This has been up on Slickdeals for a while now but I think it's good to let ppl know so people don't end up paying when they don't have to.

basically, if you have access to MSDNAA (basically college students only and possibly alumni), Win7 Pro is probably out for you right now. Computer Science majors most definitely have access, while EECS majors most likely do, too! If you're majoring in somewhere no where close to these fields, like English or Philosophy or something, you're out of luck here.

Basically just search for your school then your department
http://www.msdnaa.net/search/schoolsearch.aspx
If your department is listed, then you have access. If you have trouble logging in, you're going to have to find out from your school (ie. find out who the msdnaa program admin is at your school) how to get access. (I personally had to email someone at my school requesting access. I then received an email from MSDNAA with my login and a generated password)

Turns out (this is for the engineering majors who may not qualify), if you join IEEE, you also get access to MSDNAA! And (this is for CS majors) if you join ACM, you get access as well

note: this is the full legit version, NOT beta or release candidate

So yeah, at the moment I'm running a legit Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. For free.

if you have questions, look through these
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=574457&t=1505441

@funkie, contact someone in one of your IT departments and ask them about your schools MSDNAA program. Also no one can spare you a key because once you install and register these copies you can't register them twice. Meaning you would have to do something illegal to keep it installed and at that point it would be pointless not to just use a generated key.

Woah that's cool. My program looks like it's eligible but I haven't actually started school yet so I don't have a username/pass. I don't have a new computer to put it on or anything and I don't really think it's worth the bother or changing my OS from Vista though.

my buddy got Windows 7 for free, when he got HIS buddy to fix his CPU up for him.

My buddies buddy can put it on like 10 comps, but I've seen Windows 7 and it looks pretty sweet, but I'm not smart with this stuff so I donno.

yeah, I love MSDNAA. Expression Studio, Visual Studio and various Windows operating systems. All for free.

Though the administrator at my university is a bit slow... I had to email them 2-3 times before they finally fixed it. But now I'm also running win7 and loving it .

Lol if i didn't have the risk of gettin my ass sued; I'd post the source code to the NT Research Kernel. But, since I do; I guess the computer science kids will have to get it themselves :p

Edit: I have no idea why you'd want a free copy of their SQL server though... Visual Studio... I mean seriously... (lol and Access, what a joke )

Edit2: the lame thing is; that you can't update the build version if you were running beta... which means you'd have to do a complete reinstall, unless you mounted it as an ISO, and copied and made a link to the new Kernel... Like its not too hard to boot up the Research Kernel, so why not have an update system to replace the full Kernel?

Just get the 32bit. Most software vendors still realize some on 32bit. 64bit only if you want to take advantage of some very specialized applications.

Dang UCSD EE isn't available. Is it available to student IEEE members right now, or not yet? Since I was planning on building a new rig soon, I would shell out the 30$ (I think that's what it was last time I checked) for the membership if it was available before October 22.

You technically aren't supposed to use MSDN product keys after your MSDN license is up (either through school, work, your own subscription etc) but they are just regular OEM keys so there's no way to enforce it

as long as your school is part of msdn then it will always be there, until something like windows 9 comes out anyways.

got windows 7 working with everything except starcraft. The latest intel drivers don't allow me to change the aspect ratio so im playing sc on 16:10

I guess you could upgrade to win7 64bit if your CPU supports it.. I'd probably stick to the 32bit version with 2gb ram and upgrade later.

I just got keys for both versions (incl. XP/Vista ones ^^)

Yeah I've been running this for nearly 2 weeks now, and it's pretty awesome. It of course has lots of minor issues and such, but it blows the shit out of Vista, and it's worth it for all the little options/features/sexiness it has. =)

After a bunch of patches I'm sure it's going to be the new standard, it seems pretty solid.

Thanks, I was aware of MSDNAA already and have just been waiting for Win7 to be released. I've been running the Release Candidate for a couple of weeks now and it hasn't crashed a single time. Lots of cute little features too. Seems like I successfully dodged Vista after all

Have anybody tried registering themselves in the IEEE, and gotten a free Win7 key successfully? And were your school registered in the MSDNAA program?

I'm not sure wether or not to register, as my school is not in the official program.

I currently have 32-bit Vista Home Pro running on my laptop with 4gb of RAM.

My question is: Is it worth it to do a fresh install of Windows Vista 64-bit AND THEN upgrade to Windows 7 x64? It would require me to update bios, drivers, norton 360, backup files, etc etc.

OR should I save my time and just upgrade to the Windows 7 x86 (32-bit)? Will I even be able to notice a difference in performance when upgrading to 7 x86?

why would you fresh install vista 64 bit then install windows 7 over it instead of just fresh installing win 7 64 bit..?

I was under the impression that that was the route I had to take. I assumed it had something to do with Vista 64 pre-configuring all the bios, drivers, when upgrading to Windows 7. I'm guessing that's not necessary? I've never had to upgrade my OS, so I'm completely new to this. Any help would be wonderful!

Win 7 is actually a million times better at supporting hardware after install than Vista. It'll probably install drivers for nearly everything automatically.

Okay guys, time for some serious technical help.

While in the initial stages of installation, a box pops up which says:

"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now."

It then gives me the option of browsing through my computer for whatever it is that it's looking for.

I googled "windows 7 required cd/dvd drive device driver missing" and a TON of stuff came up. It looks like there isn't a single fix but that for many it has to do with sata and IDE stuff. I'm a bit lost and have no idea where to start...

are you sure it comes with 4 keys? if you look at the sick deals forum (link in OP) it says "DO NOT PM ME FOR A LOGIN OR KEY!!! Each login only gets one key per software title - therefore you can't just simply use my login." at the very top.

right so there are actually separate keys for the different versions of Windows 7... like there's a key for 32-bit version, and another key for 64-bit version. Depending on which program you're under, you may also get more options, like under the MSDNAA for IEEE, there's a French version of Windows 7 which has it's own key (which you can use for your regular English copy iirc)

Noob question here...

To create a bootable disc after download the .iso from MS, what do I need to do? Do i extract from the .iso and burn those files? I'm assuming that I don't just burn the .iso because that would be like a DVD within a DVD.

In whatever software you're using, select some kind of "burn image to DVD" option and select your ISO. Indeed it's different than burning the ISO as a file onto the DVD.

Wait, so if you go for the $30 student option, and get a CD, can you use the CD for a clean install or do you have to upgrade from Vista? I'm running XP 32bit right now, but I'd like to get a Win 7 64bit CD and do a clean install if possible.

Found this on another forum.
Dear Students,

Due to a large influx of NON-computing (IT) students joining ACM just to get a copy of Windows 7 Final Release, it had to be taken out of the Microsoft Developer Academic Alliance package offered to ACM Student Members. Windows 7 Beta remains among a LOT of other software.

The Developer Academic Alliance is supposed to be JUST FOR COMPUTING-TYPE STUDENTS. Microsoft offers another package, Dream Spark, for those non-computing students.

I encourage you to check out ACM Student Membership for "real" since we really do offer a great bargain — free e-mentoring, free software from other companies, the digital edition to Communications of the ACM, Crossroads Magazine, etc., etc.

Have a look: [www.acm.org]

Lillian Israel
ACM Director of Membership

Fuck. I try to be proactive by getting my IEEE membership early and end up with this? Fuck.
If I buy it with the student pricing and MSDNAA decides to put it back on I will be super pissed. I shouldn't have to pay for 7 in any moral regard anyway, since Vista is such a POS they should be paying me for using it and dealing with bs every time it updates.

I got the link for 30$ from win471 or something after using a college email.

What is the best version of Windows 7 to get? I see 32bit, 64bit, Home Premium, Professional upgrade.

Do I need original Vista to install or can I do a clean install from the Windows 7 file?

I got the link for 30$ from win471 or something after using a college email.

What is the best version of Windows 7 to get? I see 32bit, 64bit, Home Premium, Professional upgrade.

Do I need original Vista to install or can I do a clean install from the Windows 7 file?

if you know your processor can handle 64 bit, then get that

home premium includes all the windows eye candy and what not which is fine for most users. Professional includes some extra things that involve network and server support.

you can upgrade from vista or do a clean install

To be sure, I can put Windows 7 on a wipeout PC without having owned any previous Windows correct?

You get access to 32 bit and 64 bit windows. They use separate keys.

One of my CS Professors slapped a bunch of Windows 7 CDs with keys to the Enterprise edition and said take one if you want it. I pretty much have Windows 7 Ultimate...but with the Enterprise brand.
It takes an idiot to do cool things.

I downloaded it but I was unable to do a clean install. According to the website you need to order the actual windows 7 dvd which is like 20 dollars. Does anyone know a way around this?

a simple search of "windows 7 upgrade burn disc" would have found it for you

Yeah. I actually got the oscdimg.exe file from a different website i stumbled upon while googling. I was unable to find it in that microsoft file. After that it was pretty easy.
