I love a lot of Seltzers interviews, she brings a lot out of the players and makes them more fun =P

I've no idea how FMH translates into diffrent regions with its demographic, but FHM (uk) is almost the last place I'd want to be featured as a 'gamer girl'... I'm really not sure what the goal of things like this are... it would be akin to Attitude doing an artical on the 'hottest' guy gamers... would that be a good thing?
I guess it raises the profile, but least in the uk version, it would be raising the profile to people who don't and probaly wont care.

Thanks girls for taking one step forward and two steps back.
Okay so apparently the thread dies after I post this. Instead of leaving a shitty one liner I'll expound my initial response.
When I saw this I thought of this. No real focus on the talent or level of skill. Just sex appeal and weird fans. Maybe if I was 15 instead of 25 I would approach this differently but, regrettably, I've had a lifetime of experience to dull the sensation of OMG TET TETS!.
^ If this was not the intention then I have to ask, why FHM? FHM is pretty much a softcore playboy. I wouldn't write a research paper and submit it to the national enquirer if I wanted to be respected for my views. I wouldn't appear in a sex-oriented periodical if I wanted to be judged on my personality or talent at Starcraft.
So, that's the summary version of my views. You can cite the article being an intriguing interview with gamer girls but I don't think people will read them as closely as they will stare at cleavage. If that's what it takes to be noticed or at least the approach desired then that's fine by me. I rarely post or think about this subject. Just don't go back later and ask why women are underrepresented, objectified or poorly respected when you've willingly appeared in FHM. I'm not making an audacious claim that this instance is responsible. I just don't see how it could possibly help.

Sadly my edit came five minutes too late. If you were in MLG magazine or any other gaming periodical I wouldn't bat an eye. It was the choice of venue that sabotaged any respectable intent for me.

its really not doing that though, it's putting them into a place that essentially sells the idea of sex to adolescents (the general audience that buys FHM in the UK anyway)...

I think most women should avoid magainzes that sell them as objects of desire when they are doing so much more, yes.

Turning anything like this into a discussion about sexism in gaming is at least something that will definitely do more harm than the article itself could do (though I doubt it will), in my opinion. What you definitely do not want is a walk on eggshells when it comes to female gamers, and yet that is what is collectively forming.

Whilst I don't read it, not even sure if you can get it in the UK, I've seen a playboy. Apart from the centrefold there weren't any girls in it, it was all just articles. I haven't seen an FHM, but if it's even more softcore then I can't see the issue.
Anyway, regardless, the content is nothing like "TET TETS", and the people included aren't like Tara Babcock (although Jessica Chobot tends too much towards that for my liking, she's nowhere near that).
Also, arguably, it's a great magazine to put it in because of the audience it targets. Perhaps by targeting males of a certain age it helps to legitimise female gamers by putting them in context as professionals with accurate writing. I really didn't think it was objectifying them in the article, and it put them across like they'd earned it not just because they might look pretty (apart from Chobot which it isn't possible to do so for... who I criticise again as a choice but then she's a big name).
TL;DR Good content, magazine doesn't matter. Shouldn't have chosen Chobot.

lol...why does it seem that some members of the "sc2 community" harbor some kind of bitterness or resentment towards females? It is impossible to divorce the fact that they are gamers from the fact that they are also female. If their gender (or appearance) makes you uncomfortable the fault is completely your own. If you are unable to "respect them" or "take them seriously" that's your fault, not theirs.

I totally agree with you on this Probe1. No offense kelly, but I'm not sensitive to this kind of article at all. I don't think it emphasizes the "life of gamer girl" and It's for me more like of a "oh some pretty girl play video games, go nerds buy this paper right now !". I don't think it does justice for your gender imo. As an avid LoL player (yaeh you can blame me for that ^^), I'm quite annoyed to see many girl livestreams with boobs all over the screen. If you want to be considered as a good gamer that wants to earn some respect, you've gotta show your skills and try to improve instead of showing boobs and begging to get carried by higher elo male player to make you look cool.
For me, and I'm not sexist or anything else (I think!), but when i see Rachel Quirico in a very short dress having some interviews with some LoL players, It feels weird to me. It seems too "cliché" . You can have the same girls, it's not a problem for me, but I'd rather seeing those girls being more "natural" (like anna, who I think always looks natural when I see her on some video) than being there only for exposure.
Once again, I don't mean to be offensive to the "girls", just my opinion.

Man, when I'm doing a lecture to some students, I don't come to them dressing like a party boy. If i want respect from them, I need to give them what they're looking for, in my case, culture and not modeling. It's not the fact that they're female, it's the fact that many times, they're putting their "look" and "pretty face" before their actual knowledge. Once again, if they were models and that we were watching a "Christian Dior" show, it would be perfectly fine, but it's video games and they're gamers/casters.

I noticed this too and figured it was probably glare/console under the desk, but then it's just bad photography. There's no excuse for the console not to be on the other side under the desk so it's visable or take the shot from another angle so you can see what's on the tv.

It's become somewhat fashionable (though lord knows why) for girls to label themself as a "geeky girl" in today's society. Our problem is with pretty faces who say this to garner more attention. But unless you know what THAC0 means, or who Grand Moff Tarkin is, or what a dopefish was, then you're not a geeky girl... you're just someone who plays videogames, like pretty much 90% of people under age 30.

There is no such thing as bad publicity so i realy dont understand how people can complain that this is bad for women or sc.
"Just don't go back later and ask why women are underrepresented, objectified or poorly respected when you've willingly appeared in FHM"
What for effect has an article in FHM on the amount of women playing sc???? None as far as i know, at least i dont see it. Most women (read 99.99%)dont even read the magazine, and i doubt sc community will evolve in a sex hungry women chasing community just because of an article in FHM.
If annything its just good publicity. Gamers have a nerdy image, this article will only improve the image by showing that you dont have to be a nerd to like games.

Well while I agree with Probe1 and a lot of the other comments in principle (and about the article appearing in FHM of all publications), I thought this article was overall pretty good. It highlights women who have risen to some status in the extremely male-dominated environment of professional gaming, which they have a huge passion for. The questions were appropriate and helped to give the reader a quick sense of where the individual came from/their background in ESports.
Since I found nothing objectionable in the content, I was initially worried about how the sort of pictures they would post might de-legitimize the article, in the way that has been mentioned, but I didn't get the sense I was looking at pictures in FHM at all. The pictures are tasteful in their respect. There are other gamer girls that are more of the career model types (who would gladly provide pics with nudity), but there is a reason that those girls aren't as respected as the women interviewed here. And I'm sorry but considering the type of content in the rest of the magazine, I honestly can't see people (even the 15 yr olds) coming to these specific pages and going "OMG BEWBS!"...
All things considered, I thought the article was well done and would disagree wholeheartedly that this is any kind of step back for women in ESports.

But i'm actually sure that more women than you think read the magazine. They may not have the subscription, but their boyfriends, guy friends, husbands maybe, idk but i'm just saying. However I do think that a bunch of very scantily clad pictures combined with shallow questions would have made bad publicity. I would argue that any message (not on the topic of intercourse) that is accompanied by gratuitous nudity and an obvious whole-hearted reliance on sex appeal, loses almost all, if not all, of it's legitimacy

People like Rachel Seltzer or Anna Prosser get tons of respect from me because in a small industry that is 99% male you have to be really strong (I guess? I cant think of a better word atm) to work there. They work really hard, stay informed, put out content, etc.
But people like Tara Babcock. Fuck her. That is so incredibly demeaning (to women) I cant even understand how she can create a brand around herself just by showing off her tits and saying she likes video games (look at her twitter background among other things). It makes it 10x harder for people like Anna or Rachel to become legitimized. I was so disappointed when Day9 advertised her.
But people like Anna, Rachel, megumixbear, TSL.Yuna, LaniBot (even Ares the mod) keep it up! You guys are doing fantastic and thank you so much for helping e-sports grow from its small niche.

Anna looks amazing.
I feel like they could have done a better shot of Rachel.

Is the misspelling in Anna Prosser's alias intentional as a spoof of Incontrol or did someone screw up there?

That is because she is known in the gaming community in general. She has appeared on some TV shows and is a host for IGN and is in a lot of their videos for weekly gaming updates. It is not surprising she is more known in the general gaming community.

zemotion looks like a badass most definitely. I'm in love again :D

While I agree in general with the caution a lot of people have re the way women are represented in esports culture, I think on the whole this article comes under the category of good exposure rather than sexist trivialisation.
Good work Kels. (Hope to see you streaming sc2 again one day!)

I don't get while people are getting all upset, especially the guys. Think of it this way, this is to help with gals in the community in more than one way. You as a guy gamer do things in a certain way, and some of you are so thick headed that you don't realize other people like different things. Maybe the gals enjoyed doing this? What's wrong with that, it's no different than you enjoying playing or watching some pod casts for fun.
Allow freedom among the other games and be open minded, I would think this is more of one of the places you need to understand this. This isn't really just for the guys, it's for the gals too. I don't like flower blankets, but the girls I dated did, and it didn't bother me in the end if they exchanged my bed covers to make them feel more comfortable. In this situation you aren't even making a minute sacrifice, so complaining doesn't make sense. I say this is 2 steps forward no steps back. The only ones who are taking steps back are those who continue to just disagree with all of this. You guys seriously have no idea how much shit girl gamers get, play on your girlfriends account sometimes in an MMO, it's mind boggling.
|
its always harder to argue against those that are on the moral high ground, and i'm rather bad at doing so. but like the last 2 posters, i do agree that i do not see anything wrong with these articles in general (barring the magazine its being featured in which i dont really care or see whats wrong with it).
good job kelly, keep it up!
