Saying the community overreacted out of sexism to the Gizmodo article about Jon Finkel is just plain dumb. He is the Jordan of MtG, beloved player and overall nice guy, and he was being humiliated by some girl who could not see past that he was good at some card-game. The community would have reacted the same if Jon Finkel was gay and the Gizmodo writer had been a dude.
The Day[9] quote is taken out of context, because he was actually mostly ridiculing his young self for being pissed off about this sort of thing. He might have said 'bitch' that time, but he has done that several times as obvious parody. One time he called his mother a bitch for crying out loud!
I'm not going to read the article in full, sue me. If the author gets paid per hit, which is likely, due to the sensationalist nature of the article, then I won't pay him off. Also, the two incidents quoted have obvious flaws insofar as they are used to argue for gamer sexism.

There's a whole lot of sexism in that article, but it is all directed at men.

You know what i just found out? There is the word "nigger" in a dictionary. What a racistic book. Wait a minute... I'm a racist now too! Seriously speaking people should stop thinking about thinking about individual words, they should start thinking what is meant instead (context).

No its not worth of reading, I dont think its worth to discuss something I dont agree with. Im not a sexist btw, the "sexists" are the girls who call us nerds and doesnt hang out with us, or ignore us.

This fell apart for me when I found that Day9 said nothing like that during the episode. If you want to have the discussion, fine, but it needs to be based on actual events and not blatant misquoting.
Pretty much nothing left to see here, imo.

In the very least, I find it disingenuous to point out all the stereotypical things gamers do while defending the stereotypical views that are held about them.

QFT
I'm going through a phase of calling people "fag" my brother is gay btw, im not homophobic. Its just an insult. Sexist remarks mean nothing, it's the internet.

Wow....I swear...these silly journalists....my...god...I mean...do they try anymore? I finally understand journalism. Write something that is controversial and in this case, false, get many views, roll in money, repeat.
Not trying to shit on the guy, but they need to do some research before trying to write an article. Quote from EGiNcontroL " I did more research on a high school paper than this guy did on his article".
Sorry for the rant, it is out of my nature to do so. Have a good day guys!

Because gamers are the only ones who would use "bitch" as an insult amiright
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't girls use "bitch" as an insult too? Or is this the case that it's "their" word, which is stonewall sexism in itself.

The bigger issue regarding sexism in gaming culture can far better be seen in Live Report threads where there's either any woman playing, interviewing or presenting. Everyone seems to think they have the right to insult her, degrade her, judge her and point out everything she gets wrong where they wouldn't dream of doing that if someone like Day[9] made the same mistake. Calling someone a dumb bitch wouldn't offend many people even if it did happen though I think.
Slut, rape and the c word might be more offensive though.

There is a major difference imo.

Basically i read the quote and the following lines then just stopped.

It's not about just judging a sentence or word, you've also have to know the context.

girls can be bitches and guys can be douches. get over it

Attention whore article. I'm pretty sure day9 never said "young bitch," that makes no sense...

Also, the two incidents quoted have obvious flaws insofar as they are used to argue for gamer sexism. A woman is allowed to find MtG off-putting in a man. She is also allowed to post about how off-putting she finds this on a blog, and while I agree the tone of her article was utterly obnoxious it is not a valid excuse for the hordes of "dumb bitch, how dare she dislike Jon Finkel" posts all on the internet. That's sexism in action and if you say anything like "well she deserved it" then you're just victim-blaming. What next, "well she deserved to be raped with that shirt and saying those mean things" ?

Sorry, but this is total bullshit. A lot of girls talk like that as well. When a guy is being a bitch you will sometimes see a girl call him a bitch. And dick can be used as an insult similar to how cunt can be.
The only sexism in the gaming culture is the desperation your typical geek holds towards getting to tap the female of the species. A very large percentage of guys who do things like go out of their way to give a girl special items, or on the flip-side go out of their way to troll girls, are doing what they are doing because at their core what they really want is to get laid. That's the only sexism in gaming. And it's not like a lot of girls don't milk the positive aspect of that.

what hhwwhatt! i'm not a girl but he was telling a story and how could girls find it offence? i think that journalist has problems trying to make a issue out of nothing.
|
lol saying "young bitch" is sexist now?
Sometimes it blows my mind because sometimes it's more sexist to point out sexism in things that aren't sexist.
(Mess of a sentence, I'm sorry)

calling someone a bitch means your sexist against women now? so if i call a guy a dick am i now sexist against men?
