It's very easy in hindsight to say you would risk financial ruin to save a child. You know for a fact you saved a child only because you know the outcome of the situation from the video.
On another street corner, another child lying on the road. Without full knowledge of what danger the child is in but fully knowing that it might be a scam, would you risk becoming destitute for it? In other words, would you risk financial ruin on the chance you might save a life? This is the situation the passersby in the video are in.
Personally, I am hard pressed to answer 'yes' in the second scenario. I would be opening myself up to people taking advantage of me and being a victim of extortion. For those who answer 'yes', I suggest giving your money to charity to feed hungry children. That way you know you're guaranteed to be saving lives and you avoid the court fees from getting sued.
Ugh. I have absolutely no wish to watch that video. Really sad I just try to remember examples of things like the burning car video above to remember that people can also be really awesome as well.
Well, I won't watch the vid, but I wouldn't help someone in a foreign country without knowing what my rights were. I'm not going to jail for who knows how long for something like that. But I'd at least phone emergency (if i knew the number) and stick around. Even if you assume others might be helping/phoning, i'm sure 911 would rather have 20 calls for the same thing, than not even one.
If I saw anyone in trouble, unconscious, etc here in Canada I wouldn't leave their side until help arrived, even if I decided I couldn't do anything. I do have first aid/cpr though, and wouldn't hesitate to use it if I had to. (in Canada) Seeing someone in trouble/something obviously wrong, and just walking away without even calling 911. That's truly sickening.
On a side note, the Kitty Genovese story isn't quite relevant. I remember reading in Superfreakonomics that it was essentially overhyped by the media, and that several people in the complex did make emergency calls. That the bystander effect exists in the US is unquestioned; it just manifests a lot weaker than in China. I'm going to have to side with TutsiRebel on this point; it's a good shock story, but what actually happened to Kitty Genovese not quite so appalling.
I apologize for not being able to provide more direct linkage to sources.

Just like what I said...if it happens in America, they try to minimize the exposure....on the other hand, if it happens in China, they will try to exaggerate the event..
Im not saying this toddler is exaggerated, it was horrible. I am saying that people should accept that what happened to Kitty Genovese was just as bad, she was raped and killed with people watching and listening to her screams, instead of trying to forget what happened and focus more on China bashing.

Didnt the person you quoted say the exact opposite of what you said?

The guy who had CPR sued the guy who ripped open his shirt
and won.
T.T, the world is unfair sometimes. anyway its good that Blastarion has some pretty nice points here.
Can you source this? I'm genuinely interested in learning more about this case.

This doesn't make any sense.
If they are all full of empathy but fully occupied with not getting sued then why would they drive over the child?
