As a person who played DotA very competitively for more than 3-4 years (My team, DP, finished 3rd 3 times at the first MYM Opens, the most prestigious tournament at the time), I can say that I am extremely disappointed that games such as LoL and even DotA for that matter are getting such attention as esports. These are casual games, they are not games with high skill ceilings. In fact, the skill ceiling in them is very low. The only thing that matters at the "highest" level is teamwork - how well can you coordinate with your teammates to get the best combination of heroes and to execute all your moves. The rest is moving one unit with 4 spells around and hitting creeps when they're low on health, something you can learn in 1 month of play.
It's embarrassing that such games get more attention than a game such as brood war, or even sc2, which require 10+ hours of practice per day to master, as well as actual skill. The people that say it is just a "different kind of skill" should go and watch a few FPVODs of Flash and then of some of the best lol or dota players.
But as one person said before, I guess it's the age of casuals indeed.. :S

I'm very interested in the TV ratings myself. Without incentives like free skins to show up live or links in the client to attribute to the viewercount, how many will tune in to the ongamenet channel directly? I don't particularly like the game (I played for a few months, unfortunately can't stand watching) but I'm curious to see how far it can go.

i have no idea how this game is so popular i was playing this since almost release and i liked it alot but now i just i got dota 2 beta the difference is HUGE. also i always hoped sc2 the next big thing in korea

I think Riot puts up all the prize pools for LoL but maybe I'm wrong.
With Starleague they have to pay Blizzard too.

LoL is a thousand times more userfriendly to watch and that is all it needs. The game is good for displaying a good amount of skill and it's always FUN, maybe like 1 in a 100 LoL games is boring to watch, where like 1 in 10 dota 2 and sc2 games are boring. It just makes for a more entertaining experience for the majority of people. I find this to be great news, 10 people per games makes for much more drama and drama is the only reason esports is worth watching. you're pulling statistic out of nowhere. LoL more viewer friendly than DotA? When did Riot finally add a functional spectating or replay system? DotA's viewer system is impeccable. Never miss the action, never miss a kill, always know all vital statistics. etc.... anyway... there are arguments for both sides. You could say LoL is more active due to fighting over buffs constantly, or that DotA is because you can dive towers much earlier in the game. etc etc. I wish people in this thread informed themselves before spouting nonsense. Or at least not be rude towards other games. Is there a reason multiple esports can't coexist?
If you think those statistics were to be taken seriously, then you are by all means, a lost case. It's a figure of speech. And by being userfriendly to watch i obviously don't mean random games between herp and derp, i mean tournaments. Noone cares about normal games.

LoL becoming a prime esports is great for esports
For those worried about Dota, just wait until the game is finished and the chinese switch over, they will bring the game to new levels more accessible to the western scene(in terms of viewing and appeal) and will be another flagship of ESPORTS(everyone seems to liike in caps) whats better then one ESPORT, 2, why?Because it forces competition, simple as that.

LoL e-JustinBeieber, not e-sports

I really hope they make DOTA 2 free to play.

Also, for those who say its easy, its not 1v1, 1v1 is not LoL/Dota/Hon, its a teamsport, which makes it more difficult and competitive in a different way.

Even tho there is too much hate people should love that lol is getting all spots, perhaps blizzard will stop with their 1/3 game for 60 usd and each expansion 40 usd policy ...

How can a multiplayer game with no attainable skill ceiling be "easy"? The word just doesn't apply, you're playing against other humans...

I would not say that since some people work better with a team than alone.

Glad to see LoL making it to the big stage.

Yeah, thats true. And the fact that Riot is the biggets contributor to prize pools when it comes to LoL events while events need to pay Blizzard to have Sc2 events lol.
Like someone else said, Riot actually promotes esport that way while Blizzard(Activision?) only wants to make money of it.

What I like about LoL is the lore...couldn't care less about SC2's story.

if esports is ever going to make the transition to mass media then it eventually has to become marketable to those who don't play it.
starcraft (bw/2) is already at the limit of forcing viewers to suspend disbelief with its sci-fi alien theme. a game like LoL with its overbearing fantasy theme with so many different spells and items to understand will never make it to the next level.
to those who say it is the age of casual gaming; well yes it is. the fact is that more people play video game. alot more. therefore this lends itself to promoting games that everyone can pick up and play. the majority of people who will begin playing video games for the first time look to games that have simple concepts to pick up; simple design, but depth in mastery. these games must not take long to play, and shouldnt require long-term investment. hardcore games will always exist, but it is futile to think that games should always be of one sort.
anywho rant aside. LoL will do great and im glad that esports is growing, but it really just doesnt have the potential to move to greater things.

Exactly If LoL cost 60usd I would not touch that game

It's sad. Sc2 needs only 2 things to be the lol. Better and improved b.net ui and it should be f2p. Which will never happen i suppose. So we are doomed my friends.
