Well while I agree with Probe1 and a lot of the other comments in principle (and about the article appearing in FHM of all publications), I thought this article was overall pretty good. It highlights women who have risen to some status in the extremely male-dominated environment of professional gaming, which they have a huge passion for. The questions were appropriate and helped to give the reader a quick sense of where the individual came from/their background in ESports.

Since I found nothing objectionable in the content, I was initially worried about how the sort of pictures they would post might de-legitimize the article, in the way that has been mentioned, but I didn't get the sense I was looking at pictures in FHM at all. The pictures are tasteful in their respect. There are other gamer girls that are more of the career model types (who would gladly provide pics with nudity), but there is a reason that those girls aren't as respected as the women interviewed here. And I'm sorry but considering the type of content in the rest of the magazine, I honestly can't see people (even the 15 yr olds) coming to these specific pages and going "OMG BEWBS!"...

All things considered, I thought the article was well done and would disagree wholeheartedly that this is any kind of step back for women in ESports.

What for effect has an article in FHM on the amount of women playing sc????
None as far as i know, at least i dont see it.
Most women (read 99.99%)dont even read the magazine, and i doubt sc community will evolve in a sex hungry women chasing community just because of an article in FHM.

If annything its just good publicity.
Gamers have a nerdy image, this article will only improve the image by showing that you dont have to be a nerd to like games.

annyway:They forgot megumi

I agree with most of your post, especially about Megumi! But i'm actually sure that more women than you think read the magazine. They may not have the subscription, but their boyfriends, guy friends, husbands maybe, idk but i'm just saying.

However I do think that a bunch of very scantily clad pictures combined with shallow questions would have made bad publicity. I would argue that any message (not on the topic of intercourse) that is accompanied by gratuitous nudity and an obvious whole-hearted reliance on sex appeal, loses almost all, if not all, of it's legitimacy

maybe probe1 should write that article and sent it to Times, or maybe make a video and put it on CNN..

He has a point, I also expected something else considering the thread title. If you want to showcase successful women in gaming (as in actually being a progamer) why no Gaming magazine article? AND WHY NO TOSSGIRL?

My thoughts exactly. No matter how well done the article was, these women have no grounds to stand on if they're heckled out of the next venue they appear in.

Seriously, whine about sexism but plaster yourself on a fap-mag.

People like Rachel Seltzer or Anna Prosser get tons of respect from me because in a small industry that is 99% male you have to be really strong (I guess? I cant think of a better word atm) to work there. They work really hard, stay informed, put out content, etc.

But people like Tara Babcock. Fuck her. That is so incredibly demeaning (to women) I cant even understand how she can create a brand around herself just by showing off her tits and saying she likes video games (look at her twitter background among other things). It makes it 10x harder for people like Anna or Rachel to become legitimized. I was so disappointed when Day9 advertised her.

But people like Anna, Rachel, megumixbear, TSL.Yuna, LaniBot (even Ares the mod) keep it up! You guys are doing fantastic and thank you so much for helping e-sports grow from its small niche.

... Read the article -_- it just is introducing the ladies who actually do stuff in eSports to more mainstream media.
Stop thinking being in a magazine = bad -_-?

[given that I don't live in singapour i can only comment based on how FHM is read and who its read by, in the UK]

its really not doing that though, it's putting them into a place that essentially sells the idea of sex to adolescents (the general audience that buys FHM in the UK anyway)...

This is a great article, and all the photos are great, but are hardly overtly sexy. I think you're grasping at straws.

Is the misspelling in Anna Prosser's alias intentional as a spoof of Incontrol or did someone screw up there?

That is because she is known in the gaming community in general. She has appeared on some TV shows and is a host for IGN and is in a lot of their videos for weekly gaming updates. It is not surprising she is more known in the general gaming community.

While I agree in general with the caution a lot of people have re the way women are represented in esports culture, I think on the whole this article comes under the category of good exposure rather than sexist trivialisation.

Good work Kels. (Hope to see you streaming sc2 again one day!)

I don't get while people are getting all upset, especially the guys. Think of it this way, this is to help with gals in the community in more than one way. You as a guy gamer do things in a certain way, and some of you are so thick headed that you don't realize other people like different things. Maybe the gals enjoyed doing this? What's wrong with that, it's no different than you enjoying playing or watching some pod casts for fun.

Allow freedom among the other games and be open minded, I would think this is more of one of the places you need to understand this. This isn't really just for the guys, it's for the gals too. I don't like flower blankets, but the girls I dated did, and it didn't bother me in the end if they exchanged my bed covers to make them feel more comfortable. In this situation you aren't even making a minute sacrifice, so complaining doesn't make sense. I say this is 2 steps forward no steps back. The only ones who are taking steps back are those who continue to just disagree with all of this. You guys seriously have no idea how much shit girl gamers get, play on your girlfriends account sometimes in an MMO, it's mind boggling.

its always harder to argue against those that are on the moral high ground, and i'm rather bad at doing so. but like the last 2 posters, i do agree that i do not see anything wrong with these articles in general (barring the magazine its being featured in which i dont really care or see whats wrong with it).

good job kelly, keep it up!
