There are specific setups to be eligible for a 'free tier'. I've had to change my DB instance for example. So far I've been successfully hosting a website for 6 months without paying a dime.

Hi, I have just seen the email that you sent me saying that you charged me $76. I have no idea why you have charged me this. I used your amazon cloud storage thing for 1 afternoon several months ago to see what it was and if I could use it for a project. There was absolutely ZERO indication anywhere that I would be charged any sort of fee for doing this. Two months later I see a bill for $76 and don't even know how to cancel this because I have no clue why it is there in the first place. I am NOT a technical person, all I done was upload a project and a file and see if it would run one day. I have no idea what this dashboard screen means when it says I am running "1 instance, 1 volume, 1 load balancer and 3 security groups". I have never seen this dashboard screen before in my life. Please delete whatever this is and refund my money. Looking at the Billing & Cost Management Dashboard it says I am "spent" $10 last month and am forecast another $46 this month. This is completely insane. Please remove the account and refund. I cannot afford $76 to be taken without my consent.

So you didn't read the user guide for a service you know can cost money and then clicked random buttons and did random stuff for a while, and are now surprised that some of the buttons you clicked on cost money. Most of the things you do on Amazon come with quite clear warnings that they cost money. You have a limited bandwidth and couple of environments that are free. Anything else and their ticker starts ticking. They also don't just take your site down if you don't tell them to, so if you chose some unusual configuration that charges X per month, you will pay X per month even if you get 0 traffic on it. And yes, everything is clearly marked with the charge model that the service uses (per X calls, per X time period, per X megabytes transferred, or stored, are the usual models), and in my experience not only is it clearly marked, but you get a popup dialog that asks you to confirm that you are requesting the service. The only one that can cause unforeseen costs is the bandwidth usage, but that is clearly stated in the initial agreement you okay to in order to use the service at all. I remember you were playing around with an anime database. I find it very hard to believe that your total usage was two times 50kb, which is smaller than even a single decent-sized image usually is nowadays.

1) click on Elastic Beanstalk hub link and it takes you to this page + Show Spoiler + 2) select a server type and click launch + Show Spoiler + 3) wait a while then upload your application which is like 2mb in size and doesn't really do anything and has 1 user which used it for like 2 hours max 2 months ago + Show Spoiler + 4) go to the Bucket hub link and either see your uploaded ap there or upload it there (shows three instances of 2.7 mb currently, within one of those folders) + Show Spoiler + 5) get charged $76 two months later with a $10 bonus charge and $40 forecast charge 6) wonder where it says that you need to pay for anything

Edit: yup, extremely easy. Log in and just go to your billing and costs overview. Then your current bill. If that is insufficiently detailed, you can open Costs Explorer to figure out exactly what you spent money on.

Just did that and saw my costs went up to $0.03 because of transfer. Edit: Also, how the hell did you get t1.micro? I thought that free tier EC2 instances start at t2. And why the hell would you need load balancers for your small app?

Probably what you did when switching servers was, instead of actually switching servers, got some magic load balancing service to do magic for you, balancing your (nonexistent) load between Ireland and the US. This is probably not included in the free service (I don't see any reason why it should be: your application is quite serious by the time it needs this kind of load balancing). Contact Amazon support, explain (politely, and in a less inflammatory way than most of your posts here) what you were trying to do, how something must have gone wrong, and ask them to fix it. Generally their customer support is pretty good, but I haven't dealt with billing, so it might be different.

I'm not sure you're eligible for a refund if you say something along the lines of "I created an account, clicked some random stuff without checking what it does and now I get charged for leaving it like that for 2 months". Lesson to be learned here: Don't set up servers yourself if you don't know what you're doing or are willing to pay the price of errors. Servers are complicated things, not something every person can set up properly (even with wizards). For example, I'm sure that when I was setting up stuff over at Amazon AWS it has clearly (maybe not so clearly, but it did none the less) shown me if my desired EC2 and RDS instances were eligible for a free tier. The first time I set them up they weren't so I made sure to change them and set them up accordingly before launching said instances.

Is there an obvious solution for this? Can I access the information in the input function from the other thread? Or perhaps copy the current console line and then kill the input thread?

I guess that input polling is what you're looking for here. This might also be useful (especially the last sentence).

I'm looking for a front-end/(UI?) framework for mobile apps that will let me make nice looking apps with responsive UI. I've been looking at PhoneGap and came across Polymer (with its paper elements) which looked like just what I needed, except that I can't get any app to work on Phonegap Build, not to mention that being fairly recent there's not a lot of documentation and help for a noob like me. Which framework would you recommend for someone who only really wants to make an app with a good looking header, some buttons, some sliders and not much else? There seem to be so many nowadays that I don't really know where to start.

Which framework would you recommend for someone who only really wants to make an app with a good looking header, some buttons, some sliders and not much else? There seem to be so many nowadays that I don't really know where to start. You don't really need a big framework for that. If all you want is a simple app that's looking pretty you need not look any further than Bootstrap and jQuery. Both of those tools provide you with a nice set of css and js tools to really tweak out any front-end part of a mobile/web app. The best thing is that you can also customize them to better suit your needs (like including only the parts of Bootstrap that you're actually using to make it more lightweight - not that it's heavy in any way, it just comes with many tools that you might not necessarily need). Just a brief overview of them: Bootstrap Has all the css and js necessary to make a modern, good looking, responsive app. You get css classes to easily build your scaffolding, predefined buttons, typography and other nice things like that. You can also enable nice js things in it really easily. Stuff like modal windows, popover/under tooltips etc. take minutes to add to your app. jQuery It's basically a big library with wrappers for regular JS so that you don't have to worry about browser compatibility. It also adds a lot of nice functionality and simplifies a lot of things. Totally compatible with Bootstrap (I think that some parts of Bootstrap might actually require jQuery). Both of them are also pretty much industry standard so there's ton of help, guides and documentation readily available. Just head over to the examples section and see if you like it.

I guess that input polling is what you're looking for here. This might also be useful (especially the last sentence). Adding a bit to this - Python has a few libraries for async/coroutine IO. Twisted (I've used a bit), Tornado, asyncio, gevent? Anyway, can't speak to others but I liked working with Twisted - might help you on the "server" part of your chat app. I'd write some small code for you but Windows 10 and VirtualBox aren't playing nice with my VMs for now but you can see lots of sample Twisted code (there's some for reading stdin, you can see how they implement LineProtocol and modify that as you need). edit: nm, I can look into this more myself. + Show Spoiler + Any suggestions on how to make Python code run faster on Windows? I downloaded Anaconda (scipy distro) and am running some code to cluster data points but I have 2500 datapoints to cluster and clustering 100 is taking minutes so I can't really deal with this. I hoped Anaconda out of box would have some stuff to run on GPU but maybe I need to integrate PyPy or something??? On clustering note - is there a good way to do clustering like kmeans without knowing k in advance? Finally - sorry if anything here is glaringly wrong, it's the culmination of a few hours of googling mostlyso thanks in advance! Also since it's been floating around in head - On a single core processor is there any advantage to multithreading over coroutines?
