I think people generally have an idea of what is meant when the term “racial discrimination” is used and it’s not calling black people black people even if it’s technically true.

But if we must belabor this point I would say just apply the golden rule for the types of racial discrimination that should be avoided. If an Asian person wouldn’t want to be excluded from a party because of the color of their skin then they shouldn’t exclude white people for the color of their skin.

How big on a scale of 1 to 10 do you think this holiday party is? Why do you think it is getting attention?

I think it’s getting so much attention because of the blatantness of it. Since MLK we’ve been striving forward a color blind society and while not there and may never be perfect, we’ve all generally agreed for the last 4 decades or so you shouldn’t exclude people because of the color of their skin. It’s really a very recent phenomenon that it’s become popular to say MLK was wrong, what we need is more discrimination and more segregation. That’s why this is getting attention.

That works great if society in the USA is currently treating all races equally. Unfortunately, it isn't.

edit: but the golden rule is generally a good rule of thumb regardless... it just can't be relied upon 100% due to inequity.

As you pointed out before it’s not a uniquely USA thing or a uniquely white thing. Everyone has prejudices and subconscious biases. We can try to do our best and have a little grace with each other or we can try to out-discriminate each other in a tit for tat free for all of the races.

What if I told you this was part of building a color-blind society? That this was about reducing the effects of discrimination? That having a black woman as a Supreme Court appointed was about building the nation towards a color-blind society?

We go back to having to explain that racism still exists and you have to counteract racial discrimination to equal situations for poc and non poc. the people who are saying mlk was wrong are the ones telling people to stop fighting racism and just accept it.

If you told me that part of building a color blind society is by seeing everything through the lens of race and discriminating accordingly, I’d say it makes perfect sense that that would be something you believe.

I think it's getting so much attention because race is a large political issue in the US and a bunch of white people are upset that their freedoms are being infringed upon so they feel like they're losing something even though they're not losing anything. You want the world to be color blind? Try not shitting your pants when a bunch of PoC want to have a secondary holiday party with each other.

It beggars belief to me how many people still take at face value the claim that Trump is a fascist. He's pretty much the exact opposite. Do people actually understand what the term fascism means? He had a full term as president. What did he do that was so fascist? He appointed constitutionalists to the supreme court. How exactly does that aid a fascist takeover of the USA? He allowed the states to manage the pandemic (and in so doing allowed the blue states to show themselves tyrants).

Is it just because he attacks the media that people still insist he is a fascist?

I'm going to explain why Trump is winning. It's because the "progressives" of the day have been utterly consumed by their shadow cancer. I no longer believe it is possible to reason with them, nor apparently to reason with people who think the "progressives" represent compassion and tolerance. But what it is possible to do is antagonize them, in fact it turns out that it's really very easy to do. And in so doing these "progressives" show themselves to be the intolerant ones day after day after day. The American public notices as all the shadow comes to the surface, and the facade of compassion and tolerance begins to crumble (rather quickly, I might add). This is the strategic campaign Trump has successfully conducted.

It's still ongoing with the indictments. Reminds me of the Soviet Union. The Democrats will continue to hemorrhage support as they continue showing themselves to be the very worst of what they have been accused of. And I say that as someone who was previously left leaning.

Indeed. If you're up for it we can give it a whirl, though I think you'll need to contribute something more than this. As I said, it doesn't seem possible to reason with progressives any further.

You really don't see a difference between a "protest" and storming the capitol building to overturn an election?

Also, fascists always make up reasons for why they have to overturn democracy.

I agree, hence we see the efforts to remove Trump from the ballot or find a reason to jail him. Lavrentiy Beria would be proud.

I notice that lack of recognition of the more significant point from Simberto's post. I don't sense a lot of good faith here.

Again, if you think the election is fraudulent, it is appropriate to protest. You won't entertain the possibility that people were protesting in good faith, calling it all just an insurrection to overturn democracy, all after protests lit cities on fire. Those are the accusations which do not meet the standard of good faith.

At work today, Miss America (2023) came to speak. That might seem a bit odd, but I learned that she just graduated with a degree in nuclear engineering and her area of focus for advocacy efforts (which Miss America typically does) is clean energy, including nuclear in particular.

The most interesting part was when people asked her how our country differs from other countries she visited in terms of nuclear as a policy issue... of the things she said, one was how most of the congressmen and senators she's met with were very supportive of nuclear power, but weren't willing to admit it except behind closed doors.

Only three were actually opposed at all, of >50 I believe.

edit: Of course, there can be some bias in which ones she actually met with, given that her "platform" isn't exactly a secret.
