Very cool site. Rate your top 20 movies and comment on others people list, and see the overall average of favorites.

Make your list and post it!

it's a movie starring Jack Nicholson. he plays a nutcase.
a role he probably didn't have to do alot of research for.
i think it's a Stanley Kubrick film, but can't remember.

the movies aren't that similar (other then both featuring a crazy Nicholson)

Not to sound ignorant (since I haven't seen a lot of the movies in your list) but is this a favorite movie list or a competition to see who can look the most "cultured" by listing the oldest movies? Now maybe it's just me, but even though several of the classics are good, I rarely say "hey, let's pop in Gone with the Wind" and watch it in all its black and white glory. Are you implying with your list that in all of the movies released after 1980, only 2 of them were good enough to be on your top 20 list?

Again, I could be completely off here and look like a complete fool for saying that, but I find it quite hard to get into the older movies with the distorted sound and old fashioned picture. I don't need extravagent special effects or 5.1 surround on my movies, but I just have trouble getting into real old movies.

Awesome post. I think this is the problem with people who think they are cinephiles. They feel the need to add Citizen Kane, Casablanca, etc in order to get the list for others to appreciate. I've seen A LOT of movies - Obviously the reaction of people watching Citizen Kane is going to be different than back in the 40's. If Citizen Kane came out today and never had it come out in the 40's and it was in color and the modern version basically - it would be a flop. Not to mention that movies wouldn't be the same today with Kane. Anyway I don't really know how to set this point across but just a lot of 'wannab's' are like "omg best movie is Citizen Kane" because it's what is appreciated by real cinema connaisseurs.

The list I put up is my favorite 20 movies. Nothing in there I put in there to impress anyone or to satisfy any group - That list is simply my favorite movies. If LOTR was categorized under one movie, which I consider it to be, it would definatly be in the top 10. I'm really tired and a bit drunk - Sleep I go!

EDIT: Btw im gigglepants

First of all, I am by no means a "cinephile" nor am I a particularly heavy movie-goer. This list was made by me about a year ago anyway.
The answers to part of your comment should be self-evident. You susupect that I am trying to look "cultured" by listing older movies. Why don't I try to look "cultured" by listing newer movies? You yourself are thereby admitting that older movies have some first-rate high-brow qualities that modern hollywood junk doesn't possess.

Gone with the Wind was made in technicolor (the color qualities of which is far more expressive than non-technicolor films)

Excluding Empire Strikes Back, I technically have 1 post-1980 movie, since P&P was a A&E miniseries (superior by far to the 1940 version, with some of its unnecessary silly American commentary on British society)

Gone with the Wind tops my list because its a great sentimental epic and a historical drama (the book too, was enjoyable to read), and as the most successful movie ever I am hardly the only one to think it a great movie.

Now about the "distorted sound" and "picture quality", there are 5 movies on my list which might fit that criteria, all of them from the silent era: Kabinett des Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis, Napeoleon and Pandora's Box. With the exception of Metropolis, I think that all of the soundtracks for these movies are lost, and in their present versions substituted for by alot of cooked up nonsense. As for the distorted picture qualities, alot of it is due to film decay, I've only seen the restored version of Metropolis (with the original soundtrack), and it looks and sounds much better than previous versions. Also, much of what appears to be distorted picture from the silent era is actually expressionism, which was intentional, and designed to create a surreal enviornment, it was one of the cinematic experiments of the early days which died out by the 30s.

You'll probably also notice that I am a Bette Davis fan, alot of her movies may be difficult to follow because of the quick and clever dialogue which is so well delivered by her.

There are some decent 90s movies, but if you want rewatch value, you'll always come back to the classics.

Not at all. As the poster above mentioned, there's a certain stigma that cinephiles have about older movies. They act as if they are the be all and end all of cinema and that nothing could ever best them. This is evident in all forms of entertainment. There are people who swear that the original 8-bit nintendo had the best games and nothing will ever compare. Further, music people will say that since the 70s, no new good music has been released. Even the Starcraft community is like that. Let's say a superior game was released next week, I'm willing to bet that a large majority of this community would not accpet it and would continue to play BW and call it the best RTS of all time.

I admit that cultured was a bad word to use but at the time it seemed appropriate. I've personally seen and own a lot of movies but I'm very aware of the sheer amount of movies I've never watched. Going from personal experience (as I said above), it's just difficult to get into many of the older movies. The picture and sound make it feel like you're watching a movie instead of drawing you in and making you oblivious to the outside world.

Gone with the Wind was made in technicolor (the color qualities of which is far more expressive than non-technicolor films)

I was not aware of that. I simply picked an old movie from your list to use as an example.

Gone with the Wind tops my list because its a great sentimental epic and a historical drama (the book too, was enjoyable to read), and as the most successful movie ever I am hardly the only one to think it a great movie.

I was not picking on Gone with the Wind specifically. I was commenting on the fact that your list contained a large number of moves from the 20s, 30s, and 40s which seemed strange to me. Since 1980 there have been plenty of good movies released and while some movies are considered classics for a reason, I think in some sense they are over appreciated.

You'll probably also notice that I am a Bette Davis fan, alot of her movies may be difficult to follow because of the quick and clever dialogue which is so well delivered by her.

I'm familiar with the name but uneducated to anything she has done.

There are some decent 90s movies, but if you want rewatch value, you'll always come back to the classics.

I've always found myself always going back to my favorite new movies as opposed to popping in a classic.

I think the reason that I dont feel an affinity with older movies is because I don't watch them in the time they were released. Part of movie making and the legacy of a movie is about when it was released and the way society looked at that time. Therefore, when I watch a fifty year old movie now, I know that it is dated by fifty years and watch it in that light. I dont feel any kind of connectedness to it because I cant relate to its context as well as something that comes along at a certain time in MY life. This isn't to say that I can't enjoy it, but it just means it doesn't make as much of an impact on me. I think this is why there are so many movies and stories that get remade (other than the obvious dollar), because updating a story helps the audience relate to it in a better way.

Anyways, here is my top 20: http://www.ymdb.com/user_top20_view.asp?usersid=22039

Remember, these are my FAVORITE movies, not necessarily the best ones

Caligari as #3? It's certainly a good period film. I can appreciate it's ingenuity, and it's use of "shadows" certainly are surreal, but anyone with even a basic frame of reference would agree it's not a fantastic film. Conrad Veidt had a great physical performance as Cesare, but other than that, the film feels too disjointed, like Weine was trying too cram too many elements into it.
