Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

That sounds kinda fucked up that they would even bring that up on the news in this situation.

However, chernobyl completely crashed our raindeer market. The raindeer is a consumer of a certain lichen that is prone to absorb nutrients from air/rain and those became contaminated after chernobyl.

The raindeer is extremely important for the sami population of sweden.

edit: realistically it should have 0 impact so it's pretty stupid either way, but that's probably the reason they were concerned.

1832: The AP news agency is quoting Tepco as saying a new power line is almost ready which could end the crisis. The disruption of power to the pumps which send coolant through the reactors is what led to their overheating.

From BBC, looks like things will hopefully be ok soon

People are buying iodide tablets like mad here in Vancouver. It's pretty frustrating how bad the fear mongering has been so far.

Well one of the factors in looting is that the store owners were not exactly around immediately after katrina. How can you buy things when your bank is closed and the store is closed? A lot of the businesses in japan are still open and they aren't price gouging.

If they were closed they would not get looted. Their society as a whole on a completely another level than the one in the US.

Having expereinced myself, I must say japanese people are very polite, even to strangers.

They are also very interactive in a way, for example if you go in a restaurant, the waiters and the chefs will yell out something like "Welcome", and "Thank you" when you leave.

They are also very aware what is socially acceptable to others, like they considered it's rude if you talk on a cell phone on a bus or train, so very little people do it.

However I'm not saying every japanese are like that, but there is enough out there to maintain this sense for the rest society to follow. Like you wouldn't dare to start looting when everyone else is all lining up to buy stuff.

The crime rates have always been very low in japan. To be honest I've never felt as safe in a big city as I did while wandering the streets of tokyo at night. Was a nice contrast too because I went there directly from LA.

People like to say that Tokyonites are very cold but while I was there I was helped multiple times, sometimes by the people going completely out of their way. One time I was lost getting to a building and it was getting late so I asked someone on the street and told them the name of the place. They proceeded to find the phone number of the place using the internet and then called the place and asked for directions from where we were at the time.

I've asked people working at conbini (convenience stores) why they always smile and they always say, that's part of the job. Part of the job to be courteous, that's legit.

Just to clarify: Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world (yet having some of the harshest punishments for crimes).

Another thing that a lot of people seem be mistaken about is Japanese people being some kind of xenophobiacs. This is not true (for the most sense). Their main issue lies with Western societies trying to force their culture on to the Japanese people.

I apologize for going further with this. Just wanted to clarify.

the real crisis is and has always been the thousands of people displaced by the tsunami - getting food and survival supplies to them is reaching a critical point.

not to mention the thousands missing and potentially trapped in the debris. hope is diminishing for them with each passing hour with the cold weather. i pray for them.

It seems that today the situation at Fukushima 1 has not, to my understanding, deteriorated further today which is at least something. For every day that something really bad doesn't happen the chances of it happening get smaller.

It's just like Chernobyl. The UN nuclear watchdog said the mental health conditions surrounding the fear and paranoia was a bigger problem than the actual radiation itself.
They estimated 4,400 deaths from the worse Nuclear disaster ever.

This earthquake is estimated to have killed over 10,000. Why the hell everyone is talking about the dam powerstations when people are still trapped under rubble is just beyond me.
It's sensationalist bullshit.

The main difference is that with nuclear power you have a choice, with natural disasters you don't. You don't start driving without seatbelts or airbags only because a lot of people die of diabetes, do you?

Ugh, heard on the radio this morning.

"blah blah blah, radiation possible, not as simple as cooling the reactors, something something I didn't listen to or care about"

Freaking insane how everyone is all about the nuclear reactors (and wrong about them) when that was a pretty minor part of the puzzle.

Are you just basing that off news reports, or have you witnessed it first-hand? I haven't really been shopping at a grocery store since this happened so I haven't seen any stupid people over-exaggerating, but I'd love to XD
