A thought: another use for your scouting worker...

I was just wondering: of all the things people do with their scouting worker when it's inside their opponent's base, how come I never see anyone trying to delay their opponent's income slightly by having their worker periodically or repeatedly try to mine from their mineral patches without actually taking any (that is, if your worker arrives very early)? Just a thought: not really sure to what extent it would be useful (since it would probably be even more advantageous resource-wise to delay sending a worker to scout for a bit).

Why would that not be allowed?

They could stop it if they were skilled.

seems like you would lose more minerals in pyloning workers than your opponent would

It's called the "manner pylon" among Korean pros - a sarcastic term, if there ever was one. Most recently done by Nal_rA last week in the Challenge League (v Eji on Gaema Gowon. I believe the match was stopped mid-game because of network probs, so you won't see it on OGN VoDs...). Nal_rA actually did it twice in that game. The question of whether it's worth it or not depends on what the player wants to accomplish and against which opponent. The effectiveness of this ploy can't really be measured in terms of simple min v min cost analysis. What is clear is that most professional toss players have done it at least once in competitive play, and it continues to get employed every once in a while, so it must be of some help at least some of the time...

i believe Smuft invented it, too. I think the first time it was seen(in the professional scene) was smuft vs grrrr... rival match game 1, which was a quite exciting game.

I just love manner pylons
Always use them when I can--V
Exept I use them alongside factories (just when they finish, to make them lift of then I cancel and put down another) and in their wall too. And I steal their gas --V And of course I try to get shield bats up and running if vs zerg

When it works, it can be very entertaining ... especially watching the frustration build in the opponent.

But what if they don't chase me around? Or would it be more beneficial to just continuously harass their workers in that case?

I was thinking about this while thinking about instances where the player just grabs 8 minerals away from their opponent's mineral patches and wondering why they don't just stay there trying to mine without actually taking any instead =/ .

They might be trying to do just that- mining and then clicking stop just before taking the minerals (I usually fail after 1 or 2 attempts [failing to stop in time]).

lol
please dont pretend that something like that is gonna have any effect on the game overall because it wont... it might cost him 16 minerals? maybe 24? But at the same time it takes up time, not to mention they can get hits on your scout. Its really not worth your time, better to focus on other things. If you can do it with not impact on your game then go for it...but really its so unimportant

it's position dependent, which is why it's a gay thing to do

Actually it costs them alot more than 16 minerals. You get one off and cancel it at the last second, and trap say... 3 probes, thats gonna be probably 72 minerals.

Naz alot of stuff in SC is position dependent..
I don't see why it working in only a couple spots would mean that it is wrong to do.

The only map which things are "position dependant" is Lost Temple, I don't know why people are still playing that map...

Maybe Lt was played so often, because it the game depends a bit of position. There are 4*3=12 position settings possible, enough to have various games each time.
( I know there are a lot of other reasons, too )

You said that it was 'gay' to do.
I was trying to substitute gay with something else, I don't like saying it too much.

well with gay I mean it's unfair, mean, but not wrong..

Kind of like abusing the 12v3 or 9v6 in tvp at gamei temple. Anyone would use it in a tournament game, or anything that counts, but it's very annoying to lose because of wrong positions, instead of a good opponent.

I wonder if that made sense

It did.
I understood what you meant.

I do it, however.

It comes with the race choice and the map choice IMO.

and as for 12v3, its mega gay.
But i don't think 9v6 is too bad. Maybe I'm just newbie though =)

When protoss is at 6 I dislike it more than 12v3. Mainly because tanks can hit the nexus in those positions.

oh yeah on alot of LTs it can huh.

Mmmm, i agree with ya then.
I was actually thinking P at 9.

In both of those situations i just try to go expand crazy if they try to push up into my base.

It is normally quite hard though.

12v3 i normally try some lame shit like Carrier rush.

On Lt's like gamebugs, either there is water between 6 and 9 base, or tanks cant reach nex.... 12/3 is fixed on a lot of versions with unplayable terrain on 3 base.
