If there was a gay player I would be a fan instantly of his since it would be pretty ballsy to go out and say youre gay in this community. You dont have to love a players play to be a fan. Im a big SKT1 fan, not because theyre the best team (but they are) but because I like their spirit and all of their "metagame" spectacles.

The point remains though, it doesn't matter if she hasn't proven herself. If she's a beautiful girl, she can have fans and it has nothing to do with sexism. Liking someone for such a reason may be "shallow", but its not sexist.
A sexist approach would be saying that she has less value than her male counterparts precisely because of her gender. If anything its sexist in the opposite direction (males are disadvantaged to women), but even then that case has never been made.

I just don't understand what that has to do with this topic. Every player gains attention and fans because of out-of-game attributes.
Furthermore (and I hate to say it because it's harsh and a bit off topic, but) it takes a special kind of nastiness to be dissatisfied with someone receiving good treatment. Read your posts man; you are taking the position that someone should be less beloved than she is.

Well that's not really true. I don't know their reasoning behind liking her, but I would have the upmost respect for a female to became a progamer, simply because it is such a male dominated thing. People aren't fans just based off of results. People like white-ra and tlo for their creativity and the excitement of their games; a lot of people like destiny because of his attitude (I'm not discrediting any of their abilities as players, I love all three of them). I would follow a female progamer to support her in the hope that she does produce good results, not only when she does.

I think the above post belongs in the "Gay Starcraft Players" thread, not this one ^^

To be fair, while there are many great guys and gals in the gaming community, the proportion of sexist, racist, or generally immature people is much greater here than in any other group of people I communicate with. I hear more "bitches" and "gays" and antisemitism and"n-words" when playing games than during any other activity. Maybe it's the age group, more likely it's the veil of anonymity afforded by the internet, and perhaps it's just the culture. While this journal article certainly is unfair to Day9, it's not entirely unfounded in its accusation that gaming culture has some serious issues and excesses compared to other communities.

I'll go ahead and spell it out again for all you double-digit post count people who don't bother to read an entire thread before spewing your bullshit. Geordie Tait does not work for Star City Games, he did not write this article for profit (probably made <$50 off of it and could have written anything else for that same amount of money), and is in no way attacking Day9 if you bothered to read literally two sentences beyond that particular quote. It was a misquote, it was a mistake, get over it.
Stop downplaying it. Regardless of anything else, this misquote is pretty significant. It definitely puts day9 in a bad light and is completely false.
It's also indicative of TERRIBLE journalism. Two minutes of research shows that the quote is completely wrong... but apparently two minute is too much work.

People get called "sexist" over the dumbest things, and sometimes those who accuse others appear to be sexist themselves - even though they might not be (just like the person they accused). It's about appearances. I think the same thing with so-called "feminists" who basically deny women's sexuality (and their own, by extension). That's what I'm seeing in that article to a lesser extent. So definitely not silly reasoning IMO. Feminism has nothing at all to do with denying female sexuality. If anything, quite the opposite. Um, it can be a part of it? Obviously...
And what I mean by your reasoning being silly is this: Bitch is used very very commonly as a term for women, human women. Just because the dictionary definition means something else does not mean it's sexist to recognize that the word carries a different meaning in day to day lfe. Doesn't make the reasoning silly IMO. Calling it sexist implies that saying the word bitch always is an insult to women - women are bitches. O_owat

I think you guys are missing the point of using Day9 as an example. If he's the "best among us," what does that say about the rest? Since it's a misquote, they can just fix it using the actual quotes that exist by Day9. Maybe they had those in mind but didn't remember it perfectly when writing the article. The more attention you draw to it, the sooner people can find the real quotes which aren't exactly pretty.
If it was say Destiny or Idra or something, you'd all just say, "most of us aren't like that" or some other excuse. Those two certainly have the fan base to argue that many of us are like that anyway, or aspire to be.

I'm ok with people saying he is a terrible journalist, because well, he's not a journalist. He's just a dude writing an opinion piece for a website. I'm not ok with people saying he is attacking Day9 or writing the article for profit. Two minutes of research would have been enough to show that SCG writers don't make any money and that he loves Day9.

You can love someone all you want, it doesn't make misquoting them to further your agenda permissible.

Simply farming for hits imo. That misquote was entirely fictional, not the kind of thing that happens by accident.

I didn't read the article, but holy shit do nerds/gamers in general have fucked up opinions on women. Seriously make me cringe when I read comments.

It wasn't an intentional misquote, he had thousands of quotes to pull from. Keep in mind this quote is not in print, it's something he heard from a daily and misremembered when he wrote the article a few days later. I can vouch that what you are describing is not something Geordie would do as a person, especially when the quote is so easily proven wrong, on a website read by many SC2 players.

He doesn't get paid per hit, so where does your opinion come from?

I agree, and it's not the first time someone is trying to get hits for his/her article without doing any research before hand.

There's a difference between liking/supporting someone because of gender/race etc. and liking them because of a feature/trait etc. that developed because of their gender/race etc.
For example, supporting someone because they are "daring" and "brave" for being a female gamer is totally fine. Supporting them purely because they are a female gamer is sexism.
The first part is actually liking them because of a trait, not an external feature like gender, and is actually judging someone based on their merits. The second part is not judging someone on their own merit, it is judging them based on their gender, which is sexism.
There's a fine line between the two that is often very difficult to discern especially when it comes to other people and not yourself.

You don't write a piece like that for it to lie unwatched in a quiet corner of the internet. If you write something you want it to be read, that's pretty much the purpose. So why not throw in some controversial bullshit that will stir up attention and piss people off to create topics exactly like this one.
