My favorite book is Neuromancer, and after much excitement of the upcoming movie that should be coming in 2011, I realized I haven't seen much movies of this genre.

What are your favorites including foreign films?

Gilliam has done a lot of good cyberpunk. 12 Monkeys, Brazil, even the Fifth Element. Anytime something Philip K. Dick wrote gets turned into a movie it's inevitably at least worth a watch (Blade Runner, Minority Report, etc). Repo Men was a pretty good movie too.

Not nearly enough people have seen Dark City. If I had to suggest just one, that would be it.

Not cyberpunk, more of a space opera.

Renaissance.
This is archetypal cyberpunk (meaning it's probably exactly what you are looking for, but at the same time that it doesn't have the most original story elements), and the main draw is how well it creates a unique visual experience that goes hand in hand with that feel.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion man

From the most to least CP:

Bladerunner
Ghost in the Shell
Akira
Johnny Mnemonic
Mad Max
12 Monkeys
Minority Report
Dark City

All good movies. (Minority Report is probably the worst of them all)

Try "Strange days"

More dystopian than cyberpunk, but still worth to watch:
Escape from NY
Escape from LA
Tank girl

And if you love neuromancer you will love the HL2 mod Dystopia. The mod is based on the novels. So you got the whole ICE/cyberspace stuff, you got camouflage suits and so on.

For the guy who recommended NeoTokyo, there is also a HL2 mod called NeoTokyo. Great graphics, set in future japan.

Oh, and don't forget about the all-time classic: Total Recall.

Might have missed some. Here's a nice list of (almost) all cyberpunk movies:

Good list, I've enjoyed all these movies except Dark City (didn't like) and Johnny Mnemonic (haven't seen).
Reminds me I need to rewatch Blade Runner.

Edit: Total Recall is a must.

I'd say the fifth element, that movie kicks total and complete ass. Though I'm not sure if its 100% cyberpunk but it does have a lot of the themes and styles in it.

WTF is with the lack of The Matrix in this thread? Not only easily the greatest cyberpunk movie of all time, but one of the best overall movies ever. Obviously only the original though. Let's not talk about the others please.

Yea, Mad Max is post apoc, which is an entire genre in itself.

The anime series AD Police is pretty awesome, and Battle Angel Alita's pretty cool, although it's more of a mesh of cyberpunk and post apoc than pure cyberpunk.

Edit: Really, cyberpunk dated 1980 is a theme that hasn't really been explored enough through modern media, I feel, and that's a shame. It's an amazing setting.

Also, I feel kind of bad suggesting animes for cyberpunk quality since there's so much horrible pseudo-cyberpunk (which is simply just overeffectualized scific) which can easilly turn you off the entire genre, but then again, there's not much live-action cyberpunk movies either, so you take what you can get.

Well, AKIRA is not cyberpunk. Even Otomo stated that in a interview, about how sad he was that the history was marketed that

Labels apart, AKIRA is a must see.

No one mentioned A Scanner Darkly? Love that movie. Philip K. Dick stories/novels just transition very easily to movies IMO, and they're all fairly enjoyable.

Also if you watch/don't mind anime Texhnolyze is highly recommended.

Except for the fact that in most cases directors/screenwriters fail to grasp what the books are about (vide Next) or use wrong tools to show it - wrong actor choices, unfortunate scenery choices etc. etc. (vide Paycheck) and the original message is twisted or lost completely.

I guess I would agree with Next, haven't seen Paycheck thought.

But Blade Runner, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly I liked.

What there is to know about Paycheck: starring Ben Affleck, directed by John Woo. Not a combo for PKD in my opinion.

Blade Runner is one of the best movies ever, regardless of genre. Minority Report was ok and I didn't really like the visual formula they used in A Scanner Darkly so I won't say anything about it.

If you can get into manga, blame! is an amazing cyberpunk read.

(manga is often underrated as a form of media, a lot of the more sophisticated series have a lot of quality in them)

Hah, Domonic-- "Neuromancer" has also been my favorite book for many years. I wish I was as good a writer as Gibson.

It's infinitely amusing to me that Gibson vaulted the use of the word "matrix" and invented the term "cyberspace," as well as the fact that he was hilariously immortalized in the later phrase "hack the gibson"

For a while I debated what I should do with my 250th post, but posting about William Gibson makes me happy enough that I don't care! Thanks for this thread. Even though I have seen many of the suggestions already, some of them I haven't, and I want to make sure that I do.

Sorry! but everything I would have suggested is here already, I think. I guess, Domonic, if you liked Neuromancer, I can also suggest Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive, since I've read both. I don't know if you realized they're an interrelated trilogy.

I think my best friend liked Virtual Light? but I'm not sure. My same friend also liked GitS Stand Alone Complex a lot, and the original movie and its source manga both come highly recommended. I even tend to shy away from Japanese stuff just because of the otaku fanbase, but I'll make exceptions in this case.

It's a matter of what you are looking for in a movie. I didn't have a problem with the dialogue, it's functional, same as the story, and the themes are basically the constant themes of cyberpunk, questioning the interaction of freedom and technological advance in the type of world we live in (corporation dominated and such) and the underworld vs. glossy upper world dynamic. Don't see what was more or less moral than others, sure it has a closed ending rather than open, but it doesn't close it off to disagreement, it doesn't imply or say that if you disagree with the character(s) you are wrong.

The key is that the focus isn't on making a super intricate story with witty and memorable dialogue, it's to put you into a certain state, like make the viewer feel like he's experiencing the cyberpunk world, and the visuals are a technique used to enhance that. It's effective for some people and ineffective for others like you, but you have to go into it with the right mindset and judge it by the right criteria or you'll never like it.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion man

kinda offtopic but still blame! is indeed a masterpiece, highly recommended. Would love to see a proper anime. Actually all Nihei's works are great cyberpunk stories.

about movies, most important works have already mentioned, of course Blade Runner is at the very top of the list, tho i'm not a great fan of "Ghost in the Shell", instead i prefer "Serial Experiments Lain" and "Texhnolyze".

Maybe not exactly 'cyberpunk' but ExistenZ is an awesome movie. It does the 'reality-inside-reality' thing in a far more interesting way than both The Matrix and Inception IMO (not that they were bad movies).

Oh and this Polish-Japanese movie Avalon. Almost nobody knows of it but it's amazing/

This isn't really cyberpunk, but Metropolis is one of the oldest science fiction movies and is considered by many to be one of the most important.

Of mentioned, my favorite are Blade Runner (of course) 12 Monkeys and Brazil.

You should also check out the phenomenal manga Eden: It's an Endless World.

Metropolis has had great influences on the science fiction genre, or even just movie making in general. I'd say this movie is one of the milestones in movie history and you should watch it if you're interested in the art and history of movie making. If you're looking for a fun sci-fi movie to watch don't watch it because it's going to be like playing pong on your pc.
It has a strong technique, but it lacks oo.

Oh, I'm glad you posted that, it reminds me! Metropolis was sort-of remade as an anime. Probably not for everyone, but I enjoyed it (yes I have also seen the original black & white silent movie Metropolis). It definitely deals with the subject matter of this thread e.g. artificial intelligence, and what all the renegades are up to in a future cityscape.

I'm glad I had a suggestion for this thread after all : D

Repo is one of the worst movies made, I was so mad I wasted $7's to see that shit, then a bunch of fat goth kids gave it a standing ovation. Rage

Robocops definitely one of my favorites

I know Cowboy Bebop isn't very cyberpunk but I think it's awesome and sci-fi enough to get a mention :D

Other then that Blade Runner is simply epic

Ghost in the Shell is undoubtedly one of the best cyberpunk movies. The Stand Alone Complex series is possibly even better as a work of science fiction.

Blade Runner is also great, but truth be told, sci-fi in general (and cyberpunk in particular) is pretty poorly represented in most mainstream film+tv media. What with prospective Hollywood adaptations like Neuromancer, Forever War, Battle Angel Alita, GitS, etc. etc. that'll hopefully change for the better. Wait, who am I kidding?

If you liked Neuromancer, definitely check out Snow Crash, and with a more modern flavour, Rainbows End.

This is archetypal cyberpunk (meaning it's probably exactly what you are looking for, but at the same time that it doesn't have the most original story elements), and the main draw is how well it creates a unique visual experience that goes hand in hand with that feel.

All the films listed so far are between decent and great, but this one...it just sucks. It sucks badly. The story is simplistic, the characters are transparent (specially the hero), the dialogues seem to have been written by me when I was 11, the visuals get boring really fast (GITS' ones are WAY better), the final twist leaves no room for any interpretation, it is just a lame moral shit that is SO expected...and the thing is it's French, I'd like to defend it in any way but I fucking can't.

Hehe, reading this from a frenchman made me giggle

Just watched War Games again because of this thread - Not at all as impressive as I remember it - But it raises a relevant discussion.

EDIT -

Oh, and btw - I am not really 100% sharp on what exactly defines a Cyperpunk movie - Gathering from what I've seen so far, I would like to throw in the Firefly serie.

Unfortunately, it not a big succes and was canceled after only 1 season (Plus the movie, Serenity).

If you like the Starcraft-theme of cowboys/rednecks in space, that serie is definetly one for you

i think most of the must watch stuff got mentioned, tho i find it funny that no one mentioned the matrix, sure the trilogy sucked but the first movie by itself is pretty good.

Oh! and Blame is supposed to be getting a movie!

And how about Armitage III?
Also, Gamer was pretty good when we're talking about recent stuff.

Still no one mentioned Equilibrium?

Still no one mentioned Equilibrium?

But is it cyberpunk?
If we're including this, toss in 1984 too.

Equilibrium isn't cyberpunk it's 1984 vs the matrix in film format.

A Scanner Darkly/Dark City are probably the best films, but for "got me into the whole thing", Akira/GITS.

Still love the original GITS movie, so good for it's time.

hands down the best; the first too for dome if you don't count metropolis; bladerunner did more for the cyberpunk genre than any other.. my personal favorite will always be THX-1138 but arguably some will consider include it pre-cyberpunk

wtf, not even one mention of the Tetsuo series?

if you haven't seen it before, its an extremely dark (think David Lynch multiply by 10), cyberpunk japanese movies, its pretty disturbing at times but a pretty good film imo..
