Crisis in Japan - Page 95

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Nope, however "der spiegel" has a wide spread insiders network and in the last 20 years it was right 99% of the times, its not rainbow press. I really don't know, i think the atom-lobby is belittling, the environmentals are hyping .. at least the massive increase of radiation ~100 km away indicates there has been some serious issues .. I think they won't have a 35 million people mass panic. The company driving the plant officially said that levels of radiation are "above" levels of normal operation, but they did not made any more detailed statement regarding the amount of radiation.

Temperatures were to dip near freezing overnight, but the prime minister warned that electricity would not be restored for days. Trade Minister Banri Kaeda said the region was likely to face further blackouts and that power would be rationed to ensure supplies go to essential needs. The government says it has sent 120,000 blankets, 120,000 bottles of water and 110,000 liters of gasoline in addition to bread, rice balls, instant cup noodles and diapers to the affected areas. Large areas of the countryside remained surrounded by water and unreachable. Fuel stations were closed and people were running out of gasoline for their vehicles. The government said 275,000 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters, many of them without power. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ap_on_bi_ge/as_japan_earthquake

NHK news (and the Japanese cabinet minister who is answering the press questions/giving briefings) agrees with Der Spiegel. Since NHK is one of the main Japanese news sources. I'd say the bbc expert is probably not well versed on the situation.

I don't know what's going on on that front, but I suspect the media could also be playing a role in being selective. I think because all these help has a "price tag" behind them. I don't remember which incident, but apperently a Country came out saying why they rejected a particular offer due to unreasonable price tag. Reason we don't know the price tag because non want to announce it in a public statement, it just makes them look bad. Correct me if i'm wrong.

It is not commercial driven its kind a "communtiy"-enterprise, the writers and journalists actually are stakeholders of the company, so they have been quite independent in the past. This does not mean they are not hyping and everything is right, however if the BBC and "Der Spiegel" disagree i would not trust BBC more than "Der Spiegel" (of course not vice versa :-) ).

Did you know that the company taking care of the power plants has a history of lying about the safety of their nuclear power plants, from like 1980s all the way to 2000's?

short answer: yes. Back on topic: I am pretty sure US military will be giving a lot of humanitarian aid to Japan. A lot of the pacific assigned units should be helping Japan out as much as possible. I know here in Korea they are talking about possibly helping them out with their reactor/radiation problem

It doesn't seem to be severe, but it definitely creates the image that at this point the gods just installed a new version of Sim City and are fucking with us. That was 2 months ago, not long into January that went off, erupted constantly for about a week. Took 3 days for any of the papers here to give a shit (I live in Japan) Anything reporting this now is even slower than the hilariously slow Japanese media. Anyone kicking it around twitter is scaremongering and just trolling.
