Hey TL, I was just wondering... I'm getting my first car soon, and if I had to choose between those two, which one is the better choice? I know the RX7 has more HP, is lighter, and supposedly handles better, but it's a rotary and I dunno if I can find any reliable rotary mechanics in Bangkok (Where I will be moving back to study uni ^^). The MR2 on the other hand, is probably cheaper, but is less powerful. It's mid-engined though, and supposedly that's fun . And it's a Toyota... It's as reliable as the world lol. Can you guys share your thoughts on the two cars?

just test drive them both and buy the one that suits you best.

MR2 as much as I love em are gonna need work. They're old, hard to work on, and you probably don't know shit about working on the card. I know stats are great to look at, horse power, torque, skid pad rating, etc. but breaks down into oh I have to drive this daily.

rx-7 is hardcore, not suited for everyone.
mr2 is more fun and cheaper to maintain

which generation of MR2?
are you sure that you want your first car to be a rear-wheel drive that has its engine in the center?these cars have tricky behavior and you have to be extra cautious!
if you are referring to the latest version of MR2 just buy it because it's newer and more reliable although it's much slower!and keep in mind that if you buy the RX-7 you will have to buy one more car since when it's raining you will have to leave your RX-7 in your garage

Neither. Both are shit and a waste of money. Buy a cheap safe car that gets u from A to B. An accord, civic, 626, or something like that.

You should put this in Blog. My brother is a rotor head so he is obsessed with Mazda Rotary Engines. He also has a friend whose whole family owns MR2s.

What model MR2, what model RX-7?

There's three different generations of RX-7; same with MR-2. Each generation is completely different from each other, not to mention the turbo/non-turbo models, etc.

If this is your first car, I recommend against any of the turbo models because it's really easy to do something stupid will all that horsepower.

Are you a hardcore car-person? Will you be doing your own work? If not, do you have money to pay for a mechanic who's willing to work on a somewhat exotic car? Keep all of these questions in mind. I don't know the situation in Thailand, but it may be hard to get parts/good mechanics for these cars.

Both of these vehicles are awesome at the autocross or the track, but keep in mind that you may want to go for something more mild if this is going to be your daily driver.
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The RX-7 is either going to be a FC or a FD, while the MR2 is the 2nd generation, either turbo or N/A. The cars aren't exactly something that's "exotic", but i guess parts can be found from various mechanics since there's quite an import scene over there. I plan to use the car as a daily driver as well, so I'm kind of leaning towards the MR2. But I dunno, is the feeling of driving a rotary that exhilarating that it's worth it ?

Those cars are so exotic here ;p
I would get a MR2. When you're in uni you need something dependable.
These sites might be of more use than a StarCraft site, where the majority of posters look on WCIII as the dense misformed fetus produced during Blizzards latest miscarrige.

wouldn't get either of these if you aren't looking to spend time fixing something. that said i hear rx-7s are terrible in terms of reliability. both have really unique setups and i'd do some research on how reliable the car specific forums are for each because it'll probably be extra difficult to work on without that resource.

by the way, i'm sure you already know this but these are really old cars and you'll have a lot of trouble finding one with under 100k mi (MR2s at least) and there's going to invariably be something wrong about the car. i would just get a newer, more reliable, and most importantly safer car for a daily driver.
the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

3rd gen rx7 hands down

Sure rotaries consume oil daily, but considering how much shops are going to charge you for labor on an mr2 (MR engine is PITA worse than VQ motors in nissans) the tradeoff would be the same pricewise

plus rx7 look, perform, ride better than mr2

unless you are looking at mpg, then go toyota

Get an rx7(any gen) for sure unless you're not wiling to sacrifice a lot of time and money on maintenance. More so than MR2. You'll need reliability mods just to keep your car from blowing up in your face, let alone starting up.

I wrote a huge long post about my love affair with the RX8. (I drove one for three years). Then I realized you said RX7.... T_T. Epic fail. RX8 is so much sexier...
