I played stepmania a lot, and that sort of idea came to me way back then, actually. I saw some people making stepfiles that were just utter bullshit and didn't fit the music very well. But the community in SM quickly moved away from that for the most part, and become very technical (trying to match every occurance of a sound, sometimes tailoring the patterns to the melody, etc.) And the maps get harder because of following the music even more closely than before. That that was also partly because of the fact that the overall skill of players was improving, so the stepfiles got harder to compensate. Yeah I used to play SM too, I remember when every chart I played had like 40-50 second long deathstreams and shit just for the sake of filling space :/

What ever happened to mapping for fun or because you liked the song? Too many maps nowadays don't really suit the song, they're way too hard for songs that shouldn't be mapped that difficult. It's like half the mappers want to be that one guy who makes the map that Cookiezi can't beat or something. The song should dictate the map imo, rather than the map being forced. Maybe I'm just too old-school and don't "get it" with these new maps or something lol I can agree with your sentiment about the anime songs or the songs that are hard for the sake of being hard, But I think that really a lot of the songs from any time are hit and miss. There are some awesome songs prior to 2010, but a lot of mediocre ones. The difference is that the mediocre maps from 2011 seem to be more playable or fun to most people. I've played maybe every single beatmap from packs 1 through 112 so far, I can really say that there is a lot of crap to get through, but I've certainly enjoyed a lot of the songs as well.

I've also found that my view of what was a good simfile/map changed as my skill changed. Some stuff that I used to find really fun, or feel like it was really matching the song feel terrible, or feel like they really dont match nearly as well as they should now.

But If anyone has any experience with them, do you think that Cherry MX Blue switches would be better than say Black or Brown for osu? Apparently blue is supposed to be more precise than the others? I know cookiezi and Rucker happen to use Razer Blackwidow which use Blue switches. Though if I got a keyboard probably wont be the Blackwidow.

It's difficult to tell when your key registers when you press on it since it's non-tactile which can really screw up your accuracy. I used one for a week before switching to a keyboard with blue switches and it feels a lot better imo. Yeah I'm probably going to get a Das keyboard with either blue or brown.

Is the Leopold that much better? Because I believe I can get a student discount on Das Keyboard. Either way I just realized TL has a huge thread on mechanical keyboards that I can go through, probably should have checked there first.

Before anyone calls me out, I'd like to back up my claims by saying I've played Osu with over 6 different switch types and MX Browns and Blues are definitely the best. Pics of my mountain of boards available on request, I guess. EDIT: Forgot about build quality. Basically anything that's mass produced today has the same OEM for the most part and are plate mounted, which decreases variability among the different boards. Just pick whichever one looks better to you and whether you want a numpad or not.

I've heard some say that MX Reds are great (read: dlovan), but linear switches suck for Osu due to a lack of tactile feedback. When you play hidden or FL or anything that limits your vision, you're going to want to know when you hit a note and whether it actually registered. The Das is also glossy, so you'll probably get smudges on it. On the other hand, Das does have free shipping. *no I do not own a mechanical keyboard*
