Mars One wasn't funded by a single entity though, if I recall correctly it was supposed to be sponsored or funded through live streams in the colony. Is there a mission site for this I am missing? http://mars-one.com/en/ I could swear i read through a thread about this on teamliquid before. Yes, Mars One was supposed to be (at least partly) funded by making a reality show out of it, or something similar.

The thing that irritates me is that the billionaire is saying that NASA and other similar organizations are wasting their time; that we should just go ahead a colonize mars. But they are wasting their time. Zubrin presented this plan years ago. The technology was available then, and it's available now. The billionaire isn't who you should be listening to - you should listen to Zubrin. I am a big supporter of the Mars Direct plan, and would recommend The Case for Mars (his book on the subject).

The first thought that entered my head was "You won't be able to watch GSL", and that pretty much did it for me.

For all those who is saying that 500k is a lot of money aren't very ambitious, and no it is not a lot of money... I don't think that we should be discussing whether or not money is the issue, finding people to go there, qualified people is going to be the hard part. I don't want to look it up but does anyone know if there is a lot of solar radiation on Mars since it doesn't have a strong magnetic shield like the Earth does? I feel like this is going to be a big problem for sustaining human life for longer than a couple years.

I'm sure that you could get people to live there once there is a habitable, stable, colony there. But being one of the first is going to suck. I don't know how I'd make the money, but I'm sure I'd manage. I'd write a book and make the money back anyway :p. I can't remember about radiation exactly, but it is mentioned by Zubrin and accounted for.

I wrote a scientifical essay about mars colonisation and I can promise, that it is definitely impossible to life on mars, so therefore there is no need to discuss about such a project as of yet.

What is of concern to me is what others have mentioned already. Qualification and eligibility. Space X pictures 40-somethings with sizable nest-eggs rallying to make a life-altering move that will delay their retirement inevitably, while simultaneously promising toil and uncertainty in exchange for money. I would understand being paid to lay the foundation for future colonization, especially since it would attract qualified, younger people, with more breeding potential and would make more sense than a "build your own Florida, but on Mars" retirement village concept. Whatever you need to do to get funding, I guess.

I figured that they would have a solution for that since it is such a huge problem.

That being said, if I had the money I'd at least spend a lot of time thinking about this :D

I love space and all, but I don't think we should be setting up large settlements if there isn't a point to them beyond their own existence. I don't think you're gonna find that many people who will want to spend the rest of their lives on Mars just to sit there. That being said, if I had the money I'd at least spend a lot of time thinking about this :D But they wouldn't be sitting there they would be exploring, prospecting, building, and trying to make the colony self sufficient economically. Of course it would not be the only colony, trade built the world and the Solar System is no exception. Zubrin actually explains this in painful detail in his book "The Case for Mars." Link

think about the trillions that could live if we dont kill ourself off, for potentially millions of years into the future. think about all that life quality. if that were to happend compared to if we were to kill ourself in 30 years, the ratio of total life quality for the next 30 years to the life quality in the situation where we dont kill ourself would be 1:millions. the only thing we should ever be focused on as a civilization is to think of the best current ways to maximise the chance of reaching civilization immortality
