Who really buys 12 ounce drinks? Surely you would want a pint since that is the measurement for liquids using the old system?

If you mean technically as in how to use it in a technical field, I can say in engineering which is my field that you MUST say 0.5 meters or even 0.231 meters and not 231 mm because in complex calculations you have to do everything in SI units otherwise the conversions can get complicated real fast, and the SI unit is the meter not mm or cm. I study in electrical engineering, and we use mm all the time. The only rule is that you have to be consistent, which is probably what you tried to describe above. You can't have something in meters, and then something else in mm, as that will break your brain in complex calculations. But if everything is in mm, and the answer you're looking for is in mm, there is absolutely no reason to not save yourself some trouble with decimals, and just use "mm" instead of "0.xx" or worse "xx * 10^-3"

Anyway, we don't really use these systems because they're convenient or whatever, they were "imposed" to us, so we're stuck with them.

Kelvin is 100 times easier to use in calculations, as it starts at 0 at absolute 0, so it can only go up. Celsius starts 0 at water freezing point, so you end up going into minus a lot of the time. Most temperature based equations is based on kelvin for this reason. For every day use, theres no difference, but then again, the same can be said for imperial vs metric. Its in calculations it really makes any difference.

Half a meter, two and half kilometer, etc... And altought it isn't very used nowadays people used to apply quarters 'quarters' to some measures too. Metric, at home, at work and in all my country.

I'm referring to the everyday usage for people. 0°C is when water freezes, 100°C is when water boils. 15°C means I better wear a long sleeve shirt and 35°C is when I should chuck a sickie and head to the beach ![]()

"Standard units are more practical and convenient. No one goes to the grocery to buy 400ml drink" If you didnt grow up with Imperial then thats just wrong. People who use metric no exactly how much 333 ml, or how much 500ml are, there's absolutely nothing impractical or inconvenient about it. "No one buys 5 meters of wood" Yea cause that doesnt make sense, just like you dont buy x feet of wood. Both of the "advantages" in the OP are entirely untrue, there is absolutely no advantage in imperial whatsoever, except for not having to change. But of course there's already been a billion TL threads about this and I dont even know why I posted this

No one buys 5 meters of wood, instead, they buy it is 1x1x12, all in feet. .... This is true in both systems. In America the price for fabric (or something similar) is probably listed as dollar/yard. In Europe, the price is listed as euro/m. An American football field is 100 yards. A European soccer field is 100 meters. In America the speed signs say 60 mph max, in Europe they say 100khmh max. it's a matter of convention. When everyone uses the same system, they will make and sell the stuff in a convenient quantity. I think your thinking errors comes from looking at the metric system from a standard view point. For example, milk is sold in quarter liters, half liters, liters, 2 liters and 5 liters. Not in 354.882355 ml, which is what it would be if we would try to follow the standard system in Metric. As for wood, this is sold / meter. And if it's fire wood, instead of selling by the kubic meter, it is sold as "stère" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stere This is a kubic meter of stacked firewood. The more you know ![]()

I wonder if learning two systems of measurement at the same time has the same effect. My students use the American system in their every day lives and then metric in science class. The result? They are terrible at estimating quantities in metric because they are not used to them. Then again, they are bad at it using pounds/feet/etc also XD
