Strathpine to Caboolture have been given Evacuation warnings, along with parts of West End, and some other inner city suburbs. The above map includes suburbs subject to potential flooding.
Estimations put the volume of water comming down the river on par with that of Sydney Harbour!!!
It's expected to break it's banks and reach a peak sometime between now and tommorow Lunchtime.
Major road closures and detours are prevelant throughout the city, everyone who lives in or around Brisbane, please stay safe, and listen to your radio for updates or evacuation orders.
soooooo much water.....

Edit again:
Just updated that the Weather department is predicting that this will be WORSE than the 74 floods, which killed a bunch of people. Stay safe everyone.
Yeh until Sunday I was in East Brisbane, about 5 mins from the Brisbane River and my house was literally in the bottom of a valley...
Thankfully my lease just ended and im temporarily back on the Gold Coast with my parents where its a lot safer from flooding...
Keep in mind, that with flooding in toowoomba above, the water level rose 3 meters in 10minutes so it can come up rapidly - keep your eyes/ears open and stay safe people still in Brisbane

Because the water came up over the carpark in less than a minute? It's called flash flooding for a reason. By the time most people found out the water would have gone already.
Stay safe guys, not sure about Melbourne but the regional areas in Victoria where I am at the moment it's pretty damn wet today. I'm born and bred in Toowoomba and grew up in Brisbane so I hope all is OK for all.
I live in Fairfield, Brisbane (affected area) and people are stocking up on Food/Supplies @ Coles. Apparently West End got completed owned this morning, the worst is still yet to come.
The dams are overflowing, the river is swelling, and the rain shows no sign of stopping. :S
Even the river by the CBD is starting to come up, I was in the restaurant of the hotel having lunch and hundreds of people are leaving their offices going home. Everyone is still fairly orderly, people just don't want to get stuck going home, quite a few roads are going to close down soon due to flooding.
I don't know much about Queensland, but apparently a few of the rivers here are going to rise to an all time record in the next 48 hours.

I doubt anyone here was even alive when this happened Last time, but in 1974 The Brisbane River broke it's banks, Flooded the crap out of everything and killed several people.
This time 8 people Confirmed dead around Toowoomba so far, 73 Missing.
That is the Indooroopilly Bridge after the 74 Floods. Ordinarily the water level is about 6 metres below that!
And I'm pretty sure the second one is KP after 74.
On January 11 2011 11:25 a176 wrote: I dont get why people dont move their cars?
People literally went in to do their shopping and when they come out the carpark is submerged. On the news it showed some footage where a guy was changing his tyres into 4WD (just turns the wheel nut) that took about 30 seconds, and by the time he sat in the front seat the water was almost up to the top of his tyres.
I live in Chinchilla, about 4 hours west of Brissy and that almost happened to my car. By the time we found out there was flooding it was brushing the bottom of my car, but thankfully I got it moved in time. It just felt like a solid wall of water falling out of the sky, in about 3 seconds flat in the rain you were saturated, I've never seen anything like it.
The worst part for us is that we only just finished cleaning up after the last flood 2 weeks ago! But no-where has had the flash flooding like Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley has. They were calling it an inland tsunami, and I reckon that description is almost spot on.
It's crazy, there's flooding from the top to bottom of Queensland, and getting worse.

Also, that's kinda BS, because we're not even at record flood heights yet anyway. Hopefully we just won't have any more lives lost.

Please have some respect? Especially seeing as you are from the UK. Go to a foreign country kill most of the indigenous population then claim it as property of the king. 200 years later laugh at what a place used to be called before the invasion.

Huh. Firstly, you know there are plenty of places in the UK that are named what they are because the Romans took their indigenous names and Latin-ified it. Secondly it was a joke.
Anyway, here I was with my bravado earlier thinking that since I live on a hill I'm fine. Little did I know that while on a hill, my car park is a local minima. Fortunately my nearby university has waved the second story parking fees and after de-shoeing and wading through a foot of water to evacuate my car, it is now safer from the flood water's than me.
And I'm having less trouble than 90% of people in the city due to local geography, so my thoughts are with everyone in QLD and around Australia who's suffering from the water.
I'm getting pretty nervous at the moment. I'm in a suburb thats not on the list, but any of the suburbs towards the river from me are aparantly going to get flooded. Hoping that the fact that i'm at the top of a hill will stop me having to evacuate. Getting worried tho, cant contact my parents.

good lucky everyone
Feeling much the same here. I'm not in immediate danger but I've been helping and hearing of multiple friends/family who have had to evacuate so far. The rain just literally isn't letting up, never seen the Brisbane river this vicious.
To give foreigners an understanding of how big the floods are, they cover an area the size of france and germany combined. There's a lot of water falling up northeast Australia.
I live right next door to the Brisbane river. I will post any photos I take of the rising river here. Get bottled fresh water and stock up on supplies if you already haven't!

Everythings mostly alright here in Melbourne so far. Been raining most of the day here though. QLD is completely insane at the moment from what I've been seeing on the news all day.

Ontario srsly has ZERO natural disaster. I remember back in grade 8, they said some hurricane MIGHT reach ontario and it just rained that day. The only natural disaster i evr went through was the time when it snowed a lot, then rained which caused everything to be slippery so the park became an ice rink but thats a boot it.

Same with British Columbia. I heard that if there was a Tsunami, it would hit Vancouver Island. And the unstable plates california has is near.. Nothing happened so far in Vancouver except a major flood which happened 10 years ago. lol up to my knees

Come join me, we can be stuck in the hotel emptying the mini bar together. Six more days until I fly out and see the sun again.
OK, maybe this is perfectly normal for australians, but every second I was watching those youtube vids all I could think was that those onlookers needed to get the fuck out of there. There are already 10 confirmed deaths, you'd think they'd exercise a little more caution.

Even if humans are having some sort of effect that's causing climate change it's pretty much impossible to pin the blame for any particular event on us. Who the fuck knows whether these floods would have happened without human activity on this planet?
I live walking distance from the river but luckily on higher ground. However many roads around my suburb are closed & flooded already. The peak is supposed to hit tomorrow through to Friday so it's going to get worse. Apparently the power will be going out soon too. =( Hope AFTER gsl. lol.

The deaths came from a freak "super storm" that emptied onto the side of a mountainous town basically making an inland tidal wave that crashed down into a valley. Thats not whats happening to brisbane, we're just getting rising flood waters, not quite as viscious but gonna cause a shitload of damage

Then, look at the big picture and pin the blame on the increased number of catastrophes and the increased temperature since the century we started disrupt the equilibrium of the carbon cycle. Looking at small incidents instead of trends is just ignorance.
I am actually in charge of the Premiers Donation Appeal website, (as such we are in charge of that website listed above - although our one did crash under the load, and some devs put up a bare bones one - which is the link above)
They had a telethon appeal on tv that was meant to last 2 hours on Sunday. It went for 3 and a half. Raised over 2 million through our application alone (and 6-8million for the night). That was prior to the toowoomba flash flood, and the flooding thats heading our way.
I'm stocked up on water and supplies (i live right in the city near the botanical gardens, near the river). Apparently i'm going to be cut off from leaving the apartment (i live on the 8th floor) for 3 days due to the floods! Electricity is being taken offline tomorrow morning at 7am as the substation will be flooded.
This could potentially be the biggest disaster and clean up bill in Australias history.
I'm safe, but others have lost everything. Gl to all.
It was quite the day (i live in caboolture and work @ west end brisbane) It took roughly 10 - 11hrs to make it out of the city back to my house once we got the message to GTFO of west end with flash flooding cutting all roads / transport back to my place and with brisbane river expecting to peak thursday my place of work is expecting take considerable flood dmg (right on the brisbane river)
All things considered i've come away without any major problems cept i'll be working from home for a little while!
definitely feel for those who have lost houses / vehicles / family
I have family in Brisbane but they live on the high ground fortunately... got an e-mail saying they were fine... but probably not going to work tomorrow.

lol! Yes. Yes we do. I grew up in the town that got flash flooded, and it's amazing how normal a name like Toowoomba can become when you live there. I've gone to visit other places like... I don't know... Giligulgul, for example, and gone "lol what a stupid name," and then actually thought about it and been like "...wait."
On topic, I'm on high ground in Brisbane, and it's kind of surreal right now. All of a sudden it's sunny and hot as anything. It makes some internal sense to freak out about a flood when it's raining like mad, but when it's sunny it's hard not to think "what's the big deal? It'll all dry up before it gets here, right?"
On January 12 2011 02:13 Antiproduct wrote: I don't care about Australia. They are countries that suffer far more yet people don't give a shit.
You decide what to care about based on what other people care or not care about? Just, wow.
No. I just care about countries that don't have the money or the means to help themselves. Australia has the money.
All the money in the world isn't going to reduce the death toll, show some sensitivity ffs.
Not good that it's sunny now, it means mosquitoes are going to be a huge problem especially if people are left without shelter. There have been some pretty horrific stories so far we can only hope that their prediction of higher waters later in the week don't eventuate.
So I've spent the whole morning on the telephone to friends and family. So far, the suburb where my friends and family live (Jindalee) is almost completely under water.
My parents house is gone...submerged all the way to the roof. My family managed to get out in time, and have spent the day in the boats getting neighbors and whatnot to higher ground.
1 of my school friends has already had his 2 story house go under. They got him and his family out in boats this morning.
Paddington is looking fine for now. Although we've been told to be prepared to leave. I went for a walk this morning to see how close to the river I could get. Got half way down Suncorp Stadium. (Castlemain Street)
Milton Rd, and Coro Av must be completely under water.
My thoughts are with everyone in Brisbane. Please stay safe! And keep your radio's on!
I'm curious if this is getting any coverage in other countries. On the one hand it's not at the scale of the flooding in the Philippines, or any of the huge natural disasters like Haiti in the last few years, but it's still pretty big. Some of the stuff that went through the Lockyer was just insane.
Also if anyone's associated with the uni in St Lucia, don't even try it.

Media in other countries usually briefly touch upon it for maybe 3 or 4 days, then forget about it. Anybody remember Pakistan flood last summer? That right, nobody talks about it anymore. Sometimes I wonder if all the water even receded. I presume same thing will happen to Australia. Once the rain stops and rebuilding, which is the toughest part, begins, people from other countries just go "Well, the worst is over, they'll rebuild themselves somehow sometime in the future." and just forget about it.
Most of the buildings are fine. All the sports fields have become oceans, and SFS drive is a second river, but the actual infrastructure is pretty high and dry - if really hard to get to. A couple wings of the colleges and the greenhouses/carparks behind IH are about all that's going under.

It's like one of the main stories up here dude. Seems like you got something of a Katrina situation going.
It's crazy that it's completely fine where I am, it's a lovely sunny day and people are chilling in the pool etc. Then about 100m away theres 50 foot wood and steel pontoons floating down the river smashing into bridges etc!
Luckily my family and friends are all ok, hardly anyone has power and several of them are completely isolated by swollen rivers but no-one is missing thank god. My sympathies go out to anyone who hasn't been so lucky ;(
Yo, I had a business trip to Brisbane on Jan 21, should I cancel it, will things be really screwed up still? I haven't spoken to them because of the flood, but I get on a flight to Melbourne in a couple of days...
like will the place be still really screwed up (I know it will be messed up still, but thoughts as to the extent of the damage..etc, that in like in a week things will be back to normal?)

Well Melbournes fine. Brisbane CBD is mostly fine - trains/subways are still running etc. It's the outer suburbs that were effected most as well as much further out towns of QLD. Some of the highways that were closed have started to reopen because the waters are receding.

Don't be a fool. This has nothing to do with climate change and it makes people who say so look like political opportunists.
Brisbane has a history of large floods coming once every twenty to thirty years or so. The last big one was in 1974. If anything we were overdue. We built a dam in 1985 to help mitigate the flooding but it cannot prevent big ones fully. Without it, this flood would likely have been the second largest on record, the largest being in 1893, which peaked at around 8m. This one hit 4.5m. The 1974 flood hit 5.4m.
The only thing that this has to do with climate change is that the Pacific Ocean changed from an El Nino event to a La Nina event. La Nina causes significant rainfall in Australia. El Nino causes droughts. This one happens to be a fairly strong La Nina event.
Enough talk about science and politics.
It was insane talking to people in Toowoomba and seeing the carnage caused by the flash floods. I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but the strangest thing about all of this is that Toowoomba is in a mountain range. When you drive there you spend about half an hour driving up steep roads before you hit the city. It was totally nuts seeing it all go under.
Where I was I managed to avoid getting flooded. The waters were within walking distance though and so I got a few photos. The devastation in this city is crazy though. I've had an enforced layoff for the last four days from my CBD job as a software engineer. We have only just had power restored at work and internet is still down. Transportation is really difficult all around the city.
So just finally got access to electricity and internet for the first time since tuesday, I managed to abuse the fact that it's low tide and most of the water has gone to get my car out of the second story garage (first was completely flooded) and dash to a relatives house.
This has been crazy, i watched the water rise metres so quickly, eventually the water was about head height in the middle of the street. The first floor of my apartment building is absolutely wrecked, the water getting so high that I was actually able to use a canoe we found and paddle through the front door. I have video of that so I might post it.
Anyway, I'm going to go eat some hot food and drink my first real cup of coffee in days :D
I wonder why Australia got a thread for its flooding troubles but NZ who is in the same situation as Aus and Brazil who have 500 dead from mudslides, do not :\
Probably because there's not as many kiwis on TL I guess.
There's been flooding in Victoria today as well as parts of Tasmania. Obviously nowhere near as bad as up north. It is amazing how widespread this rainfall has been.
