I have a Japanese dragon across my back, all black and white. It doesn't have any meaning, but I don't think a tattoo must have meaning. It didn't hurt too terribly bad except for across the spine.
Here's a shitty picture of it:
No regrets. I'm thinking about getting a quarter sleeve koi.
itll hurt depending where you get it, or if you have little pain resistance then it will ;x mine is on my stomach, which i was told is a painful place to get it but it wasn't bad at all. one of my friends got one on his ribs and he said it hurt like fuck ;x
get something chinese so you show it off to some girl and be like this one means "passion" because i am very passionate and get to make love and then chinese people can look at your tattoo and think what a fucking retard tattooes i have gonorreah on his arm
or get a tattoo that says "if you can read this you are probably chinese" in chinese characters and then when people who cant read it ask what it is just make shit up on the spot

i think the dark templar is one of the coolest looking units on sc, i follow their principles, their way of life which in turn made me follow the might of Aiur and fight for them until the complete destruction of the terran dominion and of course the wrath of our filthy infested zerg cousins. Although there were some internal problems within these Protossian races, they have never spent another moment when it came to fighting the common enemy.
My advice is to check out all the local shops, see what they are doing, check out there portfolios, see how clean nice the shop is.If they dont have a portfolio dont get a tat from them period,if they have unclean habits also stay away.Make sure all the equipment is new(needles, ink, towels) or cleaned properley(autoclave, untrasound, etc.)
Also have some ideas of what you want and talk with teh artist you find that you like.Maybe he/she and you can come up with an origional peice based off designs drawings, and talking with the artist. That way you dont find someone that has the exact tattoo sometimes in the same exact spot ive seen it.
Good tattoos are not going to be cheap at all,and really a general rule is cheap tattoos are usually never any good. Also tipp its just good practice that is if youre pleased with the overall work in the finished product.
Do not go in drunk or after drinking alchol thins the blood making it harder for youe skin to take the ink in.Smoking buds usually makes it hurt worse imo.
Rea;;y just get out there check the shops and talk to all the artist that you find thet you like there work/portfolio.In some cases artist may let you watch tehm work,if you do watch make sure your careful and respectful of the artist and the client. No one wants purple spilled iover there clothes.
I've actually been thinking on getting one of those wire-frame outlines from SC of a probe on my back, really small like 2 inches by 2 inches in plain black.
hey thanks for all the responses , the mario bros bad guy tatt is so awesome hahaha .. Hey Fuddx, really good post, I will deff do that, how much do you think a 9x7 tatt of my picture, full color would be? around 400-500 usd?
this tatoo is going to be with u for your lifetime, so seirously i suggest finding a GOOD artist and paying GOOD money to get one, otherwise u might regret it.
im saying this cuz since im an artist, if i ever do get a tattoo, ill be making damn sure that i cant ever say "i couldve done better...." but rather, " i could never do that in my lifetime.."
just got my 4th tattoo Now both my shoulders are covered and my right shoulder/chest are decently covered.
When I am all done I will post pictures. Its a vine design that is "negative" in that my skin outside the tattoo is shaded not the actual vines. My new one is the vines weaving through the holes of a beat up skull with a banner over the top that says "Fear No Evil." Also have "Cave Canem" on my right shoulder and an ace of spades on my left forearm.
When I was thinking about a tattoo that I might like to get and just brainstorming ideas, I thought one of infected Sarah Kerrigan in a ww2 pinup girl pose would be cool

Mine was 100/hr, and took six hours just for comparison. Definitely hit all the art books of any artists in driving distance. Make sure to talk to them too if you can, its good to hit it off with someone who will be driving a needle in to your skin for a few hours.
I have a tramp stamp I got it a few years ago. It's low enough that I can have it covered even while at the beach tho - and it's also to prevent it from getting wrinkly when I grow old. They are daisies with vines next to them.
Here's a question: The vines are much darker than the daisies themselves - would it cost the same amount to get them all of the same thickness?
like other people said I would really suggest that if you get tatoos the should have some personal meaning for you, because they are going to be on your body forever, and you wouldn't want to get something that when you are 60 your gonna be like "wow the fuck did I do this to myself for?"
also get them from reputable people, although it might be pricier. Both of mine cost about $275.
I got the one on my back when I was 16 spending my birthday money, and the one on my arm when I was 17 after taking the SAT ... lawl.

I have a tattoo on my forearm, that I really like. I will try and upload a picture later.
The price will depend largely on the design (level of details, color and of course size). I would certainly follow FuDDx's advice on visiting the different shops and checking them out.
If you know someone who has a nice tattoo ask him where he got it. That's how I found my tattoo artist for my first tattoo (i have several).
I would really advice you to think about why you are getting the tattoo. Never get a tattoo just for the sake of getting one. Decide for yourself if YOU want it, not because it would 'be cool' or something like that. That's bs reason for getting one. But if you're into tattoos then go for it!

Hawk's been my name since I was a kid =x No one could ever say my last name correctly, so they used that instead.
I was thinking of doing a shield or something in the middle with an H on it in some oldish kind of font. But I suck at drawing and can't find shit I like.
This would be going on my back btw, probably on the right side. If I was jacked and tan and had balls the size of grapefruits, it would go across the whole thing lol
Anyone here have any bad experiences with color? I think I'm just geting b&w, but I'm curious. I saw my friend get a tattoo of New Jersey that had the Irish flag in it. The orange was bad and ended up turning red and it looked like an Italian flag for months lol

I've heard orange, white, and red are kind of tough to stick. My sister had a tattoo with pink in it that needed to be touched up after about two years.
Teamliquid.net in old english in giant letters across your back?
No? I dunno...
I've been thinking about getting my social security number in a barcode on the bottom of my foot... or my full name in binary across the edge of my feet. Not really sure. Don't really plan on it.
Every time someone tells me they are considering getting a tattoo I think of this:
Not trying to discourage anyone, but I still think it's funny. And old, but still funny. Do choose wisely though as I heard while tattoos can be removed these days it's costly and very painful.
I'm another person who doesn't understand the appeal of tattoos at all. To me, the fact that they are permanent is a detraction. Also, I don't like the idea of defacing the body... at least not for 'artistic' reasons. Tattoos made perfect sense for sailors, but most people don't have any practical use for them, which leads me to believe that tattoo advocates and I will never agree on this issue.

imo if people have a good reason, and are getting a tatoo of something that has great personal value to them, it's fine. You should take a step back and ask yourself if you'd still think the same about your tatoo 50 years from now. If not, then it's probably not worth getting.
However there are lots of different viewpoints and opinions on tatoo's
- Some people are completely opposed to tatoo's - Some people just get tatoo's because "it looks cool"
etc etc, nobody is really right or wrong, everyone's got a different view.
I don't get tattoos where anyone can see them, they're as reserved as anything that means a lot to me. I have Big Dave in black lining, dark blue fill in, in Jersey form written on my back. It means a lot to me, because its been my nickname my whole life, and as stupid as it seems, its the only person that I remain loyal to and represent, myself, among other things. I have 43rd K.O.C in the middle of my back, basically its a neighborhood underground society tattoo (ghetto not random kids in the suburbs), and by underground society, that's pretty obvious. Uhm, I have a cross over my heart, a small one, not too small, but no abnoxious... its shaded lightly on the inside and heavily on the outside, and its reason is pretty obvious. A plain cross, no more pain to it. And I have the front of my shoulder with a big 954 on it, it's where I'm from and I never plan on leaving it. Also I'm getting 3DMB on me, it represents the 3 most powerful men in my family. The moneymakers, the providers, the emotional support and backbone of my family, we all have the same initials despite different names. My dad is the oldest, a wise and strong man. Me, I'm a very good businessman, and good at support. And my nephew who is 10 turning 11, an exact replica or me and my dad combined since me and him raised him basically his whole life because my sister was broke, yada yada, but a family tattoo in all.

heh. i've always had (not sure about here, but in real life at least) a good girl image and so most people dont expect me to have one. heh.
as for why i got it, i got one because i just wanted one, but i also didnt want it to be seen by a lot of people. only to those i show it to. they are daisies because those are my favorite flowers (cheesy, i know) and also because my cat of 12 years is named that - she just died recently.
what i plan on getting after I come back from mexico. just need to get it redrawn cuz i dont want whatever that is in the middle.
i cant decide if i just want it as a hawk or with some kinda crest or shield in the middle.

Does having the artist provide a few sketches cost me anything? And how much is the down payment for when you book it? This is gonna be the size of maybe 2.5 fists on my upper right back
I really haven't bothered reading through every reply, but here is the best advice I can give you.
Get a tat of something meaningful, something you do not mind looking at everyday. The best way to achieve perfection of your image is to actually sit down with an artist you feel comfortable with, and talk to them about it. You probably should pay them for their time if you want best results. Tell them what you have in mind, and get them to make a sketch, and change it to your standards. It might take awhile, but it'll seriously be worth both the time and money spent.
I'm gonna get a tat in memory of my recently deceased girlfriend and unborn child, and I dont want it to be just their names or something shitty, so I'm trying to have it heavily symbolic while retaining a sense of simplicity. Im no artist, so I dont know what the hell It should be... yet.
So, other than that, make sure whatever place you go to is clean and the artist is someone you like, or it's really just crappy for everyone and you could end up with a two hundred plus dollar work of "art" that you regret forever.
Good luck, hope to see a pic of the final product!!
edit: As far as pain goes, It really depends on where it is. I have one of my initials on my shoulder/bicep, and it didn't hurt at all. If you dont mind a slightly annoying scratching feeling, it's all good and worth it, and it doesnt last long at all.
I think that's gonna be second though. I've just always had a thing for sun designs, that's all. The hawk at least means something, and I know I want it.
Here is a tattoo a guy got so he could win Lakers tickets:
There was also this dude in Edmonton that got a huge tattoo of the Stanley Cup over his entire back in order to be qualified for a radio contest. He didn't even end up winning anything.

Yeah, it's quite dependent on what you're doing and where it is and exactly what it is.

thx! Mine arent really visible at work unless i wear shorts, but I don't. I guess it depends alot on where you work and what you do. I have a friend who has tatoos almost everywhere and he studied to be a librarian and got a job shortly after. A "goth rock" librarian, quite an unusual experience. Most of the older ladies and men are almost afraid of asking him about books and stuff.
I'm also looking for a sexy snake tattoo :D Any suggestions? Conditions: 1. Wraps around my upper arm, not too long though. 2. Asian-style (if theres such a thing) as I am Asian.} 3. Snake can't be too thick as I'm not fat and a thick snake would probably cover my whole arm.

If they dont charge you for a few sketches then im not sure they know wtf they are doing.Of course they charge for it they spent time and there ability to come p with a design that they think you want usually at least a deposit of 20$ is suffecient. There isnt any reason they should ask for more unless you are constantkly changing mind niot liking pics etc or its a invovled process with lots of pre work to do.
- Make sure you get a Tattoo from a reputable place.(i.e. do your "homework" Home work= Check out shops, check portfolios if they have no portfolio dont give them the time, talk to the artist see if your vision can actually be relized on the skin. -some qs you may ask yourself or your artist. Is the shop clean?Do they use new needles?Do they have biohazard buckets/seprate trash for blood etc.?Do they have an autoclave and ultrasound cleaner? You are having a sharp object repatidly shoved into your body you dont want to have foregin objects, blood.feces in that do you? -Some general tips to make the experince more pleasable.Eat something before you go and have something with you a banana or something, specially for first timers the adrinolne eats thru your sugar storeas and mayleave youfeeling dizzy and woozy if you dont have some food in you. Stay hydrated. Bring some picture books,a dvd/port dvd player, book(if you can read with pain),ipod or music.Ofen the shops haev cd players tvs and they wont mind listenning to your music, the agian some artist love there music so make sure to ask. Be respectful of the artist and shops space and other coustmers some ppl dont like you coming over and hanging over them while they tattoo/get tatt Over all have fun be sure to comunicate well with the artist you do find so that you booth are happty with teh experince.

I tipped $150 on $700, which may be a bit high but it was technically illegal (his shop wasn't allowed to open yet). I have no idea what the standard is supposed to be.

Yes, some people just aren't in to them.
If you stay in good shape and get them in logical places, deformation isn't a concern.
Some people may have something very meaningful to them that they want to represent. You can't do that with a painting/sketch that you'd just hang on your wall. Not to mention normal art can be lost/stolen/whatever.

Word up.
Looks good Hawk, take care of it. Remember to sunscreen it up whenever you're in the sun too.
got a question: is there anyway of having the tattoo being totally black forever? i mean most of the ones i see of people it's always kinda dark teal-ish and it looks really gay. do the colors fade overtime?
Yes, tattoos can fade. My artist always told me that lots of sun, especially sunburns, can fade a tattoo. I've also heard (not sure about this) that the ink has something to do with it too. You can always get a touch up though.
It may be there forever,It coul be from anynumber of reasons.Keliodeing up from artist going to deep, rough, could be just your skin being sensitive.I have a few spots on a couple tats that depending on weather will "pop" out a little.Dont worry youre normal.
