Crisis in Japan - Page 93

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

seems like german media was right regarding the meltdown ..
The problem with radiation is, that it is really hard to measure the impact as it is cancer causing for >20 years, so it is hard to say in 20 years if a concrete person dying of cancer died "because" of the radiation exposure 10 to 20 years ago. It just raises the risk for any person exposed to that radiation. This is quite similar to the effects of "passive smoking" .. you can't nail it down exactly and there is much room for good-will/bad-will interpretation of the same statistical data. For me i'm not to go with the hysteria of the german environmental movement, however it is obvious that there is a lot of belittlement from atom-power-friendly countries/media. And be sure overall tchernobyl overall caused far more than 4000 casualties, in fact the numbers are still growing ..

Anyway best wishes to the japanese nation, i am sure they will build up and rise from the mud again.
21 is half the truth

Updated thread title.

Japanese media is now getting access to those who survived and interviewing them. It makes for extremely painful watching. The total dead number displayed on screen has risen from 2000 to 3000 today.

Crazy... I was still in Japan one year ago. It's weird how I can go online and read about massive blackouts, radioactive leaks, and other scary shit like that but still chat with my friends from tokyo on facebook.

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20110313/k10014641851000.html

uh oh... according to NHK, there is a >70% chance of a M7 aftershock occurring within the next 2-3 days.

I haven't seen this video posted yet. This is truly heartbreaking, I was moved to tears. A lot of this footage I haven't seen yet, besides the beginning.

Yes, because the earthquake has been upgraded to 9.0. Unless you think I just did it for fun.

Rolling blackouts are scheduled only for Kanto tomrrow, not nation wide. All citizens are being urged to save power. Thank goodness for our solar panels.

I was on a two week trip to Japan so I was there when the tsunami hit. Although I was in Kobe at the time so I didn't even feel the quake. Good thing I started in Tokyo instead of ending there.

I'm back in Sweden now and the trip to Japan was still fantastic.

This earthquake will not discourage me to go to Japan . If i ever have the chance i will certainly go there . I just love their culture .

Thanks for that. This really got to me:

While I was tired of waiting at the station, homeless people gave us their cardboards against cold. We're always passing them by, though.

Transport facilities were dead and I was so tired waiting so long. Then, a homeless guy gave me a cardboard saying "use this, it can warm you up". I used to pass homeless people by even when they were begging... Although what he did to me was such a sweet stuff.

Zero incidents or looting reported so far. Even the day of the quake, people were lining up for hours to buy goods and the convenience stores. Some grocery stores sold one basket of food for 100 yen.

Thats incredible. With such wide scale destruction, you'd almost think looting was a given. Goes to show what a great culture the Japanese have in many respects.
When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.

Some places are saying it was 9.1. Not sure what credibility they have
