So, fanfiction.net(FF.net) is a widely used site where people update fan fiction for the rest of the world to see, love, and review.
Now, what IS fan fiction? Fan fiction is a broadly-defined term for fan labor regarding stories about characters (or simply fictional characters) or settings written by fans of the original work, rather than by the original creator. Works of fan fiction are rarely commissioned or authorized by the original work's owner, creator, or publisher; also, they are almost never professionally published.
FF.net has over 2 million accounts and stories under multiple categories, including Anime, Books, Comics, TV Shows, and Games. Yes, this also includes a Starcraft section. In an update that happened within the past 2 years, FF.net also includes a new section; the crossovers. This section has all of the previous categories, but hosts exactly what it sounds like; fan fictions that contain the characters of two stories.

I enjoyed this site a long ways back... read a bunch of fanfics on anime I had just seen, and even wrote a few chapters of my own stuff. Then lost the urge and never went back...

I used to publish there. The idea of sharing your work etc etc is great, but don't expect to get any kind of useful feeback in your reviews. I was really pleased at first to see all the great reviews I was getting, but then I read some other people's stuff, which was really horrible, like, barely english horrible, which was also getting rave reviews, and I suddenly felt really cheap

My TF2 group regularly reads and ridicules stories from fanfiction.net and other such sites. As tnkted said, "My Immortal" is great (in the sense that it is horrible). One player spent 4-5 hours reading it to the server.

Most of the stories are fun to look at, but eventually you get terribly bored due to lack of plotline, however, I hear some are actually decent ( Though I have not read any ).

You mean the best Harry Potter fanfic! "My Immortal" is something of a legend with HP fanfic readers. So goffik.
Most of the stuff on ff.net is horrid, but there are a few gems to be found as well. In my experience, the best fanfic can be found on the more fandom-specific communities on Livejournal.
(I might be invoking the wrath of the internet gods here by mentioning this, but has anyone here ever heard of that LotR fanfic, "Celebrian"? Scarred for life.)

I am frequent fanfiction,net visitor because I just love fanfictions (both writing and reading them, though I never seem to have enough time & commitment to finish even one chapter). Most of the things there are hilariously awful - and I never got seeming prevalence of yaoi stories I avoid like plague - but given enough effort you DO manage to find some jewels among the turds.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I somehow have prejudice against OC-based stories, and I know it isn't fair since there are few exceptional fan-fictions that utilize OC well as main protagonist, but seriously, who can blame me for having OC-phobia?
Edit2: OH OH Also you know the chance of story being good decreases by 200% if the summary contains word "sequel".

Try http://www.fanfiction.net/book/# and you'll notice that Harry Potter has over 489,000 stories, as opposed to the 10,000 crossovers.
To find 'good' stuff, the best bet is to search for communities and base it on subscriber count, otherwise. But be warned, if you're looking for a good story, quite literally 99% of all given stories will be crap

Basic way of filtering out generic crap with little effort
Length filter: >60,000 or >100,000
Turing off age rating only for the brave-hearted though it does also remove most of the hidden jewels.
Look at the summary/main character tab and immediately ignore fictions with following words: "OC", "sequel", [Random word]![Character] ex. Idiot!Harry (only for the Harry Potter section, other popular sections have their own stupid classification system for the consumption of masses), male parings. Finally use basic common sense (poor, not grammatical, and casual summaries should be immediate tip-off).
Things to look for: Chapter/Word proportion (more words per chapter, generally the better), my personal experience is that good stories generally tend to have less reviews than generic crap ones.
When you find an actually good writer, going to their author's page and searching through their favourite section is also decent idea though such method does not frequently work.

Usually the longer ones are better. I tend to just put the word minimum to 40,000 and then read the first chapter. If I like it, I bookmark it and read it when I'm bored. If it's less than 5,000 words, it's most likely horrible.

Chapters with 3 - 4K words aren't that bad.
On top of that, there are fanfictions that have around 20K only because they've only had a few chapters. I think you miss a few because of that.....

I have a love hate relationship with this website.
I love when I find a good story to read, things like The Sun Soul ( fucking awesome Pokemon story) and various Harry Potter stories that make Harry not a pussy are enjoyable to read. It's a decent place to go if you're dissatisfied with a story and want something else to happen in it...especially concerning Harry Potter, sometimes it's nice to simply forget the terrible epilogue.
Unfortunately like everything else in the world the quality leans heavily toward the shitfest end of the scale and 90% of the stories there are wrist slashing( as in literal) with boy on boy love. Out of the 487k HP stories there are maybe...250 worth reading, if even. The amount of people that can't grasp high school level grammar or spelling is jaw dropping.
Seriously though read The Sun Soul, it's incredible. This story alone makes FFN worth muddling through all the crap, becase gems like it exist.

A better way to search is like this.
Minimum word at least 10k if not 20k.
Read the summary. Red flag words are "What if?", "I'm not good at writing summaries", "First fic, don't be rough on me please". Generally if they can't write a good summary they don't stand a chance at writing a good story.
Chapters that are at least 3,5k per are best for quality. This number can be generally as low as 2k but anything lower means that you can't actually get any information out before the end of the chapter...IE it's shit.
A good 70% of the stories that pass these tests are going to be a decent quality....too bad very very few of them pass even these very minor requirements.

FF7 genius. I still can't believe I remember his name from like 13 years ago. One of the few "books" i've read completely. And this is coming from me, a guy who can probably count the number of books I've read 100% through. In other words, not that many.
He has a whole 8 book series of true epicness with incredible dialogue and diction. Good humor thrown in as well. In fact, now that this thread has been made, I'll probably re-read the series very soon. And throughout his site, he has a bunch of one-shots that are simply dazzling.
Please do yourself a favor and read this phenomenal writer.

ah I remember reading some Harry Potter fan fiction 10 years ago. There were 2 full length fanfics I read (which replaced the fifth and sixth books) which in my opinion back then was better then the real ones.
I also remember when the 7th real HP book was leaked a week early with someone taking a photograph of every page. The fanfic community got together and transcribed the whole book from the photos 3 days before release. Everyone was commenting how it's definitely fake due to the poor writing and boring story (why are they in the woods for so long?). Nope, turns out it was real.
