Well, AKIRA is not cyberpunk. Even Otomo stated that in a interview, about how sad he was that the history was marketed that

Labels apart, AKIRA is a must see.

No one mentioned A Scanner Darkly? Love that movie. Philip K. Dick stories/novels just transition very easily to movies IMO, and they're all fairly enjoyable.

Also if you watch/don't mind anime Texhnolyze is highly recommended.

Except for the fact that in most cases directors/screenwriters fail to grasp what the books are about (vide Next) or use wrong tools to show it - wrong actor choices, unfortunate scenery choices etc. etc. (vide Paycheck) and the original message is twisted or lost completely.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

I guess I would agree with Next, haven't seen Paycheck thought.

But Blade Runner, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly I liked.

What there is to know about Paycheck: starring Ben Affleck, directed by John Woo. Not a combo for PKD in my opinion.

Blade Runner is one of the best movies ever, regardless of genre. Minority Report was ok and I didn't really like the visual formula they used in A Scanner Darkly so I won't say anything about it.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

If you can get into manga, blame! is an amazing cyberpunk read.

(manga is often underrated as a form of media, a lot of the more sophisticated series have a lot of quality in them)

Hah, Domonic-- "Neuromancer" has also been my favorite book for many years. I wish I was as good a writer as Gibson.

It's infinitely amusing to me that Gibson vaulted the use of the word "matrix" and invented the term "cyberspace," as well as the fact that he was hilariously immortalized in the later phrase "hack the gibson"

For a while I debated what I should do with my 250th post, but posting about William Gibson makes me happy enough that I don't care! Thanks for this thread. Even though I have seen many of the suggestions already, some of them I haven't, and I want to make sure that I do.

Sorry! but everything I would have suggested is here already, I think. I guess, Domonic, if you liked Neuromancer, I can also suggest Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive, since I've read both. I don't know if you realized they're an interrelated trilogy.

I think my best friend liked Virtual Light? but I'm not sure. My same friend also liked GitS Stand Alone Complex a lot, and the original movie and its source manga both come highly recommended. I even tend to shy away from Japanese stuff just because of the otaku fanbase, but I'll make exceptions in this case.

This is archetypal cyberpunk (meaning it's probably exactly what you are looking for, but at the same time that it doesn't have the most original story elements), and the main draw is how well it creates a unique visual experience that goes hand in hand with that feel.

All the films listed so far are between decent and great, but this one...it just sucks. It sucks badly. The story is simplistic, the characters are transparent (specially the hero), the dialogues seem to have been written by me when I was 11, the visuals get boring really fast (GITS' ones are WAY better), the final twist leaves no room for any interpretation, it is just a lame moral shit that is SO expected...and the thing is it's French, I'd like to defend it in any way but I fucking can't.

It's a matter of what you are looking for in a movie. I didn't have a problem with the dialogue, it's functional, same as the story, and the themes are basically the constant themes of cyberpunk, questioning the interaction of freedom and technological advance in the type of world we live in (corporation dominated and such) and the underworld vs. glossy upper world dynamic. Don't see what was more or less moral than others, sure it has a closed ending rather than open, but it doesn't close it off to disagreement, it doesn't imply or say that if you disagree with the character(s) you are wrong.

The key is that the focus isn't on making a super intricate story with witty and memorable dialogue, it's to put you into a certain state, like make the viewer feel like he's experiencing the cyberpunk world, and the visuals are a technique used to enhance that. It's effective for some people and ineffective for others like you, but you have to go into it with the right mindset and judge it by the right criteria or you'll never like it.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion man

kinda offtopic but still blame! is indeed a masterpiece, highly recommended. Would love to see a proper anime. Actually all Nihei's works are great cyberpunk stories.

about movies, most important works have already mentioned, of course Blade Runner is at the very top of the list, tho i'm not a great fan of "Ghost in the Shell", instead i prefer "Serial Experiments Lain" and "Texhnolyze".

Maybe not exactly 'cyberpunk' but ExistenZ is an awesome movie. It does the 'reality-inside-reality' thing in a far more interesting way than both The Matrix and Inception IMO (not that they were bad movies).

Oh and this Polish-Japanese movie Avalon. Almost nobody knows of it but it's amazing/

This isn't really cyberpunk, but Metropolis is one of the oldest science fiction movies and is considered by many to be one of the most important.

Of mentioned, my favorite are Blade Runner (of course) 12 Monkeys and Brazil.

You should also check out the phenomenal manga Eden: It's an Endless World.

Metropolis has had great influences on the science fiction genre, or even just movie making in general. I'd say this movie is one of the milestones in movie history and you should watch it if you're interested in the art and history of movie making. If you're looking for a fun sci-fi movie to watch don't watch it because it's going to be like playing pong on your pc.
It has a strong technique, but it lacks oo.

Oh, I'm glad you posted that, it reminds me! Metropolis was sort-of remade as an anime. Probably not for everyone, but I enjoyed it (yes I have also seen the original black & white silent movie Metropolis). It definitely deals with the subject matter of this thread e.g. artificial intelligence, and what all the renegades are up to in a future cityscape.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolis_(2001_film)

I'm glad I had a suggestion for this thread after all : D
