http://www.vingle.net/posts/161306-The-Highest-Paid-Pro-Gamers-In-The-World
It's a compilation made by Business Insider. The article should have been named "The Pro-Gamers with Highest Tournament Earnings" because I think they excluded sponsorship and salary.
Good to see so many Dota 2 and SC2 gamers on the list but I'm really surprised not a single LoL players are on the list.
|
That's because I believe that SC2 has highest tournament prizes for single players, LoL and Dota2 folks have to divide the prize into 5.
|
So, how many years is this taking into account here?

also the internationals really blow league out of thw water. 1M is a lot of money
|
Still, 4 out of the top 15 earners on this list are DOTA players, but still no LoL players. Are the tournament earnings significantly different between dota and LoL?_?
|
LoL pro's make majority of their money through stream revenue; and team income. Aside from TPA dudes who won the massive tourney last year; most LoL pro's don't make that much through tourney revenue.

Mvp and Flash's wins are interesting to see considering amount of time each has played in their respective games. Seeing Bisu beaten by Nestea must be painful for Bisu fans XD

Id love to see a list with salaries, sponsorship, streaming income and non-monetary compensation (like team houses, travel and insurance) included. Although at that point I am sure 6 or 7 of the top ten will be LoL players.

It doesn't include salary? Doesn't Flash get paid a ton?

This doesn't say a lot since the BW players got most of their money from their salary anyway.

Pretty sure Flash would be #1, unless someone like Nada has made more over time from salary.
|
Something else to note here is that Riot pays every member of an active team in the LCS ( League Championship Series ) 12.5k each SPLIT, and iirc there are 3 splits per year. Teams also receive an extra 25,000 to deal with expenses. The winner of each "split" wins 50,000 (dollars).
|
That's only tournament winnings . Flash , Jaedong , Bisu and Moon maid a crap ton of money through salary . Flash by now has made way over 1 million $ , probably between 1.250 -1.50 millions or something it could be higher .
|
Weird to look at "winnings" and call it money with which that they are "paid" in the first place.

Nowadays, yes. Shooter tournaments in the early 00's had even bigger prizes, which ultimately contributed to their downfall...

Not only them though, Fatal1ty has made a significant amount from advertisements and selling products with his brand.
|
Can you elaborate on that? Why did bigger prize led to their downfall?
|

Because the games weren't very established at that time. People saw massive interest in Quake and Counter-Strike and decided to put large amounts of money into games that didn't have a comparable community in terms of size and dedication (despite being good games). So instead of growing the scene by giving amateurs a bigger incentive to practice and also financial support so they can keep playing, all they did was attract Fatal1ty, and to a lesser extent Vo0, experienced and skilled progamers who could afford to practice a lot more than amateurs. Fatal1ty, who had since fallen off quite hard from being the best Quake player (his reign was much more short-lived than media/articles make it out to be) saw that there wasn't much money he could earn from it and switched to those games instead.
Kinda how people looked at MLG Columbus and Anaheim back in 2011 and believed we would come to a point where mid-tier Koreans will win every foreign event. That possibility would have been quite similar to this.
|
lol funny to see Vo0 made it on the list with Painkiller.
Painkiller had like the most bizarre scene ever. It had like a playerbase of 100-200 active duel players but some of the best FPS players played it because there was so much money that got pumped into it. Imagine a new RTS comes out and it has such a tiny playerbase but guys like Flash, JD and Stork playing it so you would regularly get matched against them. God I got raped so hard but improved incredibly fast at playing FPS due to it :D

Pretty much yeah.
Also Painkiller was a fantastic game. Damn shame that period was so stacked between Q3/UT2k3/2k4/Painkiller, they all deserved to be really big imo. :<

I don't know many other big LoL tournaments outside of the LCS, but when your running your own ship like TSM and CLG then I hear the money can be pretty good. These results shouldn't really surprise anyone because when it comes to DotA2 and SC2 there are plenty of tournaments to go around & a few KeSPA guys really do get paid. In terms of sponsorship dollars there is no shortage when it comes to certain teams, but if we're looking more at tournaments then yeah. Bingo.

Did Grubby not make that much money when he was godly at WC3?
|
Stephanooooooooooooooooooooooo is number 14. NICE^^

On July 17 2013 16:35 Maasked wrote: Did Grubby not make that much money when he was godly at WC3? I believe he won more tournaments, but Moon won the ones that paid out more. Moon was also in the top echelon of the scene almost from the beginning.
He was also never as godly as Moon or Sky. He was amazing and more consistent but never displayed the same absolute domination as the other two in the peaks of their careers.

Dota2's International 3 prizepool being as big as it is, and still growing, whoever wins that is gonna get in this list for free, if they're not already in there, in which case they're gonna snatch top3. :p
|
Yeah I noticed that too.
Its quite funny as well that Fatality made a huge chunk of his money playing Painkiller. A game I didn't even know had a competitive scene - I figure it was big as the prize money was monstrous, but still.... wtf?
|
for me its wrong name, because the PAYMENT is ahead of that, so the monthly check + streaming etc but this is only tournament money so ... for me its not "highest payed" guys
|
interesting list, although its kinda meaningless without involving salaries and stream revenue.
but i wonder where all that lol prize money went. this lol season has 5 million prize money and only 1 million out of those 5 are spent on the season finals as far as i know
|
Reiterating these lists does very little nowadays. Somebody took a calculator and complied known tournament winnings.
Breaking out the actual salaries and other forms of income is what is going to be news-worthy if/once it happens. It's the piece of the puzzle that is missing.
That said, fuck yeah Bisu.

WTF is Painkiller? Millions in prizes in 2004-2005, and I've never heard about it lol
Update: okay, it's just Quake 3 clone... Still don't get it how did they manage to get such prize pools 9 years ago.

Megahealth, armors, rocket launcher, rocket jumps, grenade launcher, teleports, spawn kills... Graphics and level design look similar too. Please educate me about significant differencies between these two games.

I bet TheOddOne (lol) made alot of money with TSM and his stream making 30-40k viewers daily for hours
|
lol so the thing this "article" takes its info off of http://www.esportsearnings.com/players doesn't have even close to the full amount of info on Halo players. Ogre 2 has won tons of events (over 40 Halo MLG events I believe) including multiple $100k National Championships at MLG, so he would no doubt have to be there somewhere, despite having to split a lot of the prize money 4 ways (sometimes 2 ways in doubles events and sometimes money just for himself because of 1v1 events). It lists 9 of his 1st place finishes despite him having over 4 times the amount of wins as that. If I cared more I would try to dig up how much money he has won in total, but I'm not sure how hard some of that info is to find.
edit: And if we are talking salaries too then IIRC his team had a 1 million dollar contract with MLG for atleast a year. Plus the NBA player Gilbert Arenas "owned" the team. No clue what that entailed though, if it was really anything at all.

You realize by your logic every Quake game is a clone of the previous title right? And yet there's so many subtleties that people who played competitively will be able to point out... -_-
Biggest differences would be the weapons (DURR THERE'S ROCKETS THAT MEANS IT'S QUAKE... no... -_-) and the movement system which worked quite differently.
Oh and super protip: rocket jumping existed before Quake.

Yeah it's a pretty shoddy ranking to be honest. Like others have pointed out on previous pages, it's not really relevant if you don't include other means of revenue like streaming and advertisements (I'd wager BoxeR and NaDa earned a decent amount from the latter, given their popularity ^^)

Yeah that's because guess what, they are both the same genre, FAST FPS. By your logic warcraft and starcraft and even going as far as AgeOfEmpire2 are all clones. It's same genre, but the game is completely different. More so than sc2 and brood war. They're merely the same type of game.

I'm a bit curious why Fatal1ty is listed as Quake and CS. I didn't know he ever played Counter-Strike, did he ever actually achieve anything in CS?

Disregard the video, read the top comment. Definitely cannot be sure if it's legit, but it does seem like his attitude. He dabbled in Counter-Strike because it was getting big, and yes he was really good in its early days, but then along came Painkiller...
Like someone pointed out on the previous page, Painkiller was a major oddity. It was a fantastic game in its own right with an absolute fuckload of money pumped into it, and yet the playerbase was significantly smaller than that of other competitive shooters at the time.
Now that you mention it, it's funny he's listed as Quake and Counter-Strike, considering about half of his total winnings come from Painkiller alone. ($150k from a single CPL tournament alone)

Nice, but sadly this are still peanuts.....

I find it hard to believe 430 made more than Zhou, who is widely considered richest dota player in China.
Edit: I guess they just took all the international tournaments and turns out they made exactly the same (SURPRISE!)...
