Summer Games Done Quick is here!
Livestream: http://www.twitch.tv/speeddemosarchivesda
Schedule : https://gamesdonequick.com/schedule

Summer Games Done Quick 2014 is a speedrun marathon of 7 days. Experienced speedrunners are invited to complete a variety of games as fast as possible. The event is meant to collect donations for Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Please donate generously! Once it starts, it doesn't stop. Games are played continually for the whole period of the event.

SGDQ does a good job keeping the viewers entertained with a variety of games, prizes to win and giving the players various challenges to add in their speedruns. From any% fastest possible to 100% completion, each run is done in a unique way.
Special Events
During the marathons, there are several special events to entertain!
Prizes — Donate for a chance to win great prizes such as hand-knitted plushies, perlers, artwork, games, and even big grand prizes such as a real metal Master Sword, or a Wii bundle!
Donation bids for runs — As with every SDA marathon, you can donate for file names of your choice and for certain challenges in runs. However there are also challenges for different routes, character choices, difficulty levels, and more!
Races — If the excitement of seeing games demolished by speedrunners wasn't enough, then don't miss the intense speedrun races! Runners face off against each other to beat the game in record time!
Bonus Games — Throughout the event, opportunities will arise for some of your favorite games/runs from previous marathons to be showcased despite missing from the schedule.

How to Donate:

How can I donate? What about putting my money towards a donation incentive? What about leaving a comment?

First, go to the donate page. Enter your donation amount at the top left. Then on the right is a list of incentives to put your donation towards. Use the filter to search for key words (eg. bonus game, runner's choice, and so on) and allocate it how you like. During the donation process you'll be asked to leave a comment, these comments will appear in the donation tracker and might be read on stream as well! Don't go looking for prizes in the filter though - as long as you enter at least the minimum donation for any given prize, you will be eligible to win that prize. Once your donation is received, it will appear on the donation tracker: https://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/10

I was just looking to make this thread, since I knew SGDQ was about to start.

So much Hype!

Especially excited for the WC3:TFT run because RTS, and the metroid fusion race, because kirbymastah's SGDQ 2013 100% run, and the super metroid 4-way race from AGDQ 2014 are two of my favorite marathon runs ever.

Really looking forward to this. I have a whole week of nothing to do, so having SGDQ on 24/7 is not going to be a problem at all!

Notch is always really generous during these events. Getting an early start this time around. Always cool to get support from folks in the game industry.

Edit: With FF6 being the finale, and a lot of character names up for grabs, that may be a good target if we want to work on naming something. Celes tends to be the hero for most of the glitchless route, though several other characters are used quite a bit as well.

Also really generous donations already. Notch with the 10k, then other guys with 200 and 500 $ already.

That iongravire1 has pretty much the exact same voice and way of speaking as the dota player Fear, it's actually freaky.
Anyone knows where he comes from? And if he's from Oregon, do every one speak like that out there?

Too bad there's no Funkdoc or Cyghfer. Lots of cool games on that list though!
I'm most interested in NES titles, so Samurai Pizza Cats and 8 Eyes should be fun. I recently beat the latter, what a pain in the ass.

Nice feeling to see that the OP I wrote a year ago has been used for two new threads regarding this kind of event.
I've been a fan of speedrunning for over two years now and I am really looking forward to this edition of SGDQ.

My body is ready for a Mega Man X and X2 WR by Caleb on stream!!

Do participants get tax deductions for their travel costs to the event? You're not technically giving money to charity, but you're raising it for them.

Feels like the bad ending always win in all of the bid wars for these events. Bad endings and killing the animals.

Haven't seen a run of Machine for Pigs yet. If it's anything like the old Amnesia it'll be a whole lot of OoB.

I had no idea what Amnesia was before this run but after watching it for 25 minutes I now have even less of an idea of what it is about

Lol its supposed to be a horror game, where you take your sweet time being scared and thoroughly scanning the environment, in this case, going out of bounds every 2 mins, and flying using pig bodies is what the game is about. Rofl, this is so great.

The Amnesia games are pretty scary experiences. Watching them run like this takes all the fright out of it though. Weables has some great commentary to go with it :D

I'm enjoying this run more than original Amnesia run. The WR for that is something like 20 minuts and you spend like 90% of that time outside the map.

Metal Warriors looks really good to me. "Realistic" proportions of humans and robots (humans are small, robots are powerfull), the overall design and action...pretty good.

Yea they have been done to death, but for good reasons.
I still love to watch those runs even if I watch them all the time anyway on twitch (OoT, WW, MM, SM64 etc). For some reason im really not excited about the schedule this year. Very few games actually interest me there.

Even if these games are done to the death, they still need to have some high profile speed runners running them... they need to keep in mind this whole thing is for a charity and I don't think they'll come close to last year's donation goal at this rate

They have been done at SGDQ in the past a lot not to mention every god damn online marathon there ever is

I'm just glad some other games got the spot light even if they don't bring in the hype. This is as much as show casing the community and the games as it is bringing in money (although bringing in money should be the primary goal I admit)

But if you were to organize 'GDQs with the mindset of doing all the most popular games by the most popular runners then you could end up with every marathon being mostly the same games and people.

I wouldn't worry too much about this SGDQ raising more than last year's. Not even 24 hours in and they're already up to 65k USD on the donation tracker.

yeah, last SGDQ raised like 250k. We'll easily beat that this time. Probably won't reach the million but that's normal, SGDQ is smaller than AGDQ normally

Agreed, every SGDQ has been significantly smaller than every past AGDQ of the same year. I don't think the organizers even really hoped to reach the million mark, but they'll almost definitely beat SGDQ 2013's donation number. Still not even 24 hours in and 67k raised - although the last 12 hours have been much slower than the first 11.

Zyre is a cool guy, good run. And Earthworm Jim looks like an infuriating game.

And now a game that I've never seen before but it's BLUEGLASS!

Also gotta take the charity into account. Doctors Without Boarders is a worthy cause, but doesn't have the same emotional weight that cancer research does since that's something that has affected the lives of more viewers.

Why do people like Blueglass so much btw? I understand he is a bit goofy and very cheerful, but I still don't understand why he gets so much love. Especially when his runs of ecco are always so bad.

he's a very like-able dude. But I think it's mostly because his laugh is the kind of laugh that makes everyone else laugh as well. There doesn't even need to be something funny happening. When he laughs it's just so hilarious that you laugh as well

Also there's a lot of people in Twitch chat that are just being ironic and typing out "YSG" every chance they get. Seems like a good dude though.

After seeing two speed runs of Ecco I am happy I never bothered to finish the game. There are worse games but it seems bad enough.

I really enjoyed watching the Banjo-Tooie speedrun, but holy cow does the speedrunner interrupt the announcer/ donation-reciting every two minutes! Especially during Hailfire peaks, it was becoming obnoxious to listen to, when the speedrunner could just wait ten seconds to explain something.

EDIT: I just got to the part where one donor offered $20 for the BT group to stop interrupting rofl.

The chat was going NUTS during the actual run of that. It was significantly more entertaining than the run itself. And I say that as a person who generally regards twitch chat as being somewhere below the level of the writing on the walls in a public restroom, and slightly above youtube comments.

I much prefer sonic runs than any other 2D games.
And the best is to see Werster rage hard on his own stream watching the mistakes on the run (because he has the WR for this game).

So Duke plays this with mouse and keyboard right?

Cool to see how well Psychonauts went for Duke. Most of the time when I've caught his stream live it's been rough.

Next is Deus Ex: Human Revolution by Xexi and then Sly Cooper and the Thievus Raccoonus by LovableLambchop.

Currently the Sarif ending is winning the bidding war on Deus Ex by like 40 bucks. Total's gonna hit 100k in like 10 minutes or so.

I really wanted to see Psychonauts but I chose sleep instead :<

Also they generally do more obscure games for SGDQ, save the big guns for AGDQ. I enjoy it though, there are a lot of cool runs that aren't Zelda or SM64

Races are always the best part of GDQs.

Sorta upset I missed LoZ last night, but it started at like 11pm my time, which is just too much =x. Hopefully I'll catch the rest of the zelda games when they come on... but as long as I get cosmo's castlevania tonight, and the metroid fusion race when that happens (and I should, if they both happen relatively on time) I'll be happy with the marathon. I can watch whatever else as VODs.

He mentioned several times, that the frame-rate seemed to be slightly off. Considering the effect frame-skipping etc. seems to have on the actual game mechanics in SMB, this could be really bad. And it would explain all the unexpected behaviour of sticking to walls when you're not supposed to or the skyscraper-glitch just now, when the jump at the end got botched too many times in a row to be explained by human error. Maybe they use a screen-capturing method which messes with the fps of the game (unless they capture it externally and not via software). Whatever the reason, it's really unfortunate. I was looking forward to this run.

The screen capture is done via HDMI output to a Capture card on the streaming PC. I am unsure if that affects his fps on the game. Staff asked all the PC runners to test their games on the PCs in the marathon room long before their run. If he didn't test it properly then not much we can really do.

It could, if the capturing device identifies itself to the game-pc as an output-device capable of something other than 60 fps (because it essentually impersonates the monitor towards the graphics card). No point in speculating though, I'm sure someone will have a look at the setup after everything's done and try to figure it out.

I think it was a controller driver issue. Two drivers were interfering with one another.
PC setups at GDQs have always been really bad.

I can't wait for Boshy after this. Gonna be hype!

edit: Actually this SGDQ our PC setups have been great. We gained time on all of our PC games so far because setup has been faster. They built 3 PCs for the marathon whereas in past GDQ's they were using other peoples PCs. The 3 PCs are identical so runners weren't surprised between the practice machine and marathon machine.

Ah, the XInput wrapper for DS3. DS3 on PC is always a pain in the ass, with that other driver being borderline malware and apparently this one causing issues for actual DirectInput controllers.

I blame recent games requiring a controller and not offering a real controller support.

Make sure you watch at the very end for the flawless last-level run. Not part of the speed run, but an immaculate execution of the "intended" gameplay.

No it was between the two. It was two very short runs.

Spyro was definitely in between those two lol.

Edit: Both runs were quick. The Any% run was like 12 minutes or something.

Not much. The guy kept making bad jokes and finally the runner had had enough and told him that he'd prefer it if he'd be quiet, queue awkward mood for the rest of the run.

:D, Hi Alurr. It was good, I am going to try and be on the couch for Warcraft 3 too (Gotta ask Studio if he's ok with it). I'll wear my TL shirt for that to represent.

Was a good run outside of the Baron Kane issue without switching difficulties so we could level up more attack. Still very solid at sub 22.

It kills me that the vast majority of people who just watched Mischief Makers have no idea how unbelievably fast and hard that was. As in, every level.

But I do understand that's basically the mantra with all these games Only those who have gotten their asses kicked to still get bad times can fully appreciate these speedruns.

the handcam gave a good impression of how freaking fast he had to be to beat that and some of the jumps (and grabs) looked really precise

Edit: I wonder how Risk of Rain will look tomorrow. That's one of the few games in this marathon that I've played a lot of (and it's freaking harrrrrrrrrrrd). Other then that there's only WC3, Bioshock and Deus Ex and the Half Life and Portal games

This game is hilarious

the million-$ record of AGDQ probably not. But the SGDQ record is somewhere around 250k and it's 160k already and still more than 3 days to go. So yeah, I think that record will be broken

also this game is really fun to watch. I love that they emulated an old arcade game and got arcade controllers and everything for it

So far they are way behind AGDQ record-breaking pace. Enthusiasm seems lower and the game list is weird; among the big donation-bringers there's Super Metroid but no Yoshi's Island, they have the least popular 3d Zelda (SS), no 3d GTA.

Not to say I don't love it, since there are tons of games I'm hype for--La-Mulana, Mighty Switch Force, WC3, Risk of Rain, Rayman Legends, Bible Adventures, Quake 100% nightmare, Super Metroid low%--but a bunch of the regular hype games are missing. And that's ok, as long as people understand that it's about speedrunning first and raising money second.

I dont think currently we will make the 1 million that AGDQ did. Remember though that we did over 500k at AGDQ in the last 2 days so there is a lot of time for huge donations to come. During Chrono Trigger we were pushing 1k a minute in donations for the final area. I think even if we don't break 1 million but get close to it, it still is a huge win for the charity.

SGDQ has always raised significantly less than AGDQ, so it's basically expected.

Cancer Research is generally a subject that touches home a lot more than Doctors Without Borders, unfortunately.

Donation was met for All Weapons, which means he'll be forced to swap to whatever weapon drops for maximum chaos/entertainment. (Fastest route does use torch, or the last couple of record holders have strats for torch early into dagger drop on stage 3-5)

Notably hes playing the expension tho not the original campaign

I haven't seen an answer yet outside of some anonymous donation that was quoted "She said no." Can't verify the source but I presume with the amount of time that has passed with no answer he probably did get rejected.

The War3 campaign went really smoothly actually. Very few hiccups during the run and he made it 20+ minutes under estimate.

The hardest level, Balancing the Scales, went very well which he thought he was going to run into a lot of trouble.

Rest of the run went smoothly and everything was good =)

the War3 run going so smoothly made me miss Risk of Rain.
Yesterday RoR was supposed to be at around 7:30am my time, now it was at 6:09am

Yeah we are way ahead of schedule. We keep adding games and incentives to try and put us back to a correct time. Sorry, people are going too fast! =P

Duke Nukem 2. I remember playing the Shareware version repeatedly.

There's definitely runners for the Pokemon games, Megaman Zero(es) and Golden Sun. I think they just didn't have anyone running them for this marathon.

We have pokemon red vs pokemon gold incentive for late this week. Currently pokemon gold is in the lead by like $600.

Bonesaw's runs are always a lot of fun, this one is amazing as well

btw is there no Tri-Hex run this time around? Can't find anything in the schedule.

Bonesaw just got WR on Duke Nukem 2 on stream. He beat his own time, but he's pretty much the only person running it.

The guy keeping that updating is doing it as he can so occasionally he falls behind a few hours. Any game that isn't liked yet has an X next to the name. If it still is giving you problems then it's probably just Twitch VODs being not great. Everything is going to get uploaded to SDA's Youtube Channel afterwards, but it takes a while for them to get through it all. (The last of the AGDQ VODs was just uploaded at the end of March)

Most shortcuts and glitches aren't allowed in this (e.g., Wario Stadium); I am disappoint

He also hit countless banana peels (including hitting himself), accidentally squished himself into others during lightning, fell twice in a row in Yoshi Valley, and made a couple other errors that I was surprised would happen in a speed run. I assume most people wanted to watch MK64 for the nostalgia, but from a speed running perspective, this was definitely the biggest letdown for me this marathon. It was literally only powersliding. Really cool guy and I love the game, but the speed run was boring and simple. I was never in awe, especially compared to the other games with strategies that looked nearly impossible for the layman to perform.

The AGDQ run of MK64 was pretty awesome iirc, check that one out for some pretty cool glitches and whatnot.

I liked how they started the Goldeneye speedrun with the words: "he looks down to reduce lag and it gives you a smaller hitbox. Also, he will do it most of the time". Most of the time in the speedrun, he will look to the ground. >.>

Anyways, cant wait for peaches and Doom 64 (with him looking to the ground for most of the time )

Peaches is one of the best runners IMO, his ability to play at the highest level while going into great detail is hard to come by, particularly during a live event.

edit: and monitor says it: Zelda is next. So schedule should work for the next few games too.

Well it was the 1v1 BR battles that made it awesome, also i always played on MLG playlists, so the game speed was slightly faster, and dying took i think 1 less bullet, or burst, i forget. But its fast paced when your 1 or 2v1 trying to get perfect BR shots on someone. Its hard and rewarding!

Agreed.... sure SS isn't as flashy as a platformer like SM64 and not as totally busted as OoT, but it's still a pretty cool game to run.

meh. Would love to see a 100% run of Fallout 3. The game is great, kind of sucks to see none of it in a 25 minutes glitch run.

Rescue Rangers 2 was amazing to see, one of the few NES games I beat in my childhood. Inspired me to donate for the first time as well.

Overslept and missed the Dishonored run but just watched the VOD. Oh man that marathon luck in the DLC, both runners getting the same softlock twice.

Also sinister1's 1p2c Rescue Rangers run was cool, but I wish that had done a controller cam for it.

Wild Super Mario 64 run by Siglemic appeared! Awesome

How do we upgrade from 16 stars to 70 or 120? I don't see that option anywhere in the donation list.

It's a full donation total thing: if they get to $350K (i think) you get 70 stars, $500K, the full 120.

Yeah it looks normal to me. There seems to be a lot of american stuff. Flags , monuments, and apparently what seems to be the president. Other than that, it looks like a Japanese robot game.

Hey TeamLiquid,
Id like to note really quick that the links on the stream page (http://www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/SDA%20Marathons) are incorrect.
These links are incorrect:
Donations: http://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/donate/10 (instead of http://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/donate/9)
Tracker: http://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/10 (instead of http://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/9)
French Re-Stream: http://www.jeuxvideo.com/gaming-live/sgdq.htm (instead of http://agdq2014.mistermv.com/)
German Re-Stream does not exist for this SGDQ.
T-Shirts: http://theyetee.com/gamesdonequick/ (instead of http://theyetee.com/sda)

Aside from that, thank you very much for featuring our marathon on TeamLiquid!

i am really enjoying this halo speed run .. seems like the previous fastest speed run was toned down like twice in the difficulty right ?

legendary difficulty is like holy shit difficult ..

this speed run is making me realize how terrible i am in the game lol .. did not know you can catch the enemy with plasma grenade after plasma gun charge

EDIT: nevermind it's a double tap reload that i didn't know it exist

Also is it just me or does this event have far less in-person attendees than usual? I've never seen more than a dozen people in the room at a time, even though the have twice as many chairs as previous events.

There is a larger viewing area in the back with a projector and whatnot. It's not on camera. Apparently attendance has never been higher.

I thought that may be the case but it just doesn't feel the same when watching the stream. Some of the best moments of previous events are when you see 20-30 people watching all get up and do the same thing at once, chant together, or just being able to see everyone react to things. All of that is gone when you can only see 5-6 people at a time.

Prime 2 was way ahead - Notch sniped Prime 1 with 2.000 - and got sniped by someone wo spend 300 for Prime 2 - at the end, the difference is 34something (or something else close)

Metroid (not prime) HYPE! :D

"1%" i guess means getting the bare minimum of weaponry in the game, unlike "any%" which is do whatever to finish faster.

1% Fusion is pretty ridiculous. Most of the joke bosses become genuine threats. And the genuine threats (like Nightmare) become horrendous.

Technially "low%" would be that kind of run. For some games, the theorectical low% run isn't really feasible because it is too hard, too boring or has a trick that's almost impossible to do, so they name the "almost lowest%" run something else. Not sure if that's the case for Metroid Fusion.

1% in Fusion means avoiding every missile/e-tank upgrade except one, which requires a frame-perfect trick to avoid (aka, not actually viable in a non-TAS).

Anyone saw the wc3 run (live or on VOD)?

He might know speedrunning, but the level of actual micro is nonexistent. I wonder how much faster it is to complete with micro ?

It was still a good run. Could some areas been improved with better micro? Sure, but you could have said that about any RTS that has ever been run. Overall the run was very good for what needed to be completed. With really good micro I am sure you could get closer to a 1 hour time. He also was taking some levels extra safe for the marathon so he wouldn't have to reset (such as the very last level with making extra turtles).

The very long mission could definitely have been improved but better micro isn't going to do much for the strats shown in the final 2 missions. Studio is great with his commentary as well so I would recommend checking it out.

Fusion 1% is ridiculously hard, and I'm really happy I got to see a run. I'll be checking those guys out more often. The idea of it being single segmented is crazy enough before factoring speedrunning.

The one missile tank that can be picked up can be skipped by shine sparking through an X barrier, but it's such an insane trick to pull off you'll never see it outside of TASes.

EDIT:
Trick is here.

Just watched the SM64 run. Not disappointed I've seen Sig's speedruns at least a dozen times, and I'm always impressed at how the run still changes and more glitches are still being found. That game crash was unexpected too haha.

I remember for AGDQ14 there was a statistics site which drew graphs depicting the amount of viewers and the amount of donations over time. Was nice to see which games garnered the most attention. Is there anything similar for this years SGDQ?

Not surprised that the biggest jump in donations was during the Mario/ SM64 games haha.

I wonder if the Save/Kill animals for Super Metroid is going to make more than it did at AGDQ. It's already at ~52k and it finished at ~67k at AGDQ. It's also so crazy how much that incentive makes at each 'GDQ.

We need to get PETA to donate a ton of money to save the animals.

so you need to have the coin purse and also that one special pokemon in slot 4 with the move Return as first move to execute a code you have written down as the names of your boxes?
Pokemon logic makes absolutely no sense to me at all...

A very silly question: do you think it could be possible that Japanese developers intentionally tend to localize their games so that they run a bit slower, so that speedrunners all showcase the original Japanese versions? xD Okay, that probably doesn't even make sense.

The biggest difference is typically the amount of text to scroll through. So, to answer your question, yes. The inventors the Japanese character system did have speedrunning in mind.

Didn't word it well, but that's what I meant - the text scrolling.

edit: Ah... right. Japanese uses lower number of characters for the same text, because they are syllables and even whole words. Didn't think of that at all, thanks!

The OoT race is only scheduled for 30 mins? What category is it? Might not even be worth sitting up till 4am for T.T Was hoping for MST or something.

I assume the fastest glitch run category they have in OoT? I'm staying up for Cosmo ^^

For me it's the other way around, as OoT is at midnight eastern time, and FFVI is at 2 AM haha.

Good thing they have VODs

Yeah, Cosmo isn't running any OoT category except Any% until he breaks 18:20. Mostly because that's the only category for which the iQue is better than VC/N64. Since the iQue's controller is different he doesn't want to confuse iQue tricks with VC tricks, hence only the one category.

Well, it's not just character length always! e.g. Italian or Spanish is the fastest language version for Wind Waker.

Wind Waker HD, Japanse is still faster for Wind Waker. And that's a bit of a unique example, for some reason the text moves more slowly in Japanese than it does in other languages. But in a lot of games the game is patched between versions, since they are not released at the same time, so one of them may have a glitch that makes the run faster on one version or the other. IIRC Twilight Princess is played in english because of a unique skip for example.

Chinese is technically even faster, but not really an option most of the time.

Yeah that was a super glitched run. Not my favorites but I guess to each his own.

I assume inbounds is a more normal race :p

I remember a out of bounds run a year or so ago was a fair bit longer than that. I guess they found a lot of new ways of getting out of bounds since then. And yeah, an in bounds run actually looks like a normal game.

Off the top of my head...
  • Metal Wolf Chaos because AMERICA
  • THPS3 WR run
  • Super Mario World race
  • Metroid Prime 2
  • Siglemic 120 Star Super Mario 64
  • Halo 1 Legendary

All those were pretty awesome.

It's two different categories, and we may have a third one after that (3 minutes at most for the true any%).

Edit: probably not the third category, second one is taking too long I guess.

There's only a few people who can do that buffered and even fewer that can do unbuffered. I'm gonna brag a little bit and say I was the second to do unbuffered on stream :D Never in a run though cause i could barely do it and the rest of the run is too hard anyway ^^

I agree with these. Also, Mischief Makers if you've ever played the game before. That was the speed run I was most impressed by, but I've also played the game enough to know how absolutely brilliant and technical the run was.

Well as Cosmo points our skater did a lot to improve the OoT Any% optimisation and is legitimately one of the best runner of the category. I'm sure Cosmo is aware that because of his stature in the community that there is an inclination for the community to think shit things about skater. The race could have easily gone either way (cosmo had to go for the 8% void clip) and skater is a good runner! I'm sure cosmo did what he could to make sure the community appreciates that skater is legit and the race wasn't a good illustration of either of their abilities.

Watching all this Speedrunning really gave me a taste for it, time to load up some half life 2 and get to work. Rofl. Seriously tho, between HL1 and 2, which one would be easier for a beginner? Also The Swapper seems like it would be fun too lol.

Also, sad to see the SDA Marathons come to a close, really is my favorite week of the year, so much content, such a good cause, and many good times.

Demon chocobo is just the background. There's a chocobo background in the config that you can get to look like this by changing the colors around.

I started learning HL2 a week or so ago, and it's honestly not that hard to get in to. Between built-in console commands to look at where clip brushes/triggers are, built in quicksaves/quickloads, and gocnak's ghosting mod features (displays speed, built in timer, ghosts) it's really easy to practice the tons of crazy tricks "required" to get a good time.

That said, my first run was 4 hours long (Orb launch took FOREVER to understand T___T) and I've had crashes at almost everywhere in the run, so it can try your patience. But my goal is just to get a sub 2 hour time, and I'm having fun getting there. Do recommend.

Most speedrunners' advice on choosing games to run is something like this: "Do you like the game a whole lot casually? If you do, run it. If you didn't find it fun before, you won't find it fun to speedrun."

I personally prefer watching Half-life 1 speedruns over HL2. Portal runs are even cooler when done well. I don't do it well, but it's still an amazingly fun game to run. I think my first run was almost an hour long which is just stupidly slow. Took me a while getting used to the backwards jumping.

Anyone know when the bonus stream starts? I thought it was in an hour?

Also, gocnak has a 3 hour tutorial on twitch which ive been watching, alot to take in thats for sure. The thing is most people run HL2 with Source Engine (build 5135), whereas most of us are using the latest "Steampipe" version, which apparently has some issues for speedrunning, but is still doable. I actually made a small post on Reddit asking about the differences, here My post. Seems like it may be worth getting that Source Unpack version going, which as far as i know we can only get my messagin Yalter in Steam for a link, which to me is odd. But imma scour google for maybe another link somewhere. Anyways, GL!

Really annoying how the game audio is so much louder than the runner right now :<

Lemme know if you get your hands on the source unpack. I haven't noticed any tricks not working, but I'm kinda hoping the stability issues are beacuse of steampipe.

And yeah, that tutorial is sick. The only real new tech is this crouch clipping + save and quit, as far as I've noticed, so the fact that the tut is almost a year old doesn't matter that much. Half the fun for me is finding my own setups for ABH launches etc anyways, so the fact that a lot of those have changed doesn't really mean much to me :D

Trihex didn't even plan on going until like 2 months ago, and even then only because everyone else was going. Any% Yoshi's Island was offered by Crispy, which ended up getting rejected due to the fact that they wanted more variety and Yoshi's Island is more or less a lock in for AGDQ each year, plus the fact that Yoshi's Island has been in every *GDQ since the very first one.

Maybe its just me, but fucking ABHing seems so inconsistent for me, its like 30% of the time i can get it, the rest im just hopping like an idiot with not extra speed, guess more practice i suppose.

The GDQs game selection has been questionable for the past 2-3 events now. Very few PC games and they claim to not want to have the sames games twice in a row but they keep having the same Mega Man and Metroid segments.
AGDQ 2014's lineup was actually very weak (that's of course a personal opinion, though it's shared by many more speedrun friends) and SGDQ was only slightly better. I hope 2015 will go back to the same hype levels I had when watching the previous years.

i was really excited to see carcinogen and mexiricanbassmonkey race trauma center: second opinion on the preliminary schedule but it seems they didn't bother to practice it at all to do it at sgdq. really disappointed on that point.

For PC games at least, they've always said they're hesitant to add them because of additional setup time that is usually required and the numerous other problems PC games can have. A pretty good example of this was the Super Meat Boy run. Something was running on the PC that was causing the physics of the game to behave differently and they didn't figure out what it was until halfway through the run (and up until they fixed it,the runner was having a lot of trouble with it). Also in Witwix's I Wanna Be The Boshy run he mentioned that the computer he was using was the only one he found at the event that could run the game properly (I assume he meant a high enough framerate). Considering that plus the risk of random crashes it's somewhat understandable that they don't add a whole lot of PC games to the schedule.

Nah thats an incorrect statement by witwix, Boshy worked on all computers but one practice computer didn't have internet. Boshy forces you to update the game and therefore he could only find a way to play on the third difficulty rather than two on the practice PC's.

Super meat boy is unfortunate and I could see runners straying away from it for awhile. AGDQ meat boy race had massive tech issues there as well.

To be fair, megaman and metroid are some of the corner stones in gaming, period. Its the same if you complained about zelda or mario games. Its why doom/quake are on the list every time, you have to give respect where its due.

I think PC games are ran less in general, check speedrunslive out and see how many PC games are being played compared to console games. Right now its at least 90% console games, or PC games that are trying to bring back the feelings of old console games.

It's not that they are not running PC games, it's that they only run old games except those in a franchise and occasional outlier. There is practically no ps3 / 360 game. Problem is that their target audience are people with disposable income, which means steady job, late 20s minimum, and are suckers for nostalgia. All the kids flooding kappa in the chat might enjoy newer games, but how many of them can donate more than their 20 bucks of beer money.

I would say that PC games are also simply worse games to speedrun. Old popular games for the PC were shooters, which is the one genre people run all the time and it's always featured, strategy games, which suck, and stuff like Baldur's Gate or Diablo that take too long. Those plataformers or early 3D games that people love to run are just so much more common for consoles, and the few examples for PC like Commander Keen/Jazz Jackrabit/etc. also get some exposure. I can't think of a single PC game that isn't a FPS that I used to play when I was young and that I feel would make a good speedrun.

Add that to the technical issue with running early windows or even DOS games, or patching and PC specs for recent games, and it makes sense that there aren't that many people that run PC games.

I can't decide if I think Naegleria is the best thing or the worst thing about GDQs/GDQ Bonus Stream specifically. Solidly on the fence.

I haven't watched this bonus stream, but I had a pretty similar feeling after AGDQ. Have there been any Mario Party money matches yet? Those are the best.

Currently it is down. They had a lot more to take down this year and are leaving earlier than last year. They might bring something back up later but it will not be high quality compared to earlier. No garuantee though.

At the end of the bonus stream, they said that technic people already pack in the technics. And then it went down.

I was just surprised that a Souls game didn't make it in. I thought Dark Souls 2 would've gotten in for sure.

Anyways, if you're curious, here's where I believe everyone raided Demon9's Twitch channel.

Dark Souls 2 wasn't even released when games were submitted to SGDQ (that was back in February IIRC), so of course it wasn't going to be in. Dark Souls 1 was in both AGDQ and SGDQ in 2013.

Twitch needs to enable VODs on Android. Why are they ditching such a big market?
