Some random background info and thoughts: + Show Spoiler + The first Outbreak game seems decent (I've seen a couple of videos of recorded multiplayer games, and I've seen a speed run of all 5 scenarios). Outbreak File #2 is really impressive so far in terms of scare factor (though I've only watched like 2 scenarios, I haven't seen all of them). In terms of videos I've seen (at least on File #2), it seems actually scarier than RE0-3. First of all, the atmosphere is more scarier (I'll link a video). At least in one scenario I've seen (I'll link to it below), there are sounds all over the place from various enemies (that and zombies being behind doorways you have to enter). (RE1 and RE2, most of the zombies were actually kind of quiet a lot of the times.) The major thing that makes it scarier and/or more suspenseful than the other RE games is the fact that zombies are fast (compared to other games, on File #2 at least) and Of course RE3 did it too (and RE1 remake also had the mode with a zombie with grenades following you around too) but in Outbreak File #2, it seems more noticeable since a lot of puzzles and stuff, there are a decent number of zombies are just around waiting to follow you through doors into various rooms. (Edit - Nevermind, it seems enemies don't really follow you through to different areas in the Outbreak series. The cases I watched seemed like very specific cases or other times, coincidental timing on zombie spawns. I'll talk more about it below, outside of the spoiler tags.) Not only that but all the menus (even during offline mode) and doing things (climbing ladders, using a key item, etc) are done in real time (enemies can attack you while you are managing your inventory or in the menu, so you have to be fast) and you can be attacked while climbing up ladders too (though it seems enemies ignore you if you are using or in the middle of using a key item). Finally the Virus Gauge is something that you need to worry about in additional to your health status (though from what I've seen, it's not that big of a deal). The Virus Gauge is basically a time limit and a max health limit (since nothing can reverse it). It slowly goes up by itself and when attacked by enemies, it goes up even more. No item can reverse it (items can slow it down or stop it from going up for a certain duration). Though for the most part, the Virus Gauge doesn't seem like too big of a deal unless you are AFKing somewhere or having a tough time with puzzles I guess (if you are attacked enough that it goes up to 100%, I assume you may run out of herbs or first aid sprays before that even happens). In terms of story and characters, I definitely like the characters and wouldn't mind seeing them return even outside of the Outbreak series. These are just normal people trying to survive (it's nice to see how everyday folk survive compared to like Leon dodging lasers like a boss or Chris punching giant boulders). And also where are Rebecca Chambers and Berry Burton (they haven't appeared since 1)? It's nice they were both in Mercenaries Reunion in RE5 though. (Edit: Rewatching it, it does start off a bit slow, and I noticed it seems zombies don't really follow you to other areas at all. Hmm, maybe it was all just coincidental timing since it seems zombies spawn behind doors randomly when you zone into new areas a lot? Though in this (other) video at 18 minutes 25 seconds, an enemy was just behind the group then it seemed to follow them through to the next area because it appeared at the door entrance behind them once they zoned. (Also that link is to a speedrun of of the first Outbreak game. Also I set it to 18 minutes and 25 seconds in that link, so if you want to watch it from the beginning, set it there before watching the whole thing if you're interested.) So from the above, it seems that enemies (or some of them) can follow you to another area but I do rarely see it (or rarely see something like it) now that I am rewatching it. In the video I'll link to (with Yoko in Underbelly scenario), I guess the case of zombies seemingly following the player were just due to how it seems like the zombies randomly spawn or move behind doors every time you zone (regardless of where they were before?). For the specific video I'll link below, it seems that two zombies followed Yoko from one area to another at the 10 minute mark here but it may have been a random spawn just below the door (not from the door) since from the camera angle, it does look like one zombie actually didn't come from the door but just below it, though one was behind the door due to the knocking. Also just before that (9 minutes and 50 seconds) a zombie was just right near the entrance but it didn't follow Yoko through to the next area. Overall, I guess enemies don't really follow you (maybe in some specific cases like the links mentioned but not much outside of those). It seems most of the cases I thought they were following the player through to different areas are just coincidental timing of random spawns it seems ![]() Anyway, here's a playthrough of Outbreak File #2 Underbelly Scenario (Yoko on Very Hard with Nightmare mode enabled) (It was actually suspenseful for me even when just watching... it's those fast zombies that can follow you to different areas!) (Edit 2 - Now that I rewatched parts of it and noticed enemies don't really follow you through areas (maybe they do sometimes but it seems random), it's probably not as exciting anymore ![]() ![]() The Outbreak servers are offline now (it's single player/offline only). Anyway, the game is actually not bad (I like it a lot and I like all the characters too) even outside of the online mode. It's definitely not as of a deep experience as a typical RE game (since the game is split up into 5 short scenarios that aren't really connected) and storywise, there aren't many cutscenes or much of any story really explained (since it was built upon being mostly a multiplayer game rather than a typical one). (Both games are part of the actual continuity of the main RE series and all 8 characters do survive officially actually). Anyway, if you like speedruns or playthroughs of survival horror games, the Outbreak series (especially File #2 where the scenarios are a bit more lengthy and zombies are faster) are a decent source of that (well again, outside of the story or cutscenes which there aren't much of but if you simply like watching people solve puzzles and dodge zombies then Outbreak series delivers). | ||
