In the LoL subforum on this very site (SHOCKING, I know, that some people like both SC2 AND LoL), we joke about topics like these and the misinformed SC2 players who consistently bash LoL on grounds like "it's too easy" and "it's not fun to watch."

Please, keep up the comedic gold, fellas, I'm all ears.

It makes sense how popular LoL is, social game that is relatively easy to play and good for the casual and groups of buddies to play while having a chat etc, it also has a competitive aspect if you want to go hardcore. Old school RTS like sc2 is niche because the idea of 1v1ing alone in a room for hours on end isn't appealing to a society that doesn't value being lonely for long periods of time.

well said, I agree 100%.

Understand that when the sensible folks say that LoL is easy.. we mean that LoL is in fact an easier game compared to SC/DotA. Thinking otherwise is simply not true. And this is coming from a current fan of LoL.

K, I think I've got a pretty good perspective and I'm tired of seeing fans on both games (as much as I hate to use this phrase) shitting on eachothers game all day.

I've been ~2100 in LoL, thats top 250-ish. I've also held top 17 in NA for a while back at the end/slightly after the end of the beta in SC2 as VTImpacT.

As a CONSUMER/VIEWER standpoint, I think both games are just about equal. Both have their "boring" phases, that lead up to a climax in the game (mid/lategame in sc2, and lategame and teamfights in LoL) Sc2 casters can provide a lot more in-depth analysis of a game due to their knowledge of the game and that most things in Sc2 have a linear progression (He's going for robo, odds are he's going to get a robo facility and then colossus range and go colossus.) Where-as LoL is a much more dynamic and flowing game, where a team can suddenly shift from playing extremely passively to extremely aggressive whenever they want. Its like Mech being able to get up, run around and act like stimmed Bio and be just as effective. This is REALLY hard on commentators to catch all the action. It's almost impossible to read when someone is randomly going to be aggressive in lane, and things like player thought processes are much harder to analyze than a build in sc2 that will very likely go one way or the other.

LoL is hurt however, by the lack of professionalism and community involvement among its top tier players. If you've ever listened to a high-level stream, its "HOLY FUCK MY TEAM FUCKING SUCKS YOU FUCKING F-GGOTS N-GGERS OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK!" almost across the board. LoL needs a djWheat or Day9, someone willing to take responsibility for the community and grow the game that way and show some class. The teams need to get more professional as well, m5 is the only one that's really done it. Look at EG or coL compared to ANY LoL team, and it's kinda scary how much Sc2 teams are to, well, BUSINESSES, which is what ANY team really is at the end of the day.

I think both have a shot at being an E-Sport, appealing to different audiences. I know that I love both games, but sometimes I get tired of losing 10 games in a row because my teammates just won't come together and do anything and sit there arguing the entire game. For me, sc2 is probably a better fit because its a representation of MY skill and my skill alone, and a head-to-head game will always be better for displaying one players skill. But at the same time, games like Halo and CS:S have always succeeded because its a display of teamskill, and working together with 4 other players is a different kind of skill. Sure LoL may be MUCH easier to play for ONE person. You don't need 300APM and thousands of hours studying the game, but its the coordination factor that's so difficult and that puts it on the same tier as Sc2.

TL;DR - BOTH CAN BE E-SPORTS. There are fans for one that hate sc2, fans for Sc2 that hate LoL, but A LOT OF FANS FOR BOTH, LIKE ME AND A BUNCH OF MY FRIENDS.

As a person who plays LoL almost daily with friends, often 5+ hours, Im so fucking angry at the world for accepting this game as an E-sport. It's just not designed for it (Anti-fun concept derp) it is in ground and basis designed as the casual version of DotA/HoN. Riot is playing it off awesomely though and i wish blizzard would follow their concept.
Just because it has a lot of players doesn't make it suitable for an E-sport. To me it makes about as much sense as playing farmville competitively.

Serious question: why do you care?

Is there any proof that LoL is pulling viewers or prize money from SC2? Is there anything to suggest LoL will kill BW, seriously if WC3/Dota/SC2/etc couldn't kill BW in Korea does LoL really stand a chance? Why is this such a huge issue to you that people may want to watch LoL played competitively?

I ask this as someone who has never watched nor played LoL.

If anything LoL is pulling new people into e-sports; people who may expand to watching SC2/BW. So why is this bad exactly???

You can't play it competitively in the same aspect as other competitive games (I'm open for debate on this, just PM me). That is the reason i do not want to see it played as an E-sport. I'm very happy for the growth of E-sports and all, but LoL is not the game to lead the charge. I don't have anything against the people watching LoL (who mot likely play LoL as well) but more at 1) tournament organizers jumping the bandwagon and 2) Riot starting to advertise LoL as an E-sport when it never should be

It is understandable for both parts to do this, because it makes a lot of short-term money (which is what E-sports organizers really need to grow at the moment) but that still doesn't mean i like them for it.

And if people start watching sc2/BW because of LoL that is amazing but to me it simply doesn't justify making a casual game into an E-sport.

Oh, and these are obviously just my own opinions after playing way more LoL than sc2 or BW. I don't have absolute facts that LoL is easier than other games :3 Now, that anyone who does not play LoL would ever watch such a boring game is a whole different topic. I certainly don't understand it.

So many things said about SC2 are being said here about LoL, and the same people attacking LoL now are the same people who defended SC2 back then.

Funny, isn't it?

The problem with free games like LoL is that they can lose popularity just as fast as they gained it. And while it's great that Riot puts so much money back into the tournament scene, they do that because they need to buy loyalty from their players - otherwise they will just switch to the next good free game, or even the next MOBA game. They know they need to build a strong foundation because DOTA2 and Blizz DOTA will hit them like an earthquake.

edit: not to mention, kotaku is gawker so their opinion on ESPORTS is about as valuable dirt.

LoL is very different then other free games before lol. LoL is not a game that can lose popularity fast, mostly because its so dam addicting and everchanging. I got the game in closed beta, have played over 2 thousand games over almost 3 years now and still play leagues on a somewhat regularly basis.

LOL, what. How does a casual game that has no competitive aspect become to the most competitive game in the most competitive country? If this is warn worthy so be it, but I just don't see how the lackluster title called LoL is at the top of eSports. I guess DotA2 will easily become the biggest eSport at this rate.

Like exactly this kind of comments make no sense. How does it have no competitive aspect? Of course it does, it even has multiple different ranked ladders, where you can actually see your position in comparison to the entire game population(not just a single league). Just because a game is fun to play doesn't mean that it isn't competitive. And again I'd like to point out that SC2 actually casualizes itself far more than LoL.

Ranked ladders? I have friends who played DotA/HoN who played LoL for 2 weeks and hit top 10 on the LoL 'competitive rankings' just to prove how big of a joke it is. The game is completely dumbed down for casual play and almost every competitive aspect of DotA was removed for the making of LoL. When are YOU and the rest of the LoL fan base going to realize Riot games is simply sucking up all the profits they can.

Mikey that is a complete lie. To even be able to get on the ranked ladder you have to be level 30 which takes far more then 2 weeks and then when you have reached level 30 your looking at atleast a 100 games (if you win more then twice as much as you lose) to get to a high place in the ladder..

lets say your friend never loses, or loses very rarely cause *lol is so easy* you are looking at 200 games (to get to 30 then to get to top 10), and lets say each game is 35 min (now im bad at math) but thats what 120 hours of gaming?

Your friend can play for 120 hours in 2 weeks?

I really don't think it takes that long to get to 30, I have seen people get smurfs there in under a week. It's like what, 100 games? That's 60 hours, less than most hardcore DotA players play per week. Some weeks I'll play a game for over 100 hours. It's not really far-fetched.

Anyway, it should be obvious to everybody that LoL is a less deep game than DotA. I am a DotA player but I do enjoy LoL, but every time I play it I find myself trying to do things that are not possible like deny and juke, and I need to remind myself to play far less actively since active play is not rewarded in LoL. Meanwhile, when I play LoL for awhile and switch back to DotA, I find myself forgetting how to do these simple things, and my last hitting suffers.

Riot is a great company and I wish them the best, I see this as a good sign for DotA since eventually DotA2 will overtake LoL in competitive popularity, and we'll be the ones getting all that $$$.

(Edit: misphrased, of course DotA is already far more popular competitively. I meant from a spectator standpoint.)

It takes that long to get to 30...if you don't even know you must not be 30 in LoL so when you are playing you are playing normals.

Playing actively in LoL is rewarded, harrassing and pushing lanes roaming and ganking especially from mid lane is all rewarded. You not even being 30 are just another hater who doesn't really play but plays a couple games and thinks they understand.

Also, LoL is much prettier than DotA. DotA is a fugly game that is hard on the eyes. LoL is vibrant and colorful and different spells and actions are much more easily distinguishable to the untrained eye.

Every point in your post manages to contradict one another and be wrong at the same time. Good job.

Why so

1 and 2 It snowballs hard because there is no great big equalizer aka ganking.
The rest i do not understand how it does not make sense to you.

DotA/HoN has 10x more snowballing than LoL...pebbles mid with 4 kills early game? have fucking fun getting insta gibbed once he gets pkey...LoL? only a few champs can snowball...and NOT as hard at all. Ziggs is prob the best IMO for mid, love my build with him. 3 rings, boots, then large rod. Q can 4 hit most squishies then, and ez as shit to farm.

But here is the thing, just because the game is easy does not mean that it is noncompetitive. In fact, i doubt anyone would say a game like Chess or Poker is noncompetitive/easy but in terms of pre-set mechanical skills necessary to play the game they both require absolutely none...

This. We know LoL. We play LoL. And we like LoL. Still it's an easy game.

But....if people say that then they most likely think so.....How can you bash them for that? Even if they would be wrong (But they probably are not) how does that give you ground to bash them for their opinions on a topic soley based on opinions (fun to watch) and evidence pointing the other way (easy to play)?
