Ubuntu Feisty

damn, that is a slick looking desktop, especially with all that system data and such on the right side. Was it easy to set up? I've been considering installing Ubuntu alongside Vista when I get my new laptop.

What app did you use exactly for the right side?

That would be conky. It's easy to install and configure, usually you just steal someone else's and modify it

jealous of your conky setup, so i added it onto my ubuntu gutsy desktop as well :D

http://conky.sourceforge.net/

http://www.howtoforge.com/conky_system_monitor_on_ubuntu704

and indeed it is really easy. ~5mins. had to comment out "font arial" from ~/.conkyrc cuz somehow it didnt like it.

this last link includes the config necessary to place it on your desktop

update: err.. to the comment about python a few posts up: i dont know any python at all, worked for me. config file is simple to understand and generally, you dont even have to mess with it at all.

update1: this helps too:

Haha well python was made to be easy mostly simple things can be done and all complex things can just be copyed from someone else and modified all programing is the same the only difference is how it looks and python was the last common coding i know of for it you can set it up without knowing python but to reallllly set it up i think ubuntu takes most languages i think i gave up on linux like 4 years ago when Perl, Ruby, Python where mostly the only languages beides C# and mono with little support for java was around. haha so i stick to my microsoft.

also alot changes in 4 years i believe what every half year a new verson comes out of linux basied systems mostly

my pictular problem with it was back then most drivers had to go though an encoder to go from binary to something else becuase nvidia ati ect didnt support linux although i think they give drivers out now of days taylored to the linux kernal

ture coding goes in the GCC and comes out gold! or kills something...

Intrust with binary

You guys should know that saving shit to the desktop might corrupt your user profile and thus make windows xp slow as fuck. You probably have this if it takes 5+ minutes for your computer to shut down.

openSUSE 10.3 Linux with KDE 3.5.8 desktop

Hooray! another openSUSE user.

Btw, Conky is really easy. I just begged TKWL for his script and read the manpage. It took me less than 3 hours to change his script for my system.

you should give linux another try. the newest version are incredible. With openSUSE i did no config management at all, i didn't need to find drivers for my hardware. All the stuff i need to download have a installscript like in windows. its great!

Ubuntu Feisty

Dam what kind of software are you using?

Doesn't seem like windows or mac

It's Ubuntu linux. Free open source alternative to windows, and a lot better imho.

I also have the famous cube:

explain: Linux desktop has a number of workspaces - usually set to 4 but you can pick yourself - and a fancy 3d program makes a cube with one desktop on each side. I can for example put a movie on one side, my browser on another, photoshop on the 3rd and the spin the cube to select another desktop. It's mainly for show but I find it nice when doing useful work.

A "workspace" is the same as your screen in windows.

Must be pretty demanding? Is it possible to dual boot? I'd like to try it
