I play (or played as of May 15) with mouse, and only left click. I will fuck up bad if I use two buttons to do streams, surviving on only 1 button. I can do many 5 star beatmaps using this extremely suboptimal configuration. It really depends on your mouse pointer accuracy, with this configuration only certain crazy streams will kill you.

Just do whaever you want. Unless you're trying to be some sort of osu! god, you can do just fine with purely mouse for both moving and clicking. I don't use the keyboard at all and I've somehow managed to be level 98... it's just for fun anyways. Using only mouse, I can still do plenty of very hard maps with streams and everything. http://osu.ppy.sh/u/544410 <--- me.
Or you can leftclick singles and alternate click and a keyboard button for streams. That's what I do whenever I play mouse, since clicking is more intuitive for me but I can't alternate two mose buttons quickly because of the way I hold my mouse.
The main reason I'm thinking about making the switch is because my friend recently upgraded his tablet, and is looking to sell off his old one... Toying with the idea of buying it and using it purely for osu

Tablet it pretty fun, you should try it. Initial skill loss from switching from mouse to tablet+kb can be pretty large though.

Thing is with games like this even though you have a skill gap when you pick it up, you re-learn to play FAR quicker than it took to get there the first time. Your brain just has to rewire a bit to learn to apply the skills you learned playing the old way to the new form of playing the game.
Been lurking this thread for a super long time, but I've never felt good enough to be able to offer advice or post my scores (because they are really bad, and still are). Today, I finally finished a map that I was really proud of, though, and thought I'd show you all. Obviously not a FC and I got a ton of 50s, but it's the first time I've ever finished a map that seemed hard. I use mostly mouse, but switch to keyboard for fast streams.
Now I'm trying to finish this map, I know I can do it but for some reason always fail a little over 1/4th of the way through. http://osu.ppy.sh/s/50405
Oh yeah I finished this one that I thought was pretty hard about a month ago, not sure how hard you all think it is. + Show Spoiler +

That song tends to jump from slider to slider pretty quickly. Missing the slider ends will often cause you to fail abruptly, so make sure you've finished the slider before jumping to the next note.

Thanks for the tip! I quickly got halfway and then 3/4 after putting it to practice, but now my arms are getting really tired. I must have played that map over 100 times today.
D: Despite playing osu! for quite some time now, I'm still worse than the average osu player (based on what I've seen in multiplay). Always end up getting 6th to 8th lol
I am really not a fan of multi, it doesn't fit my play style at all. For one, I am really inconsistent, so the chance that I'll do well first time playing a map is unlikely, I frequently will just miss a note for no reason. Second, I hate having to pace myself to others and play through an entire song I'm either not enjoying or want to FC. And at least one of those two always applies.

I treat multi's differently than I treat playing the game normally. I treat multis as a way to discover new maps, or hang out with some people and relax and not give a shit about how I play.
I'm somewhat inconsistent too. Although I tend to do well first time on a map, I still often get random misses and what not. But when I play a multi, I'm not trying to do my best or FC it or anything.

I think I was around or lower than your skill when I really started posting scores here.
