Snoozer of a DNC opening day. Virtual convention. Pre-taped speeches, some allegedly from before Kamala was announced.
A strange woman claiming her dead dad's only precondition was trusting Donald Trump. I don't really think the political gain from the lady giving Trump the middle finger on her dad's grave is a good move. I'm a little far from the Democratic base so I could be wrong.
Cuomo bragged about his covid response. He's arguably had the worst, fudging the numbers of his nursing home deaths and seeding cases throughout the country. The year 2020 does mean the guy that let a full sixth of his nursing home patients die receives applause.
Kasich stood at a literal crossroads to talk about America at a crossroads. I wish he had chosen to drop out when the crossroads were Trump or a conservative challenger, and he chose to stay at the crossroads and make sure Trump was selected as Republican nominee. But he's a former Republican candidate now speaking at the Democratic convention, so I suppose playing spoiler to Trump challengers isn't really something he should care about anymore.
America let Michelle Obama down again. Eh. The quality of the other speeches made this one better.
The little musical number after Michelle was hilarious and I recommend a google and watch.

From what I understand the hearing recently by the full court of appeals did not go well for Flynn and his team and judge Sullivan may get his hearing on the dismissal rather then being forced to dismiss the case.

That's correct, the full DC Circuit was angling heavily towards doing the opposite of the original panel decision.

Assange isn't a US citizen, so Trump pardoning him seems unlikely.
Also, isn't pardoning done after the court finds someone guilty? Pardoning someone in advance seems like something else... I dunno, granting them immunity from prosecution for that specific crime or so, which is obviously a very different beast, as part of what goes on in court is to expose exactly what happened and why that is illegal (or not). Skipping that step and going straight to "no matter what happened, I declare the person immune to prosecution for it" seems very dangerous, even if in this case it is pretty much entirely clear what happened as all involved parties never stop speaking about it.

Nixon was pardoned in that manner. Presidents can do it (for federal crimes).

Surprising she wasn't already pardoned

While hosting a controversial anti abortion group that believe with questionable "proof" that woman served their cause.

It says a lot that they don't trust their own base that they didnt do anything on reddit or YouTube for the convention. Having a week of podcasts and YouTube videos and amas would do far more then unmemorable fauxconvention speeches.
Chapo trap house herb dean and dws walk into a bar. Everyone would talk about it. Even stuff like AOC Hillary and Michele Obama on a podcast would move the numbers more then pretaped speeches.
|
They only gave AOC 60 seconds to speak and featured Kasich. I'm pretty sure they don't give a shit about their base.

It just didn’t matter this time around. Day 1 got panned by critics. Maybe Day 2? But it’s not the same this year. Bernie had an live blooper, but it was probably more endearing than embarrassing.
The closing was cringe.
I really only wanted to hear Michelle and Bernie. Bernie made a hard play for Biden as vessel for progressive change. Good luck.

They're playing to the Republican base that does not want to do anything with Trump.

Yeah the entire idea of a televised convention is kinda meh at this point. The progressive wing of the democratic party will likely be saving all the AMA and similar stuff until October. They really don't need to go too crazy yet. Still august. Internet age means we're years from the election atm.
Edit: To elaborate, no one under the age of 50 cares about a convention. Conventions are just boomer food.

They can do all the interactive things they want online anytime, it does not have to be now. I find having Kasich inexcusable. The rest, whatever. Conventions are always awful.
Are there some fence-sitting republicans who could be convinced to move over via Kasich speaking? Probably.
Not nearly as many as there are democrats who are going to be annoyed that they gave a GOP presidential candidate a speaking role at the DNC convention, though. Kasich talked like a moderate but had a far right record on everything except medicaid as a governor. If he wants to rail against Trump, he can already do that on msnbc and with all the other never Trumpers.
It's yet another flashing warning sign to me that the democratic leadership WANTS to become a Never Trumper party. That's a combination of some of the least popular stances in politics with some of the worst decision makers of all time. They're good at PR. That's it.

The convention has been embarrassing so far imo.
The most pathetic part (tough to compete with that closing musical number and several Republican speakers) is how stupid they think their supporters are. They had Kasich there to assure Republicans Biden wouldn't govern to the left of his campaign and Bernie there to say he will (if pushed).
