO amazingly easy to start to mess around and forget about school. You have no idea right now. You get away from your parents and everyone who knows you, you get with a bunch of cool kids and you start playing even more video games (its true). But remember, that failing your first year can forever hurt your hopes of getting into competitive programs. Grades really mean something now so get the good ones. That being said, your Freshman year is still bound to be wild. Have fun. But not too much.

major/minor: Political Science, Chinese Studies - Japanese Minor
Year graduated high school: 2005
High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.7
Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 1960
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: My high school was an experimental one in the mountains of Taiwan with roughly 70 kids. There was a lot of student-government stuff going on and there were many activities I was involved in.

Things you wish you knew before college: You *really* have to know how to manage your time. Also, don't wait until your Junior year to find people who play StarCraft - there are more than you might think.

Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in:
Test scores certainly helped, plus the fact that I was in a lot of clubs and held several leadership positions. I guess the fact that I was 15 when I applied to college helped too.
Things you wish you knew before college:
College at Caltech is really difficult. Don't come here expecting a 4.0 GPA and an easy time. I rarely sleep before 2 am due to homework. On the other hand, the academic environment is really nice, and the people are really cool. Caltech is good if you like studying a lot and doing research. And the weather in Southern California is awesome.

College currently attending: I'm done w/ school but my history... Washington State University - BA in computer science, Lower Columbia Community College - Pre-med transfer, University of Washington - Seattle - Biochemistry, University of Washington School of Medicine - MD w/ residency @ harborview

major/minor: BA in comp sci, Pre-med, biochemistry, md

Year graduated high school: 2002 (I started college in 2000 with 2 years of college complete in 2002)

High School GPA (unweighted or weighted):
3.1

Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc):
I don't recall SAT.. if you complete a degree at another school SAT means nothing, but I earned a 38 on MCAT's which was on the old system out of 40.

Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Hard work. UWSOM advisor told me that I needed a 37 to get a CHANCE at an interview so that's what I shot for. At the time UWSOM was rated #1 for med schools in united states. I'm not sure what is now.

Things you wish you knew before college:
I wish I had studied medicine right out of HS. I wasted 4 years getting my BA in computer science at WSU before going back to community college for chem/physics/bio to begin pre-med. I actually enjoyed my studies at community college a lot despite the bad rap it has.

i also wish I had started at community college rather than university. The classes were more difficult at LCC than WSU which better prepared me for applying it, the classes are WAY smaller, and the tuition was dirt cheap which meant I could buy a lot more alcohol which is necessary for success.

If your goal is to party go to university.. if you're smart enough for ivy league then go for it ;p

College currently attending: Erie Community College

major/minor: Computer Science

Year graduated high school: Didn't

High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): Dropped out, can't recall GED score

Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 1830 on SAT I think, Took it on 2 hours of sleep with no prep after being out of HS for 6 months.

Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: lol

Things you wish you knew before college: Should have dropped out sooner, HS is a waste of time.

Hopefully this'll help balance out the thread ^_^

major/minor: Biology/Chemistry
Year graduated high school: 2008
High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.98 unweighted
Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): Took the ACT, made a 26 >.>
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Taking many college hours from a local college while in high school. GPA/Class Rank and getting applications in EARLY.
Things you wish you knew before college: College isn't as easy as high school, I don't have two years to sleep in a counselors office there... Don't fuck up, the professors are pretty unforgiving. Also, NEVER contradict the professors beliefs in an easy.. 90% of ALL professors are Liberal.

You'll see me... In graduation '09. Maybe. :p

Edit - the thing is I might transfer to Stanford this year or the next. I've been to counseling a few times this month and it's the likely outcome.
