Crisis in Japan - Page 91

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

An official at Japan's Meteorological Agency says that wind direction over the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant will be monitored as it is a key factor in judging damage to the environment www.reuters.com

I'd be willing to donate $1000 to a Fundraising SC Tournament if we got some big names involved. As long as it gets some recognition, I'm hoping a $1000 head start would be enough to get others to donate as well.

The SC2 community is huge. I'm sure we could raise a fairly significant amount of money if people were willing.

And while the money might not seem like much, any bit could help, because I imagine there are thousands of people in Japan who lost their livelihood due to the damages, and they'll need help finding food etc. Any little bit would help.

I think the money would be better invested if you actually donated it to some agency working in Japan as soon as possible as opposed to funds raised by a tournament.....

Here's an idea: ask a bunch of top players if they're willing to participate, get a pretty big field to choose from, then market the crap out of the tournament. People will vote on the players they want to see in the tournament brackets by donating money.

Something like that that involves community donations could work really, really well with proper marketing and hype.

Something I don't understand is the donations. Does Japan really need it? They aren't Haiti, they have a strong economy.

I feel like the Red Cross and such organizations are just exploiting people's natural reactions to disasters: donations. I feel like Japan probably needs manpower more than money.

I'm willing to put some time into that idea.

Whatever I can help with.

Also, the quake's been remeasured to 9.0.

That's how I felt too, but that hospital I was talking about that my friend runs has its bank account open for donations.

Has the Japanese government even made a request for help from international aid agencies?

You know what's weird is that they're rejecting help from Canada for whatever reason... Canada's been on standby within hours of the quake.

The government isn't, but I think some individuals/hospitals/etc are.

Those were nations asked for help, not non profit organizations. I would recommend to wait with donations until it's clear what is needed.
Back in 1995 Japan requested help straight away and they got so many things that they had to throw stuff away.
USA didn't claim more than half the funds it got offered for Katrina. Just wait and see if your money is needed and then donate.
OR you can donate to people, which is a bad idea because there's a lot of scamers going on. So unless you have a trusted person you donate to, you shouldn't.

Thanks for the link man, will keep checking that. Unfortunately none of the names showed up, or were "status unspecified".

I've got friends in Tokyo keeping me up to date with what's going on, I'm sure they'll be able to let me know soon.

Japan as a country may not need it, but many Japanese individuals and small businesses will. There will be a long term need for emergency accommodation for a start, and without funds the manpower already present won't be able to start rebuilding.

Specialist rescue teams are the most needed resource now, but in a few weeks time it will be cash to fund the early part of rebuilding.
