My aunt is willing to sell me her car 1992 acura integra for around $1500 which is a good price in my opinion (I know nothing about cars). She was going to sell it to one of her coworkers for $2000, but is going to wait on me for a decision. The car looks and drives alright it has some rusts here and there. I don't mind the $1500 price tag, what I'm worried about is all the drama that comes after buying a car and all the fees I pay etc. I'll have to start to learn myself how the car works etc.
this is the model
So what was your first car or current car? What should I expect as a first time car owner? Any tips advice?
edit: If I remember the car has around 200KM Mileage, I'll confirm tonight.

first time cars are just supposed to get u used to driving and just gets u point A to point B

You should expect a LOT OF THINGS to go wrong with a used car > 5-6 years old.

On August 23 2006 09:10 miNi wrote: You should expect a LOT OF THINGS to go wrong with a used car > 5-6 years old.
depends on the car. you must have bought really shitty cars if you think it's normal for a car to have troubles after 5-6 years. or maybe you wrecked them. ^^
|
first time car.
peice of shit that moves on gas.
thats all your gonna really need. try to get driving experience under your belt before you buy anything over 1000 dollars. in my opinon. first car should be less than 1k.
a lot of people wreck their first car and the last thing you want to do is wreck a car you payed 1500 for when you could have wrecked a car that was only 500.
i would reconsider.

98 Toyota Camry. That's my current car until the big bucks start rollin' in.
ahk-gosu when you say wreck, do you mean you drive in into the ground or actually crash it?

I bought my first car 9 months ago. It's a 1995 Ford escort. When I bought it, the mechanical inspection papers stated that it was in great running condition. Now the exhaust pipe has rusted off, and the starter is giving out. I guess you should check it out before you buy it for $1500. Do you have to pay for the mechanical inspection? Will she? Who plans on covering the insurance? I pay my own, and its a hefty fee (im 21). They decided to split it up into 2 6 month payments, each around $1000. I just paid it last week, and it was a massive kick in the wallet lol.

How?
Saved up your entire life or what? Or did your parents buy it for you.
My car is an 07 Ford Escape that my dad is leasing for me and my sister (he works for ford) Two months till my license.
|
just check the oil regularly (twice a month) and keep the fluids level, unless it was a piece of shit to begin with, you'll be good. Acura's (and well any jap car basically) last a long time, a 92 is still good.
|
That looks like a great first car, Integras run forever if they are treated right, get good milage, arent girly looking, and have ok power. My first car was a 1990 Jeep Cherokee. Man I have some memories in that thing... the rear seets folded flat so you toss some comforters and pillows back that and it was like a mobile hotel room. Except of courpse for that fact that people (or cops) could walk by and look in, but thats a story for another time
|
that looks like an amazing choice. assuming you have/had a job, you should have enough money to spend more than 500 like ahk is suggesting. i'd kill to get that kind of a deal on that kind of car. im still looking for a car myself.
and like someone else said, you shouldnt be forseeing too many problems with any jap car.
|
i got a 97 grand am v6 for 1400 ..... new engine the only thing i had to change wa the brakes like after 6 months very ncie little car nothing wrong..... it pays to know the car dealer guy haha he was moving it and blew the engine up so he fully replaced it and said eff it 1400 for a car that runs so freaking awesome.
|
It's a good deal. Take it to a mechanic and have them look at it before any purchase.

I'm 20 years old and I'll be payng the insurance lol... She already did the mechanical inspection and she changed the gaz tank cuz it was leaking or something. I'll need to replace the wipers though.

lmao a 1992 for 1500 ? and you say ur aunt is "willing" ROFL dude so would any other person. If its your aunt she should sell it under $1000 and $1000 at MOST. Especially if the Mileage is over 100 k which it most likely is. If she were to take that car to the dealer theyd give her no more than $500-600 for it. 1500 is too much, especially if its ur "willing" aunt.
edit : just reread omg 200,000km how much is that in Miles? id definitely not buy it for 1500. My friend got a 92 Honda prelude for $900 and in pretty good condition. Still the amount of problems in thoe cars are too much for it to be worth a g5.
edit#2: go to autotrader.com and look for used cars in ur area. You'll notice you can get a much better car than that for around the same price. And you can look for private sellers since i see your willing to pay upfront not financing. www.autotrader.com ftw
|
My parents gave me this car (in a different color, this is not a picture of mine) once they were through with it. Piece of shit.. Manuals suck ass.
|
first a 69 vw beetle. no ac/heat. power nothing. broken gas meter. but great mileage!
then a 94 galant. tryna sell that now

look up your car at kelley blue book, www.kbb.com, www.edmunds.com and www.autotrader.com to get an approximate value on your cars worth. dont depend on just 1 site. get a mechanic to check it out to make sure it doesnt have any significant problems. also check ur fluids regularly at first since ur car is old but if your fluids are fine after checking for a while, u dont need to check as often.
hondas/acuras are pretty damn reliable though so if the mechanic clears it, u should be in the clear for a while. my buddy drives a 92 accord and it has over 180k miles on it, still gets from pt A to pt B. btw 200,000km = 124,274 miles
i drive a 95 land rover range rover... damn british cars are so funky (not very many mechanics are knowledgable about land rovers here in california not surprisingly), the mileage blows (13 mpg), engine oil leaks, etc. but it was free compliments of my grandparents so i cant complain.

really depends on how shitty you are a driving. most of my friends got really cheap cars when they got the licenes, and for goodf reasons. all the cars ended up being donated coz noone wanted to buy those beat up piece of shit afterwards. i didnt have a car in high school but drove my dad's, most of the time wtih him around, so i got used to driving carefuly and had no accidents before getting the hang of it. im still driving my '98 altima and i love it

wtf twice a month oil changes?
|
damn photo bucket well 2001 protoge 6,900$

read carefully you stupid fucks, i didnt say change the oil twice a month, i said check it twice a month, to make sure the mother fucker isnt leaking, and most kids who get their first car totally neglect anything under the hood and this is the first thing which will usually destroy their car, unlike running low on windshield wiper fluid.
KBB, practically the authority on used cars, values this car at around $2000 from a private party, which is exactly what i would value it around give or take a few hundred dollars depending upon area of the country and perks (leather, cd player, etc), and assuming it is in "good" condition meaning while not shimmering sparkling fantastic, it is a decent reliable car. Your assesment of the value of the car being under $1000 is idiotic and baseless. Yes a dealer wont give you shit for a car, but since when have they ever? Unless it's brand new you never sell to a dealer unless youre just desperate.
CollegeBoard, eat a dick, your understanding of anything in that virtual memory argument was based entirely off a wikipedia article, which is not about to dive into the intricacies of any particular subject. You were called out on about 5-6 different flaws in comments you made, and ignored them all and continued to attack my understanding of virtual memory with oversimplified lamens definitions. The only error I brought into that conversation was making virtual memory directly addressable by developers, which i was probably wrong about, or at least to some degree, since as evidenced by simple observation of system behavior VM is not strictly used as an extension of physical memory when none is available. The rest of your comments in that thread clearly showed your understand of all things general to be below standard, and nothing but rehash of what other sites have pasted.

You say that it's not worth $1500 CAD? KBB values it at ~1700 USD in good condition, and on top of that I accidently put in 200 000 miles instead of kilometes.
Auto trader has the following: '92 Integra GS, 100000 miles: 4200 USD '91 Integra LS, 140000 miles: 2200 USD '91 Integra RS, 150000 miles: 2000 USD

This is my one and only shitbox. I drove it off a 8 foot cliff when I was trying to be like Pierce Brosnan and kissing my g/f driving around in the country. The windshield is broken, the gas tank does not open unless you get out and pull on it very hard, the breaks squeel, it has no insurance, I had to take a crowbar and wedge open the window 2 days ago cause I locked my keys in the car, so there is a big gap between the frame and the window, I lit my ash tray on fire at a stoplight because I put a still lit cigarette in a pile of butts ( I had to put out the fire with the remaining liquid from a 1 liter mountain code red mountain dew bottle )

My first car was a hand me down from my parents. 1990 Chevy Sprint, 3 cylinders, and I drove it until it reached 380.000 kms. I so wanted to get it to 400k. Anyways, I had mor duct tape than paint on it, no muffler, and brakes so mushy I could barely stop while going down hills. I once tried to pass someone going up a hill but maxed out at 80km/hour, only passed half of him, and then had to drift back behind him... o the humility.

Hyundai's can be good first cars. I helped my little bro pick out his first car 2-3 years ago and he ended up getting a hyundai. It was a 4 year old car with just under 50k miles and some minor cosmetic dmges for $1200. Hes been driving from Santa Cruz to Sacramento twice a month and only work hes done it is oil changes/flat repairs. Of course the thing has no power, and the plastic door handles are already braking, but its as reliable as fuck and still under warranty.

$1500 seems like a lot to me for a '92, but then again I'm not exactly an expert.
I have a 2000 Saturn SL1 sedan. I got it with only about 30k miles on it. So far I've had to replace the battery and the brakes. Too bad it dipped into the money I had saved for insurance. I guess I gotta actually save again! :X

Got a 02 Ford Explorer back in Jan of 2005 when I was 17 for $12k. Gas mileage was so bad on it. So I decided to sell it and bought a 06 Accord for $20k three months ago. I paid for it myself and insurance as well. o_O Dunkin Donuts FTW
How much do you guys pay for insurance? I started off at 2k a year, a bit north of Boston, Mass. Thats actually considered normal for a teenager around here.
I miss my Explorer compared to my Accord. The other night, I was at a red light next to this girl and as soon as it hit green, we both gunned it. The two lanes merged into one and me and my 4 cylinder got our ass handed. About 30 minutes later I pulled up to a Dunkin Donuts and there she was. =[ Such a disgrace. The acceleration on it is so fucking bad.

THE Fuck LOL You got a 06 accord working at Dunkin Donuts! lol

He must be the manager or something -_-;; Anyways, im still driving my first and only car, an awesome 1994 Citröen AX 1.1 which has been really well treated and its still working great. The only problem is that it has a very weak engine, and i get raped at the highway everytime. 140 km/h tops the engine.
Now ive been saving, and i got my eyes into a 2001 Audi A3 2.0, 85.000 km for 5.500€. The other option is a 1997 Audi A4, 115.000km for 2.000€. My savings are up to 4.000€, and i might get a 1500 loan from my parents (and i will be eating bread with ketchup for the next 10 months) but if i feel too much pressure in my budget i might just go for the 2000€ Audi A4

Mine was what you would call a Sentra in the united states (it was called tsuru here) it was a fun and kinda fast car, it was almost in mint condition it had no problems at all and since it was a garbage car we (my sister and i) drove it like maniacs lol.

lol a lot of problems after it's older than 5-6 years? My dad has a 21-year old Ford Sierra, he hasn't done anything on it for at least the last five years, it still runs fine. It sure is rusty, but he can't complain about a car he bought for 600 when it was 12 years old.
i've never had a car myself tho.

For my 16th b-day i got 3 cars. (im the bald kid in the picture :-p ) they are pretty crappy to the ones i have now tho.

my first car is a 1996 toyota corolla like this one except red, has a 5 speed stick shift, cooler wheels, and an aftermarket soundsystem. got it all for $2500 in may, and have put 3k miles on it since then (i drive a LOT.) it has about 155k miles on it, will probably run past 200k. great car for high school. before this i drove my parents volvo or camry.
p.s. i don't think i will ever go back to automatic transmissions.
oh and i bought it with my savings, i pay gas, insurance, oil/fluids, and any minor repairs. my parents will only pay money on it if there is a major repair that i can't afford. i haven't had to fix anything at all.

ROFL @ title "shitbox" It reminds me of a hilarious story someone posted on Gamefaqs involving a "shitbox", but with the literal meaning of the word.
Don't remember who wrote this but I take no credit for it. It was written by someone who frequented the message board known as LUE.
First I will post parts one and two for all the people who have yet to read them. Then I will post part III. Oh, and get ready for an unbearably huge wall of text. Part three is especially lengthy so try to bear with me. Also, don't expect a summary.
PART I
It all started at the beginning of this year, when during gym class a loud-mouthed fat girl named stephanie approached me and started talking to me. Her constant droning about her boring life didn't really bother me at first, until it started happening every day. Soon, she started treating me like a god, constantly complimenting me and letting me copy her physics homework.Hell, one time i said I needed a pencil in study hall and she went all the way from the first floor to the fifth floor just to get me one. It was painfully obvious that she wanted my bone.
Now, I dont have anything against fat girls, but stephanie is a different kind of fat girl. She never stops talking, and every word that comes out of her mouth is incredibly stupid. Shes loud, and boisterous, and thinks shes the funniest person in the world. She has no friends.
Soon, she starts telling everyone in the school that she "likes me" (i feel like a fourth grader saying that) People tell me that she goes up to random people in the cafeteria, whom she doesnt even know, and tells them that she is in love with me. Soon, random people start ridiculing me about how that fat tub of gravy desperately wants my wang. Soon my friends get hold of this and start giving me hell about it too. One of my friends, who likes to annoy the hell out of everyone decided it would be funny to tell her that i liked her. later that day she called asking me if Iliked her, to which i promptly responded, "NO!." Then her friend called and managed to call me a ******* ***** before i hung up on her. Now by this time Ive had enough of this.
so one night me and a couple of my friends were at my friend phil's house. Phil is one of the most disgusting people i have ever met, and spends his free time searching for the most gruesome, offensive images and videos the internet has to offer. So on this night, phil comes out of the bathroom with a bag of his own feces. He soon comes up with the bright idea of putting his poop inside of a box, wrapping it up,signing it as "from your secret admirer, dont open until christmas" and putting it in stephanie's mail box. So phil gift-wraps the box of poo and smothers it in cologne and lysol to disguise the smell while me and the rest of the gang find her address. it was about 11:30pm, and in no more than 15 minutes we drive to her house to deliver the poo. Upon arrival, it is decided that since she is my problem I should go to her door and deposit the poo in her mail box, which is right beside the door. Nothing could possibly go wrong. So just as i arrive at her door, mystery present in hand, the door bursts open and i see her big fat face with a gaping smile.
"Joe!" (my name) she gleefully exclaimed, "You got me a present!"
I was caught red handed, my initial reaction was to turn back and take the gift with me, as to not hurt her feelings, but there was no turning back now.
"Here you go" i said with a heartfelt smile, extending the present into her hands."dont open until christmas" Ill never forget the look of pure joy on her face, seeing that the present was from her "secret admirer".
She was speechless, she tried to hug me but i stepped back narrowly avoiding human contact with that flabby-assed heifer. I told her that i had to go and quickly shuffled into phil's car where he would drive us to safety.
Despite the fact that she now thinks im her secret admirer, I smile to think that the box of crap is still festering under her Christmas tree to this very day.
have a merry Christmas stephanie!

peice of shit that moves on gas.
thats all your gonna really need. try to get driving experience under your belt before you buy anything over 1000 dollars. in my opinon. first car should be less than 1k.
a lot of people wreck their first car and the last thing you want to do is wreck a car you payed 1500 for when you could have wrecked a car that was only 500.
i would reconsider.
You obviously don't know what the pricing on cars is today. Just about anything that runs is gonna cost you about a grand nowadays, unless it's a real piece of shit that needs loads of work, in which case you're gonna spend more money anyhow. Buying a gigantic piece of shit just because it's cheap is dumb.
@OP: My first car was a '91 Mitsubishi Mirage, which I got for free, plus the costs of repairs, which turned out to be about a grand (that was with tires though). It got terrible gas milage, and completely sucked, but it got me to work and back for over a year before I got rid of it when my brother bought a new car that I now drive ('94 Saturn SC2 which I totally want to get rid of but can't afford to). I was in one minor fender bender with it, and I hit some shit in a parking lot once, too, because I squeezed through looking for a spot to park as I was almost late for a doctor's appointment.
To the bolded part of the quote: I honestly don't know a single person that wrecked their first car... it's very easy to avoid wrecking a car, and just because a car is your fourth or fifth doesn't take away that it's still just as likely for you to wreck it.

My first car, which I still drive right now is a '94 Mitsubishi Mirage, got it for 1.5k USD @ 65k miles. Thought it was a pretty good deal, and I get good mpg on it ;o

This is the first car my bro and I drove. An old '86 Audi... broke down so much that we spent 3x it's price fixing it year to year because my dad wouldn't let it go. It's this same car except a maroon color.

I frist had a Peugeot 309 for a few month and then my grandma gave me her 14 years old Peugeot 205 which is an absolute shitbox ^_^ The horse power is pathetic and it gobbles quite a lot of gasoline for a small car ( and god knows that the price of gas in France tears you apart, each time i go to fill my car it rips me a new asshole )
The good thing is since there's nothing electronic or even slightly modern in this car it is incredibly resistant. I drive like a lunatic and I never ever had trouble with it.
But I'm getting sick of driving a scooter with 4 wheels. My next car will be a mercedes I swear ! :p
