Sorry, but Dream Theater and Kansas are notoriously bad bands, mostly attractive to people that enjoy prog trappings over actual substance.

I feel the same way. I used to be a huge fan of DT in my teens, but grew out of it really fast.

They've got skills, you can't deny that but in the long run skills are not enough to make a great band. They have some good pieces but again - just because the songs are complicated in their structure and quite long doesn't automatically make them good.

Some amazing songs from the top of my head.

Frank Zappa - Muffin Man.
Pantera - Floods.
Dave Mathews Band with Warren Haynes - Cortez The Killer (live cover).
Primus - Tommy The Cat.
Down - Stone The Crow.
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Lenny.

Not in any particular order. I'll just limit myself to these random 6 that came to my mind cuz I would end up writing a whole page of songs eventually.
Scrape it, grind it, peel it, hide it. The trend is over and gone forever.

I feel like about half the people posting songs in this thread are missing the point of it, which is, "Try not to name really popular songs people will know"

The Start of something Beautiful - Porcupine Tree - Prog Rock

High five. Nice user name, too.

Porcupine Tree - "Where We Would Be". PT is prog rock in general, but this song isn't. This is just 4 minutes of beautiful music, with amazing lyrics and an emotional guitar solo.

Zero fighting.

If you're interested in a particularly awesome "Cortez the Killer" cover, Built to Spill has an amazing one.

Well, this is pointless, since a lot of people listen to just a few genres. And there is a problem when those genres are hiphop, metal or electronica, since in those cases usually the rest of the world doesn't like your favourite song at all, or find it even listenable.

edit: case in point, the post below me which is practically all metal that no person not already "in the know" could like.

Read the OP dude.

"to help people find those gems in artists with massive backcatalogues or those they wouldn't normally listen to."

and

"try not to name popular songs people would already know."

Get over your musical elitism.

I realized after the 15th song that my "recently played" list has no shortage of songs so i stop here.
I apologize if some of them are too famous, but i just have no idea, I just kept Radiohead and Strokes out of the list

As written above I edited to make it more easily accessible.

Really upbeat feel-good music, and the sax is just amazing.

Caro Emerald (Dutch jazzy pop singer/songwriter):

Currently one of the best female singers in the world, if I'm honest. Really nice music.

Justice (they are pretty well known, but their remixes are even better than their solo material):

Other great remixes of Justice are MGMT-Electric Feel, Lenny Kravitz-Let Love Rule, Klaxons-As Above So Below and U2's Get On Your Boots. I just love Justice's basslines :3
