In order to maintain some kind of respectable thread quality and to show some respect for those who lost friends in this tragedy, we're forced to enact a hard line policy for this thread. Any posts holding an opinion on who is responsible or making an accusation that is not held by neutral media will be banned. Policy is in effect from page 27 onwards.

Specifically, citing a Ukrainian or Russian source for your claims is going to get you banned. Opinions/facts/accusations arising from neutral media sources (i.e. media whose country of origin is not Ukraine, Russia or one of its puppet states) will be permitted. This policy extends to all forms of media; if a youtube video or picture has not come through a neutral media source then don't post it or you'll be banned. If you wish to discuss this policy please use this website feedback thread.

Updated policy on aggressive posting and insults.

Incredible to allow planes to fly over that area. Its a war zone.
Several planes have been shot down in the weeks before, some of them at high altitude.
Cant believe that the organization wich isues air restrictions for aircraft didn't close this route.

The trouble here is that there really is no credible third party, unless you want to involve the Malaysian government or something. One group or the other will strongly object to Russia, the US, and EU country, or anyone within any of their spheres of influence, which pretty much means the entire world.

Malaysian Air should have gotten the black boxes at the very least.

This, but would they? Especially with everything that is already going on in that area. I feel that it wouldn't be an easy task with time ticking on how fast the suppose looting* began.

The Netherlands as the leader of an international investigation that involves Boeing, locals, Malaysians and Russians should be the most likely course of action. There really is no way around any of those being involved.

so i just found this thred and i have a question:

who is responsible for shooting this plane down?
or there is no info on this yet?

This is a lifenews broadcast shortly after the plane was shot down. They didn't know yet it was a passenger plane and they are saying that the rebels down a Ukrainian AH-26 transport plane. Once it turned out that this was a commercial plane, the Russian news of course starting saying all sorts of different things.

The location they mention (Snizhne) is where the Malaysian flight was shot down and no Ukrainian army planes had been shot down there, thus making it very clear that it is referring to this incident and not a previous incident

A rough translation for non-Russian speakers (not mine but from reddit- but I double checked that it's legit):

+ Show Spoiler +

Rebels reporting of hitting down another plane of Ukrainian army, it happened in city Torez, Donetsk republic. It happened in 17:00 p.m Moscow time. Over the city was flying Ukrainian AN-26, suddenly it was hit by a missile , was explosion, plane began to fall. I will add that it happened near city Snezhnoye and Kurgan-mogila, controlled by rebels.

According to tracées from flight aware the plane was flying in a more northern corridor than what it has done in recent weeks. It is not unusual to fly the same route using slightly differing routes, but it is slightly off the pattern to fly over Donetsk compared to Berdyans'k, Mykolaiv or Sevastopol (july 12 another outlier).

A London-based correspondent of Kremlin-funded news channel Russia Today has resigned in protest at its coverage of the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

Sara Firth, who worked at Russia Today for five years, described the channel’s reporting of the crash in which 298 people were killed, including a former BBC journalist, as the “straw that broke the camel’s back”.

Russia Today, which has been criticised as a propaganda mouthpiece for the Russian government, suggested Ukraine was to blame for the crash, while most media organisations have said it was shot down by a suspected Russian-made missile.

Didn't earlier one reporter left RT due their reporting about crimea?

One did it on air, another didnt quit but had an editorial free on air discussion about their lies.

german media changed and now are on super anti putin track with pictures where he looks like crazy dictator ... typical media ...

also german media say nato gave proof that russia send heavy anti air weapons to ukraine, but still nato as "enemy" of russia isnt the most rilable source so anyone has other sources for that ?

also media say that it was "Igor Strelkow" because he should have said on facebook about a successfull shoot before they knew it was a civilian aircraft and also some talk recorded

but i only have german "media" which i not rly trust so i would like to get some inernational media sites if possible for that

but to be honest who cares who shoot ,,, its just such a tragic accident (god hope no one WANTED to shoot a civilian aircraft)

Reuters reporter had a picture of the buk missile launcher in the general area where the Malaysian air was shot down the day before. the terrorists also deleted their own tweets about owning a missile launcher of the same type after the plane was downed.

german media say thta Igor Strelkow posted a few minutes after the shooting of the boing that the seperatists shot a uktraine army transporter ... but still the only proves they provide are some posts in vcontacts which should be like the russian facebook

and the media WHO saying this are known for saying alot of "things" without having a proof so ...

also the youtube video where the guys talk to each other is from ukraine military service so i have no idea about its truth
if anyone have more informations would be cool to get them

And that is the typical German position on Russia, don't worry, I don't understand it either.

Because that's exactly what he is. He is redrawing borders on this continent and his support of the pro-Russian seperatists has just cost 300 people their lives.

But soon enough, that record was edited to portray a different side of the story. The same article reports that a Moscow IP address from a computer at VGTRK, the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, replaced the earlier edit with the sentence, "The plane was shot down by Ukrainian soldiers." The discovery was made by a Twitter bot that tracks anonymous Wikipedia edits made from IP addresses used by the Russian government.

Seems like the BBC is one of the only media outlets looking to better incorporate social media, both as a means of communication and as a theatre of conflict itself, and for that they get my applause.
