That said, this video is atrocious. I don't justify it in anyway, but if this is shocking to anyone you must be living on a different planet then I. It's hell on earth.

Without full knowledge of what danger the child is in but fully knowing that it might be a scam, would you risk becoming destitute for it? In other words, would you risk financial ruin on the chance you might save a life? This is the situation the passersby in the video are in. Yes. And it's different from donating my life savings to a charity because I would be directly responsible for leaving the child to die in a pool of her own blood. It matters that you have direct control over the matter.

I have taken action in a similar situation (was an older gentleman and 2 teenage boys trying to stuff him into a car, long story, happy/funny ending). The difference in the US, at least, is those people who did nothing are not given a pass on doing nothing. I'm willing to bet they caught hell, from friends and family, once that episode aired. I know if I knew anyone in that video, I'd be hard pressed to associate with them after seeing them do nothing with that guy trying to drag her off. How the hell could I trust them with anything?

Kitty Genovese has been mentioned, and yeah it may have been overblown by the media. But isn't this being overblown too? For all we know there were people calling an ambulance on the background. Dunno, its easy to see everything as bleak when you only get one perspective. And the Genovese case was not the only one, what about the girl that got raped in front of a ton of people and nobody did anything? The world is already an ugly place as it is, lets not add more with anti chinese sentiment and generalizations. Hope they catch the bastard

But yeah, this is horrible and a good example of how people act when they do not want to take the responsibility of calling for help or expect someone else to do so. The video 2 posts above me, I'd just figure the kid was lying to not go somehwhere.

It matters that you have direct control over the matter. It's easy for you to say that you would risk financial ruin... an average Chinese worker with a 100, 200 dollar income can't pay much of a hospital bill in the tens of thousands of dollars. If you can't pay, they go for your family members. You're screwing over yourself, your wife and kids (hypothetical), your parents, etc.

A similar law I've heard about is that when you run over somebody with your car, if they live you are responsible for paying them the rest of their lives, so you actually have incentive to double over and kill them instead of injuring them. Laws can sometimes be incredibly stupid, as some of you may already know.

Nothing is stopping you from giving directly to starving children. Is it only a matter because you are directly confronted with the situation that's within your control? Then I hope you never travel to 2nd or 3rd world countries because you will be left penniless from desperate orphan beggars.

Look at the face and legs of the girl at around 3:08 + Show Spoiler + speculation has it that that's the child from the future (the legs aren't visible and its face is destroyed)... creepy stuff
