Games Done Quick is a series of charity video game marathons. These events feature high-level play by speedrunners raising money for charity. Games Done Quick has teamed up with several charities throughout its history, such as Doctors Without Borders and the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Millions of dollars have been raised and donated, thanks to the GDQ speedrunning marathons, and countless prizes have been awarded to those who donate!
Here is the main website for Games Done Quick: https://gamesdonequick.com/
Awesome Games Done Quick is the annual marathon performed in the winter, while Summer Games Done Quick is the annual marathon performed in the summer. This year, AGDQ is from Sunday, January 8th to Sunday, January 15th.
Here is the schedule of all the AGDQ'23 games that will have speedruns, along with the names of the runners, expected run times, the category/type of speedrun, and donation incentives (prizes you can win by donating during a specific speedrun, additional caveats you can create for the speedrunners, etc.): https://gamesdonequick.com/schedule

That's always one of my favorites at these events, so I'm a bit disappointed by it not being on the schedule. Thankfully, there are a lot of other games I'm looking forward to watching!

First day looks great. Thanks for posting this thread, would likely have missed the event if I didn't see it

No problem! I try to keep up with these threads every winter/summer
By the way, here is the link for this week's VODs; I also added it to the OP: https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/106tyto/agdq_vod_thread_2023/

We're 1/3 of the way to one million dollars!

As much as I like AGDQ, I can't seem to find the excitement I once had for the event. I'll watch TASbot and the odd game or two, but that's pretty much it. Still, awesome event though and I hope it keeps up its success!

I tune in from time to time, but will probably just check out some VODs.

Me too... missing crowd, missing couch, not so blown away anymore...maybe thats the beats im missing. Well, maybe change my behavior how i watch the marathon. Doing stuff meanwhile and not trying to cheer every run and moment. Anticipation for the week is still a great pleasure to me.
Also... i really like Feasel and i enjoy watching him... is it just me or does he look kinda bored sometimes doing interviews? ^^x

Over $1 million so far

Worms was really a blast. What you can do with skill and how to control all the worms. Great run and lots of fun.
|
$1.5 million at this point

Worms Armageddon speedruns for Elite in deathmatch is impressive but with the randomization it's not quite the same as watch the campaign get crushed. The insane precision required for just about every shot is jaw dropping. Great showcase.

$2.7M raised across 40K donations
Some information on Mike Uyama's departure:
"Games Done Quick is amicably parting ways with founder, owner and managing director Mike Uyama. GDQ’s speedrunning marathons serve as the community’s premier events. Since its humble beginnings in 2010, GDQ has raised more that $41 million for various charities and now has over 50 staff members. ... Matt Merkle, Games Done Quick’s director of operations will take over Uyama’s responsibilities. GDQ plans to hire a new assistant manager as well." https://venturebeat.com/games/games-done-quick-founder-mike-uyama-departs-gdq-speedrunning/
"Uyama cites his health as the reason he’s stepping away. “So AGDQ 2023 marks my 13th year of GDQ. I’ve been at it for a long time, and I decided it’s time for me to take a break,” he said. “I realized that I need to take care of my health and kind of focus on different activities.” It’s easy to understand why Uyama needs a break. In 13 years, he and his team at Games Done Quick have done a lot. In addition to the marquee Games Done Quick events in January and July, the organization also hosts a slew of regular programming focused on building up the speedrunning community, highlighting beginners and speedrunners from marginalized backgrounds. For women and nonbinary speedrunners, there’s Frame Fatales, and for Black speedrunners, there’s Unapologetically Black and Fast." https://www.theverge.com/2023/1/6/23542796/games-done-quick-2023-mike-uyama-interview
"“I’m not sure where I’ll go next, but one thing I am sure about is that I will take a break and a vacation before diving headfirst into my next adventure,” added Uyama, whose final event will be Awesome Games Done Quick Online 2023 this month. Uyama will be succeeded by Matt Merkle, who is currently director of operations for Games Done Quick. In a statement, Merkle shared that he is “incredibly honoured to be entrusted with the future of GDQ by Uyama” and aims to “build upon the foundation” set by the founder. “I would not be where I am today without Mike and the team he has built. It’s incredible to see how much we’ve grown, transitioning from a group of friends in a basement to a company with over 50 staff members, raising millions of dollars for charity,” said Merkle. “I look forward to working with the speedrunning community and our staff going forward, and I hope to lead GDQ to new fundraising records!”" https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/games-done-quick-founder-mike-uyama-is-stepping-down-after-13-years-3375095
