I was having a discussion with a friend of mine recently about blindness and I was wondering if there are any tests to prove that someone is blind.
There are obviously the simple "can you see this" type tests, but are there any full proof ways to check to see if someone is faking the blindness or something?
also semi related: does anyone have a link to the video of the blind guy playing starcraft?

Who knows, maybe use a light on the individual to see if his pupils dilate or something...? Anyways, there's varying degrees of being blind, some could have partial vision and still be considered legally blind.

Well.. actually.. dunno. What I would do is put the subject into a room with nothing but a muted TV with interesting action movies, and let the person be there for 12 hours under vision of a hidden camera. I think any faker would glance at the tv out of boredness.. (Stupid idea, I know)

A person can be blind and still have his eyes react to light etc. Oftentimes the problem lies in the connection between the eye and the brain, not the eye itself so the eye still functions normally.
What you could do is tape his eyelids open and direct some really strong light into the eyes, if he is not blind he will try to get away from the light after a while since it will hurt. Just a guess though.

I don't think there are many mysteries about the eye anymore. They can check your optic nerve quite easily and determine whether or not your eyes are functioning. We may not have the answers to fix many things but they can definitely tell if you are full of shit

yeah, couldn't you just like, shine a bright flashlight into their face and see whether or not they react to it? seems easy enough

why would someone fake being blind o-o

Show them a naked picture of rosie o'donnell and if they don't react...they are blind...if they aren't...they will probably become blind.

stick your finger really close to their eye
99.9% of people will not be able to have no reaction to that, they will flinch or something

Just figured I'd share that and give you the willies:p

Some causes can be tested for, some cannot.

doctors spin something like this: + Show Spoiler +
if the patient's eyes focus on the middle, they're not blind. supposedly, it's impossible not to focus on the middle. that's how i understand it, anyway. i could be wrong.

You could just punch them in the face. If they are blind, you apologize and say you fell into them. If they aren't blind, then they will most likely flinch or get out of the way.

I think the heat will be uncomfortable regardless of if you can see or not.

I don't think you have to be able to see to react to it. Hmm, I'm actually wondering this too. I'm not too sure on the details of blindness, but if you shine a bright flashlight into someone's eyes their iris shrinks to accept less light and vice versa for darkness. Would blind people's eyes not react the same way?
