what the fuck did you just say? O________O

your hypothetical deal is so unrealistic, there are about 0 NBA contracts that work that way... and why the fuck would Odom be dumb enough to accept that? there's nobody stupid enough to think ANYONE is going to pay Odom 15 million per year when he's 32 like you're suggesting. that's not even a believable hypothetical contract.

So Lamar gets 3 years at 25, and a 2 million buyout for the 4th year, and 33 total. So basically if the lakers think he's done for the last year, he gets a $27 million 3 year deal (but don't have to pay the $2 million until the end), otherwise they choose to pay him $8 million for year 4. So lamar loses money if he's worth less than $6 million in 3 years, gains money if he's worth between $6 to $8 million, and loses money in the odd case he's worth more than $8 million.

This is a pretty dumb deal for him, if he's going to account for the laker's creative accounting he should be expecting more in return for what's likely to be a 3 year $27 million deal. If he's going to accept that, if I were Jerry Buss I would offer him a 5 year $50 million deal, first 3 years worth 20 million, and a 2 million buyout for the 4th and 5th years, last 2 worth 30 million.

Ya well, fortunately for all Lakers fans out there (not me), you are not Jerry Buss. The man clearly knows what he is doing and you don't run a successful business by overpaying guys who are going to be too old to produce what they should be worth. Odom's agent screwed up big time trying to play hardball with the Lakers when they offered him very fair deals, and now he has to pay the price. His contract is still very fair.

That's exactly how the contract works, I just changed the variables values. 3 year value, extended value/length, to be specific. The implicit argument is that the deal looks big ($33 million!) but the value won't matter since he's probably going to get bought out if he ages into a below average player. I lowered the guaranteed money but "compensated" by making total value look big with no intention of paying the money at the end. If he plays at a $2 million value at the end of his career they can just buy him out and renegotiate or find someone else, and there's nothing he can do. The buyout barrier has no deterring value.

Also the funny thing is that the lakers don't have to pay a dime over their previous offer to buy him out. If he were an aluminum can he'd be the one paying the rebate and the lakers would claim it as a tax deduction.
Edit: to clarify, first comparison is literal second is metaphorical. If you're going to get confused let it be over a metaphorical argument.

4 years 33 million is just 8 million per year. Considering initially he was looking for 10, it's smaller... plus the deal is much smaller than similar-impact players got this summer (aka, Turkoglu had a similar impact/importance on his team and is of a similar age but got 50 million), hell... even Bargnani got 50 million... Anyways, when they don't pick up the 4th year option, he still leaves with $27 million... so the Lakers will end up saving 6 million on the 4th year by not taking that option.

What I don't get is your random hypothetical (5 year 50 million with only 20 million guaranteed). That's just a really stupid example.

Guess having mono sucks for your basketball career.

Was that really a major factor?

Same thing happened to me this summer. T_T Could not dunk for the first time in four years (or even touch the rim) and took it's taken most of the summer to get around the same level as before. Even taking a shower had me out of breath. Q_Q

But compared to typical basketball injuries that isn't bad, no lingering effects and it only lasts ~2 months.

I remember in the olympics thinking Sun Yue could play at least as a back up in the NBA. He was athletic and could shoot. If he played smart I don't see why he wouldn't compete with Luke Walton.

To the best of my knowledge, Yi is going to be the starting PF for the Nets this coming season and has looked really good in an Asian league this summer (obviously have to take the competition into account).

http://netsarescorching.com/2009/07/30/yi-playing-well-over-in-china/

Although there are apparently many rumors going on right now about a Glen Davis trade involving Yi as well.

Well it's hard for you to adjust and improve in a new environment when every once in a while you get shit on by your health with no permanent cure and there is nothing you can do about it. Mono stays in your system and comes out once in a while to fuck you over in the ass. I stayed away from beer pong games in college cause of this shit.

Yi will most likely never be more than a role player in the NBA. Someone who can probably end up getting you 12-15 ppg and 6-7 boards per game playing about ~25 minutes. That seems to me to be his ceiling. His defense isnt too great, doesn't have any particular playmaking abilities, all he does is score points and get rebounds. Very one dimensional player.

*edit*

The reason he was so hyped IMO is because of his size and athleticism, he can be much more than he is, but just doesn't seem to be very talented. The reason also that he got hyped up is because of the above factor (size + athleticism) he has been able to dominate the game in China; however as now can be seen, this does not translate into NBA potential because he's going up against people who also have size and athleticism. There are only a handful of Chinese players (maybe not even a handful) that can compete with Yi physically, but most NBA players can do that.... so playing in the NBA has really exposed the fact that Yi is actually a one dimensional player.

Not to mention Dukies rarely get hyped because of exceptional size or athleticism. They usually have good heads on their shoulders and understand the game better than most college players.

Grant Hill was on track to become the next "MJ" till that injury.

Honestly I think he was more of the next Pippen type player, at least thats how I remember him being characterized. He was kind of a more all-around guy... he'd never be the #1 guy on a title team, but he'd be the absolute top #2 guy on a championship team (aka like what Pippen was to Jordan), plus he was an amazingly tenacious defender.

In fact their career lines are eerily similar. Although Grant Hill had "bigger" stats for the first half of his career because he was the #1 guy on his team while Pippen was the #2 guy, but check it out:

Points:
Pippen - 16
Hill - 18

Rebounds:
Pippen - 6.4
Hill - 6.6

Assists:
Pippen - 5
Hill - 4.7

Steals:
Pippen - 2
Hill - 1.5

Blocks:
Pippen - .8
Hill - .6

FG%
Pippen - 47%
Hill - 48%

FT%
Pippen - 70%
Hill - 76%

Well, Pippen was the #1 on a pretty good team (before MJ came back) and I think both COULD have been that on a championship team, but I agree with your overall assessment that they're very similar players. Although the year before his injury, Hill really had a great scoring season and dropped 30+ 29 times. He was also a triple double machine with the likes of Jason Kidd.

just watching Marbury's stream right now. he says he got an offer to play in China, and he asked the stream people to decide whether he should go to China to talk to the team and see whether he should go or not.

he's going (the stream people told him to go)... it'll be interesting to see if there's a news on ESPN in the next day or two about this.
