How I know this is good science: The first thing they thought of was "we were wrong, lets see what others can do with this data, validate our results". I think that two things are likely here. One, experimental error (the most likely), I dont claim to be a physicist, but I am sure there are a myriad of ways in which this could happen. Two, an unexplained phenomenon that doesn't exactly allow for faster than light travel but maybe gives the appearance of it, or something related. Certainly interesting and I await confirmation and explanation. Part of me wants to hope that they have discovered something truly amazing here and it will help them on the search for a greater unifying theory.

There is no science, only God!

Big news if this isn't a mistake though.

Doubt it tbh, it would mean much of what we understand has been false. We'll see.

It could just as easily be a systemic error but I'm sure they're checking all the equipments to see if they're working as they should. It's good that they've put it online for open scrutiny as that's probably the only way someone could make sense of this. If this is genuine, it's unbelievably huge. Einstein's postulate is one of the pillars of modern physics. For it to be proven false........ *shudders*. A heck of a lot will have to be thrown out and reconsidered. It's actually quite exciting as well as frightening.

What ?
Your aware they shot the neutrino through a tunnel/tube ?
Not into the ground at an angel..

Everyone hold your horses. Muons already move at 0.99c so this might just be an overlooked effect of relativity...and also this is the news..

I would say that it is more likely to be a mistake. I mean why are these neutrino different from others? that is what I don't get.

News media simply cannot report about science since they do not care at all about the scientific process. Never trust any headlines. Ever.

Then you might want to read the article, along with the headline.

Yes I did. And I read the pdf. Proving my point.

They ran the same test over 15,000 times always coming up with the same results. The only reason they published their data is so that another laboratory could possibly run the same tests. If multiple labs come up with the same information then physics as we know it just got thrown out the window.

I don't think the scientists would ignore measuring something like that : /

They are just subatomic particles.
As far as i knew they shot one from each side and let them collide creating exotic particle's and then they analyse it.
