Don't forget TriHex setting off the fire alarm with the speed of his mashing in Yoshi's, rofl.

Watching all this Speedrunning really gave me a taste for it, time to load up some half life 2 and get to work. Rofl. Seriously tho, between HL1 and 2, which one would be easier for a beginner? Also The Swapper seems like it would be fun too lol.

Also, sad to see the SDA Marathons come to a close, really is my favorite week of the year, so much content, such a good cause, and many good times.

I started learning HL2 a week or so ago, and it's honestly not that hard to get in to. Between built-in console commands to look at where clip brushes/triggers are, built in quicksaves/quickloads, and gocnak's ghosting mod features (displays speed, built in timer, ghosts) it's really easy to practice the tons of crazy tricks "required" to get a good time.

That said, my first run was 4 hours long (Orb launch took FOREVER to understand T___T) and I've had crashes at almost everywhere in the run, so it can try your patience. But my goal is just to get a sub 2 hour time, and I'm having fun getting there. Do recommend.

Most speedrunners' advice on choosing games to run is something like this: "Do you like the game a whole lot casually? If you do, run it. If you didn't find it fun before, you won't find it fun to speedrun."

Also, gocnak has a 3 hour tutorial on twitch which ive been watching, alot to take in thats for sure. The thing is most people run HL2 with Source Engine (build 5135), whereas most of us are using the latest "Steampipe" version, which apparently has some issues for speedrunning, but is still doable. I actually made a small post on Reddit asking about the differences, here My post. Seems like it may be worth getting that Source Unpack version going, which as far as i know we can only get my messagin Yalter in Steam for a link, which to me is odd. But imma scour google for maybe another link somewhere. Anyways, GL!

Lemme know if you get your hands on the source unpack. I haven't noticed any tricks not working, but I'm kinda hoping the stability issues are beacuse of steampipe.

And yeah, that tutorial is sick. The only real new tech is this crouch clipping + save and quit, as far as I've noticed, so the fact that the tut is almost a year old doesn't matter that much. Half the fun for me is finding my own setups for ABH launches etc anyways, so the fact that a lot of those have changed doesn't really mean much to me :D

Trihex didn't even plan on going until like 2 months ago, and even then only because everyone else was going. Any% Yoshi's Island was offered by Crispy, which ended up getting rejected due to the fact that they wanted more variety and Yoshi's Island is more or less a lock in for AGDQ each year, plus the fact that Yoshi's Island has been in every *GDQ since the very first one.

Maybe its just me, but fucking ABHing seems so inconsistent for me, its like 30% of the time i can get it, the rest im just hopping like an idiot with not extra speed, guess more practice i suppose.

The GDQs game selection has been questionable for the past 2-3 events now. Very few PC games and they claim to not want to have the sames games twice in a row but they keep having the same Mega Man and Metroid segments.
AGDQ 2014's lineup was actually very weak (that's of course a personal opinion, though it's shared by many more speedrun friends) and SGDQ was only slightly better. I hope 2015 will go back to the same hype levels I had when watching the previous years.

i was really excited to see carcinogen and mexiricanbassmonkey race trauma center: second opinion on the preliminary schedule but it seems they didn't bother to practice it at all to do it at sgdq. really disappointed on that point.

For PC games at least, they've always said they're hesitant to add them because of additional setup time that is usually required and the numerous other problems PC games can have. A pretty good example of this was the Super Meat Boy run. Something was running on the PC that was causing the physics of the game to behave differently and they didn't figure out what it was until halfway through the run (and up until they fixed it,the runner was having a lot of trouble with it). Also in Witwix's I Wanna Be The Boshy run he mentioned that the computer he was using was the only one he found at the event that could run the game properly (I assume he meant a high enough framerate). Considering that plus the risk of random crashes it's somewhat understandable that they don't add a whole lot of PC games to the schedule.

Nah thats an incorrect statement by witwix, Boshy worked on all computers but one practice computer didn't have internet. Boshy forces you to update the game and therefore he could only find a way to play on the third difficulty rather than two on the practice PC's.

Super meat boy is unfortunate and I could see runners straying away from it for awhile. AGDQ meat boy race had massive tech issues there as well.

To be fair, megaman and metroid are some of the corner stones in gaming, period. Its the same if you complained about zelda or mario games. Its why doom/quake are on the list every time, you have to give respect where its due.

I think PC games are ran less in general, check speedrunslive out and see how many PC games are being played compared to console games. Right now its at least 90% console games, or PC games that are trying to bring back the feelings of old console games.

It's not that they are not running PC games, it's that they only run old games except those in a franchise and occasional outlier. There is practically no ps3 / 360 game. Problem is that their target audience are people with disposable income, which means steady job, late 20s minimum, and are suckers for nostalgia. All the kids flooding kappa in the chat might enjoy newer games, but how many of them can donate more than their 20 bucks of beer money.

PC games aren't big among US speedrunners.

I would say that PC games are also simply worse games to speedrun. Old popular games for the PC were shooters, which is the one genre people run all the time and it's always featured, strategy games, which suck, and stuff like Baldur's Gate or Diablo that take too long. Those plataformers or early 3D games that people love to run are just so much more common for consoles, and the few examples for PC like Commander Keen/Jazz Jackrabit/etc. also get some exposure. I can't think of a single PC game that isn't a FPS that I used to play when I was young and that I feel would make a good speedrun.

Add that to the technical issue with running early windows or even DOS games, or patching and PC specs for recent games, and it makes sense that there aren't that many people that run PC games.

I can't decide if I think Naegleria is the best thing or the worst thing about GDQs/GDQ Bonus Stream specifically. Solidly on the fence.
How did the experience of working at Mr Burns' Nuclear Plant influence Homer's composition of the Iliad and Odyssey?

I haven't watched this bonus stream, but I had a pretty similar feeling after AGDQ. Have there been any Mario Party money matches yet? Those are the best.

Just be back....and Doshin the Giant. O.O Game is average and has many flaws, but the idea, on which its based around, is lots of fun.
