mormons are a cult with very reactionary positions on a variety of issues.
apparently they have these 'excommunication' things too obviously a form of exile and in earlier ages meant probable death for the guy being exiled. it's social control

Nah, church didn't start until the 19th century, so putting people to death didn't fly in general. It just means you're shunned by all your neighbors and family, no biggie.

I don't know... Romney's position on issues doesn't seem to be a reaction to his church.
I spent a fair amount of time researching Mormonism due to one of my good friends while growing up being Mormon, and I do not find much of redeeming quality. Their religious canon approaches Biblical matters in a very haphazard way; it is as though they had forgotten that the Bible's original authors lived well over a thousand years ago in their authorship, and it comes off as accordingly silly. The golden plates and "biblical" revisionist history of Joseph Smith seem like little more than an adhoc excuse to run off into the woods with a bunch of women and pretend no one can touch you. Then again, read the holy books yourself, my opinion is somewhat biased. That kid I grew up with ended up molesting his sister, and then have the Mormon church and the rest of his family basically give him penitential refuge so that he could properly "atone for his sins".

If you've ever seen the South Park episode where they play out the origins of the church, it is actually 100% accurate, if not flatteringly presented.
I think Romney committing critical time in Pennsylvania is a sign of desperation now, his "expanding the map" explanation makes 0 sense if he thinks he can win on the swing states. You don't commit time on the last day to "expand the map" if you're feeling good about your chances.
From the religious people that I know (we talk about the election togeather and how we're gona steal the election from the democrats from our tax exempt cabins up north don't tell the govt k?) Mormanism is a cult inside utah, outside of that its a pretty normal religion. Mormanism is really fucked up and a lot of guys I know wouldn't want anything to do with a morman as president. But beacuse obama seems to be making it a non issue and romney is from mass Its not really being brought up with people.

Yes, that is one of the downsides of living in a swing state. My Ohio area code cell phone is blowing up everyday all day and I'm losing my mind.
I don't really care if it's a "weird" religion or cult, my only problem is it isn't a world religion, it's a Christian epilogue made by Americans for Americans to tell us Jesus came to America. The whole premise of the religion makes for a horrible image to other Christian-predominant countries.
It's funny because my friend from Pakistan respects Americans who are Mormon more than those from other Christian denominations, though he doesn't mind Catholics. Kind of expected though I suppose.
