So, fanfiction.net(FF.net) is a widely used site where people update fan fiction for the rest of the world to see, love, and review.
Now, what IS fan fiction? Fan fiction is a broadly-defined term for fan labor regarding stories about characters (or simply fictional characters) or settings written by fans of the original work, rather than by the original creator. Works of fan fiction are rarely commissioned or authorized by the original work's owner, creator, or publisher; also, they are almost never professionally published.
FF.net has over 2 million accounts and stories under multiple categories, including Anime, Books, Comics, TV Shows, and Games. Yes, this also includes a Starcraft section. In an update that happened within the past 2 years, FF.net also includes a new section; the crossovers. This section has all of the previous categories, but hosts exactly what it sounds like; fan fictions that contain the characters of two stories.

I enjoyed this site a long ways back... read a bunch of fanfics on anime I had just seen, and even wrote a few chapters of my own stuff. Then lost the urge and never went back...

I used to publish there. The idea of sharing your work etc etc is great, but don't expect to get any kind of useful feeback in your reviews. I was really pleased at first to see all the great reviews I was getting, but then I read some other people's stuff, which was really horrible, like, barely english horrible, which was also getting rave reviews, and I suddenly felt really cheap

I enjoyed reading this stuff when I was 13. I read a lot of DBZ, Pokemon, Mario, Yu Yu Hakusho fanfics and stuff.
There is some hilariously awful shit there.

My TF2 group regularly reads and ridicules stories from fanfiction.net and other such sites. As tnkted said, "My Immortal" is great (in the sense that it is horrible). One player spent 4-5 hours reading it to the server.

It's not exactly on topic, but does anyone remember that cool (french?) DB manga where they publish 2 sites a week or something. Always thought it was pretty good but I forgot the url :/

I think I've seen worse, however I'm not motivated to sift through all of the stories to find something terrible xD
Most of the stories are fun to look at, but eventually you get terribly bored due to lack of plotline, however, I hear some are actually decent ( Though I have not read any ).

You mean the best Harry Potter fanfic! "My Immortal" is something of a legend with HP fanfic readers. So goffik.
Most of the stuff on ff.net is horrid, but there are a few gems to be found as well. In my experience, the best fanfic can be found on the more fandom-specific communities on Livejournal.
(I might be invoking the wrath of the internet gods here by mentioning this, but has anyone here ever heard of that LotR fanfic, "Celebrian"? Scarred for life.)

Oh shit this site is awesome. Mature filter -> humor -> whatever book, makes a fucking awesome set of fan fics pull up. Going through a few harry potter ones since that has been mentioned a bunch here.

Definitely a lot of crazy stuff on FF.net, but there are a few hidden gems. I've spent time browsing before when I'm bored. :/

I am frequent fanfiction,net visitor because I just love fanfictions (both writing and reading them, though I never seem to have enough time & commitment to finish even one chapter). Most of the things there are hilariously awful - and I never got seeming prevalence of yaoi stories I avoid like plague - but given enough effort you DO manage to find some jewels among the turds.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I somehow have prejudice against OC-based stories, and I know it isn't fair since there are few exceptional fan-fictions that utilize OC well as main protagonist, but seriously, who can blame me for having OC-phobia?
Edit2: OH OH Also you know the chance of story being good decreases by 200% if the summary contains word "sequel".
