Don't know how authentic it would be in America, but my two favorite dishes are Pad Thai and Panang Curry. And if she had the time, you couldn't go wrong with Tom Yum soup on the side.

Just pulled random images off Google, but they're all pretty close to what I'd expect the dish to look like here.

Edit: I definitely missed the "who have been there" part of your post. So you may want to discredit mine.

Stereotypical Thai stuff:

Pad Thai XD

http://fanclub.redelvises.net/0903/chickpadthai.jpg

Basically, to make it taste "better", or more "thai", continually double the amount of green pepper spices until utterly unbearable
the throws never bothered me anyway

When I eat Pad Thai, I generally prefer it to be milder than I'd normally order most dishes. IT usually has a nice sweetness to it. Maybe add a bit of chili sauce to flavor up blander dishes, or if I really need the heat. Curry on the other hand is one of the dishes I'll order as hot as possible.

I'm a big fan of red pineapple curry with pork and green bell peppers. Pad Thai is obviously good, too.

I fucking love Thai food. IMO, it's a toss up between Thai and Indian for best food on the Asian Continent planet.

Thus I've created a list of my favorite dishes in no particular order:

(1) Tom Kha Soup
[image loading]

(2) Green Papaya Salad
[image loading]

(3) Massaman Curry

It's a super delicious, spicy sweet soup traditionally with coconut milk, galangal, chiles, lemon grass, and chicken or shrimp.

It's even better when you add mushrooms and a few other ingredients.

Speaking in a more general way about the flavor profile of Thai food it usually has the spicy counterbalanced with sweet notes. For example most curry recipes call for either a sweet vegetable or just straight up cane sugar to be added to the curry paste, meat and coconut milk. Tamarind paste is also a very thai way of introducing sweetness into dishes. By the way for anyone who is sort of rolling their eyes and saying that northern thai food is more salty and less spicy in flavor, yes i know but for sake of brevity (and since northern thai food is all but impossible to find in the USA) i will restrict my advice to southern dishes that are more staples of what americans think of thai food.

That being said about flavors a traditional thai meal (a reasonably formal one at least) usually consists of a side dish of rice, and a selection of cooking techniques and seasonings, usually a stir-fry, a curry, and a soup. There is a a great deal of importance placed on not repeating seasonings or techniques as this is seen as uncreative. So my sample thai menu might look as follows:

Green mango salad
Snake gourd, egg, and crab soup.
green curry with beef and baby corn.
Stir-fried green and yellow beans with garlic and chilies
steamed rice (of course)

Oh man. I love thai food. I'd say...

Sa tay chicken, which probably wouldn't be too difficult to make.

Pad thai or massaman curry would be great as well, as stated by previous posters, or thai yellow curry.

There was also this thai spicy spagetti I had at one place, that I never really found anywhere else. If I knew what the real name of it was, I would really recommend that because it was so good.

Something with those flat rice noodles... as in the beef picture... those are so good. If the sauce is light, and spicy... with those flat rice noodles its just unbelievably good.

A yellow curry or massaman curry would be great, or as mentioned the flat rice noodles are great. As are all the soups.

Man Thai food is great I wanna walk up the road and get some right now @_@

Also there is a really awesome tasting dish with turmeric but I can't think of the Thai name for it, but from taste it seemed like the base ingredient for the sauce was turmeric in coconut milk plus additional spices... Maybe a Thai member here would know it

Actually this dish "bun thit nuong" is a Vietnamese dish..and you even write it in Vietnamese...You sure you are not going to the wrong restaurant?.
Thai food are ok though, maybe we have some flavor similar with Thai so I dont find it special.

Crap. I'm thinking of the Vietnamese place atm.....

The Thai place has something similar to it though..... Can't remember what it's called. Rice noodles, fish broth, cabbage, bean sprouts, green onions, and other fresh vegetables, peanuts, and pork..... Someone wanna give me a hand with the name here?

They also had amazing soups, my favorite being tom saep.

See... I would be totally up for trying out some of this stuff if I knew where to get the ingredients. I haven't found a decent satay sauce in Kingston yet and most of the chinese grocers here have a pitiful selection, not to mention no translations

I hate how hungry I get looking at food threads. Everything always looks so delicious.

I will cast my vote for the following dishes:

Pad See Ew
Pad Kee Mow (as you can see, I'm a fan of the flat rice noodles)
Mango with Sticky Rice
