My advice is to check out all the local shops, see what they are doing, check out there portfolios, see how clean nice the shop is.If they dont have a portfolio dont get a tat from them period,if they have unclean habits also stay away.Make sure all the equipment is new(needles, ink, towels) or cleaned properley(autoclave, untrasound, etc.)
Also have some ideas of what you want and talk with teh artist you find that you like.Maybe he/she and you can come up with an origional peice based off designs drawings, and talking with the artist. That way you dont find someone that has the exact tattoo sometimes in the same exact spot ive seen it.
Good tattoos are not going to be cheap at all,and really a general rule is cheap tattoos are usually never any good. Also tipp its just good practice that is if youre pleased with the overall work in the finished product.
Do not go in drunk or after drinking alchol thins the blood making it harder for youe skin to take the ink in.Smoking buds usually makes it hurt worse imo.
Rea;;y just get out there check the shops and talk to all the artist that you find thet you like there work/portfolio.In some cases artist may let you watch tehm work,if you do watch make sure your careful and respectful of the artist and the client. No one wants purple spilled iover there clothes.

I've actually been thinking on getting one of those wire-frame outlines from SC of a probe on my back, really small like 2 inches by 2 inches in plain black.

hey thanks for all the responses , the mario bros bad guy tatt is so awesome hahaha .. Hey Fuddx, really good post, I will deff do that, how much do you think a 9x7 tatt of my picture, full color would be? around 400-500 usd?

this tatoo is going to be with u for your lifetime, so seirously i suggest finding a GOOD artist and paying GOOD money to get one, otherwise u might regret it.
im saying this cuz since im an artist, if i ever do get a tattoo, ill be making damn sure that i cant ever say "i couldve done better...." but rather, " i could never do that in my lifetime.."

Think about it for at least a year. And talk about it with at least 4 expert tattooers.

just got my 4th tattoo Now both my shoulders are covered and my right shoulder/chest are decently covered.
When I am all done I will post pictures. Its a vine design that is "negative" in that my skin outside the tattoo is shaded not the actual vines. My new one is the vines weaving through the holes of a beat up skull with a banner over the top that says "Fear No Evil." Also have "Cave Canem" on my right shoulder and an ace of spades on my left forearm.

When I was thinking about a tattoo that I might like to get and just brainstorming ideas, I thought one of infected Sarah Kerrigan in a ww2 pinup girl pose would be cool

Definitely hit all the art books of any artists in driving distance. Make sure to talk to them too if you can, its good to hit it off with someone who will be driving a needle in to your skin for a few hours.

I have a tramp stamp I got it a few years ago. It's low enough that I can have it covered even while at the beach tho - and it's also to prevent it from getting wrinkly when I grow old. They are daisies with vines next to them.
Here's a question: The vines are much darker than the daisies themselves - would it cost the same amount to get them all of the same thickness?

You could probably get them touched up for cheap

and...
like other people said I would really suggest that if you get tatoos the should have some personal meaning for you, because they are going to be on your body forever, and you wouldn't want to get something that when you are 60 your gonna be like "wow the fuck did I do this to myself for?"
also get them from reputable people, although it might be pricier. Both of mine cost about $275.
I got the one on my back when I was 16 spending my birthday money, and the one on my arm when I was 17 after taking the SAT ... lawl.

No matter what you get, it's gonna look bitchin' when you're 60.

dont get 1 it's a total waste of cash, you could get shitloads of beer for the price of 1 tattoo
always compare all amounts of money to the amount of beer you could get for it
|
don't get a chinese tattoo unless you consult TL first, google, Marcus Camby tattoo and you'll see what I mean

Well said, sir. But while we're there, I'd say Jim Beam is more economical and also more tasty.

hm, I don't see much in tattoos. Would you guys care to enlighten me as to why you get them?
