In just about every other social setting, people are generally expected to exercise some amount of decorum to each other. Call it mutual respect maybe. Yet on the Internet people shamelessly proclaim how rude they are and doggedly insist on their right (not just a matter of right, that is is actually desirable) to continue to be as rude as they want, regardless of how other people might feel.

I don't know, everyone who says "get a thicker skin" just sounds like a teenage trying to be edgy and hardcore. All the adult professionals I know and follow have said "it doesn't matter how used to it you get, it only takes one shitty getting under your skin comment to ruin your day. And you don't control when that happens." There is nothing brave or amazing about being a cynic and not trying to improve things. If anything, being a cynic is the least brave and "tough" way to be.

What? that's the shit adults told kids for the longest time.
are adults now edgy teenagers? rofl.

While also championing how tough they are that they can deal with such a toxic environment. But a single person talks about trying to make that environment less toxic and the whining comes out in full force. If their skin is so thick, why do they get so worked up over people talking about making parts of the internet a nicer place? Irony level over 9000.

Edit: wei2coolman: I am an adult and I tell kids lots of things. I never tell them to "get a thinker skin" when they are harassed. People who do that are assholes.

so if you'd have a 50/50 split in whatever you want - power, opportunities, representation and so on - you think all harassment will stop?.

It will be mitigated for sure. Stopped, no, but mitigated. And the real serious harassment will be less common. This happens in all groups and societies where there is one dominated demographic that is slowly changing to become more diverse. There is harassment and bad behavior. Some groups deal with it better than others. But as there is better diversity in the group, there is less resistance to the changing ideas.

In short, change is hard and resistance is common. How willing people are to address the resistance and aggression is the real thing that needs to be worked on.

i will need more insides here. through what means will the harassment be mitigated?.
- would more power to women means(to you) that they'll be able to force things to go the other way?. you'd stop the harassment by force? (i'm including here all kinds of rules, laws legal or civil and not (only?) physical force)).
- once you get the power, do you(women) expect to inherit some kind of respect/fear which would make male harass you less?.
- magic?.

@levelping: i'm not saying you're wrong but i'm just trying to reverse engineer some piece of logic here.
And my fury stands ready. I bring all your plans to nought. My bleak heart beats steady. 'Tis you whom I have sought.

So when you get angry at people in real life, do you readily (as readily as you would online) call them shit/noob/fag/i hope you get raped/cancer/i fucked your mom/homo/black etc.? I am pretty sure (and hope) that you do not.

Yes, we have one medium where people can actually express themselves openly without being dogged by mindless masses obsessed with political correctness, and you want to take that forum away? Restraint and decorum have their place. It is not the internet. Never never never, please.

See again with the extremes. Having basic respet in a conversation isn't an obsession with political correctness. It's basic respect! And it really is starting to sound like you want the internet to specifically be a place where people go to be assholes. But like... why do we need to be assholes in the first place? I am sure you don't wake up thinking man I need to insult 40 people today, but I can't in real life, thank god the internet is there to fulfill my daily asshole quota.

Yes, we have one medium where people can actually express themselves openly without being dogged by mindless masses obsessed with political correctness, and you want to take that forum away? Restraint and decorum have their place. It is not the internet. Never never never, please.

Pretty much this. I like my 4chan the way it is. Nevar change plox.

This pretty much sums it up. You know, no one is making you leave 4chan. People just want the bullshit to stay there and not bother other people.

the problem with shitty useless platitudes, and fake niceties is, nothing actually get conveyed.

I rather know when I'm talking to an actual asshole, rather than a fake asshole trying to be play nice. Of course, you and levelping would rather we all be grey blobs

There is a diffrence between being insulted in person, most likely by a co-worker or person you actually know/care about, because seriously.. Customers can't do that shit to you, trus me, and being insulted by some random voice you'll never see again in some online game which is most likely about killing each other.

People who do that are assholes.

lol. I guess all of humanity had it wrong for the longest time.

getting thicker skin is pretty much that nursery rhyme of sticks n stones.

What? that's the shit adults told kids for the longest time.

yes, because people never get angry at people in real life... ?

So when you get angry at people in real life, do you readily (as readily as you would online) call them shit/noob/fag/i hope you get raped/cancer/i fucked your mom/homo/black etc.? I am pretty sure (and hope) that you do not.

I call um a fucking idiot, and get on with my life. Similarly I've had racial slurs said straight to my face before, I just laughed and walked away. Your point?

2edgy4 me. We have an internet bad ass here.

What if I told you not everyone was like you and its a shitty attitude to assume people should just endure harassment and racial slurs because they don't bother you?

Pretty much all of human society will disagree with you. You can be polite and still be an expressive individual. Most people manage this. And again it's about being polite, not platitudes and fake niceties. I am sure you can understand the difference - you can be firm, and direct, while stilll being polite.

The disgruntled reaction to redefining (clarifying) sexism is ridiculous. I can't believe how silly this thread has been.

But what people are talking about isn't being called names in a video games. This is harassment. Finding peoples phone numbers and facebook accounts. Spamming their twitter account with pornographic images. Calling their parent's house because they found the number. Women not signing up for public, live tournaments because they are harassed in person. I had a friend who is a MtG judge get harassed by a bunch of ass clowns at Pax East because she was the only women judge working that day and they didn't like being told where to sit by a girl(in an tournament with assigned seating).

This stuff has zero to do with things like 4chan and people take it seriously because it is. And acting liek its the exact same as getting called names in a CSGO match is just idiotic.

I love the sophistry in that Sarkeesian tweet on sexism. Basically, "define" an ambiguous word by saying it consists of two more ambiguous words added together. For fun we can construct more indisputable truths that way:

No dog can be beautiful. Beauty equals desirability plus attractiveness. Cats are more desirable than dogs.

No American can be discriminated against. Discrimination equals prejudice plus power. The USA is a powerful country.

I don't know if it's deliberate dishonesty or just genuine ineptitude, but this is the main reason why these discussions devolve. One must clarify their terms at the outset. The more loaded the term is (say sexism or prejudice), the more precisely it should be broken down into simpler terms or analogies. Instead, the opposite seems to happen, and endless digression or insults ensue.

It's funny because I was thinking the same stuff about your comment. It shows a complete lack of understanding about what is even being suggested in the tweet. I can't blame you for not understanding the tweet in isolation but I can blame you for not reading up on what it meant.
