Microsoft is 100% aware of the current loophole I highlighted. LOL.

Keep up my man, they did the same thing when Starfield released like your article notes.

The 'loophole' is just like all the other 'loopholes' when it comes to Gamepass. They know about it, they don't care because they need critical mass for the sub service to the viable and they know people are going to churn the service to play the biggest release of the year on PC (or Xbox). No reason to not grab extra revenue while they can.

Gamepass is in a perpetual state of wheel spinning, despite the undisputable value, because its not Steam and Microsoft's implementation of Gamepass on the PC has long been poor - games being versions behind the Steam version, other miscellaneous issues like a (potentially resolved) problem of double downloading/installing, games being impossible to remove without reformatting the drive.

It doesn't help that they're sandbagging the release of Activision games in general in the same ridiculous way Nintendo sandbags games for their online service.

If you want a different point of view make the main character female. Can't just put on some samurai armor and run around.

Like it's possible to break the mold and still be historically correct and intresting.
Having a black samurai as an assasin just feels retarded.

Did you not see the terminally online reaction to the new Ghost of Yotei?

Its Ass Creed, a game that plays fast and loose with historical accuracy if you've played any of them because the entire gimmick is basically "what if...".

Its like getting upset that William Adams, an intentional Geralt of Rivia lookalike, beats up on yokai with sick spiritual powers in Nioh. Yeah they could have gone for a more grounded interpretation of the character like in Shogun but the whole game wasn't about following historical accuracy to a tee.

I thought part of the whole AssCreed thing was that it is based around a specific historical figure, though. Like there's debates about whether he was actually a samurai and stuff. Can't say I was invested enough to try to figure out which side of that debate was right though.

Maybe it will be a great game regardless. I have never played an AC game. I loved hitman but I was always bothered with how no one reacted to the bald guy in a suit with a barcode on his neck. Oh wait, now he's in a uniform so it's a totally different guy that we have never seen.

Just feels like the only black guy in Japan might stick out a bit, which typically isn't what you want to do when you assassinate someone.

Edit: Also ninjas are bad ass 🥷

Played AC, AC2, AC2-2, AC2-3, AC3 and AC:Black Flag. Eventually I stoped playing the franchise, because I got tired of game trying to tell me that the guys leaving behind thousands of bodies are somehow the good guys. IDK. Maybe I just got old and grumpy.

Regarding the ninjas - the modern pop culture image of ninjas comes from japanease theater. The real life inspiration of ninjas werent wearing black (because its stupid) and were eradicated by Oda Nubanaga if I receall correctly. Funnily enough its a very similiar story to hashassins which spawned/inspired entire Assasin Creed franchise.

I'm not well versed in feudal Japanese history but from glancing at Wiki, there were female Ninja called Kunoichi starting from 16 th century.
And yes ninja clothes weren't black but dark blue. Not that big a difference

When I buy a Japanese licensed wrestling game I expect Japanese male athletes. Ubisoft should've just played it straight and been 'representational' of the most common skilled fighter of the time period. A Japanese male samurai. How many Japanese males have been the protagonist of an AC game? I am guessing zero. So a Japanese born skilled fighter in an AC game would be new and cool.

Initially, Ubisoft's designer guy said he was a real historical figure. The lone historian making that claim was grifting off it by being 'the academic authority' for several Hollywood projects. Other academics refuted his claims. He responded by acknowledging that his research and publications were actually his own creative re imaginings. He quit his academic position. Ubisoft apologized and altered the position on the alleged real samurai stating they are taking creative license for the sake of the game.

You might notice in early articles he was referred to as a 'legendary samurai' and then later referred to as a 'warrior' after the academic was exposed for his BS.

Ubisoft has been doing a lot of apologizing lately.

I think the last Ubisoft Game i bought was HoMM 6. So i am by far not a fan of that company.

(My reason to stop buying their stuff was the annoying launcher thing in HoMM 6 that regularly broke and sometimes didn't allow for me to play my singleplayer game when there were internet problems or whatever, and that was completely needlessly tacked on top of the steam DRM that the game already had.)

But your hateboner for Ubisoft is kinda weird.

They exist in Quebec only due to huge government subsidies. Outside of a small section of Montreal the anti-Semitism throughout Quebec is nasty.

Quebecois hate-boner for Jews is kinda weird.

I prefer games built organically... Not with massive government subsidies.

It is on sale for $10 USD. There is also a FREE DEMO you can try out before you buy.

It is made by Wayforward. These guys are knocking it out of the park. Their games are great. Atari publishes a lot of their stuff.

Atari rocks, Wayforward rocks. Digital Eclipse rocks. Great stuff all the way around.

This is a post from Jimmy in the nintendo thread praising the devs of Lunark. He claims 'It is made by Wayforward', which we'll assume means 'It is published by Wayforward', as it is made by Canari Games.

Canari Games is an indie game dev based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They almost assuredly benefit from the subsidies Jimmy mentions. So, those subsidies are great, unless they aren't. It's unclear.

All the drama on AC Japan is not surprising. There weren't many historical figure that the franchise used as playable character.

Yasuke doesn't have much historical relevance and the most unique factor is literally just his race. Perhaps they gonna find some way to tie in the bigger assassin creed plot to explain how he got to Japan.

I personally think it's not a bad choice, but then you end up having a black man slaughtering the Japaneses, and potentially going up against Japan legendary samurai.

Yeah but that doesn't mean it can't be controversial. Imagine putting a concentration camp management game on steam and say it is just a fictional video game based on real life events etc.

CoH featured battles where the most Canadians in the country's history died in 1 day. I highly suspect there were very heavy casualties for other countries. Most of the Canadian soldiers entering the battle knew their probability of survival was very low.

Ayn Rand, Aldous Huxley , Harper Lee ... move over. I found the ultimate 21st Century story teller!

https://www.eurogamer.net/assassins-creed-boss-discusses-devastating-impact-of-shadows-diversity-and-inclusivity-backlash

"This echoes the selfless bravery of our Assassin's Creed protagonists," he continued. "They fought for freedom, knowledge and the right to chart their own paths, just as we, as creators, fight to tell stories that matter in a world that grows increasingly divided."

There is no "division" ... Ubisoft is making lousy games and people are not buying them. Ubisoft continues to make lofty, exotic promises to the general public. The general public then gets angry when the games fall very far short of Ubisoft's extensive, detailed promises of a great game play experience.

Next, Ubisoft muddies the waters by taking a small # out of the billions of people in their target audience and picks apart the manner in which Ubisoft is being criticized.

In conclusion, video games are an ineffective means of story telling. This guy is a well paid, government sponsored clown.

If it were just about good games, then there wouldnt be all this backlash over games based on cultural or political reasons would there?

Here is a summary of the problems...

the cultural and political stuff is a small factor. The cultural/political stuff is an effect or a symptom of a disease. The root cause of the disease is a poor game making process.

I'll add that government funding and the processes required to acquire the government funding create companies that are great at collecting government money; getting money from consumers is only an after thought. You end up with video game studios that are not organically created.

it is not all doom and gloom though. Atari is kicking ass. Their CEO Wade Rosen is doing a great job.

That Intellivision t-shirt is awesome.

What makes taking advantage of government subsidies especially different from beneficial corporate tax regimes or indeed other forms of outside investment?

It helped Ubisoft anyway, they’ve certainly lost their way IMO in recent years but I wouldn’t attribute it to that.

Eidos Montreal made some fucking kick ass Deus Ex and Tomb Raider games if nothing else, and hey I had a good time

I just don’t understand how your various viewpoints join up. You continually say that the US has better opportunities than Canada and bemoan that, but you also dislike a program such as this which keeps opportunities available to native Canadian developers

He'll also praise games made exactly using these subsidies and not recognize the irony.

It isn't a consistent ideology. The hipocrisy exactly lines up with him declaring that such-and-such group needs to just stop being whiners, followed immediately by him whining about some shit.
