Also, I've been playing Mountain of Faith and Perfect Cherry Blossom for while now. Such fun games, I'd recommend them to anyone. Mountain of Faith feels as though it has smoother control. Perfect Cherry Blossom seems to run at a faster pace, yet the bullet patters aren't as tight as MoF. PCB seems just a touch easier (on normal), so it might be a better to start with.

Touhou 9, Phantasmagoria of Flower View is designed for multiplayer but it's not working very well. MoF is bad SA is very very good. I've cleaned all of these in normal (hard EoSD and IN) and also cleaned their extra stage. I'm currently working to finish PCB in hard and PCB phantasm mode (it's like super extra mode).

Not to mention, it used a new system for power ups, bombs, and lives that a lot of fans didn't really like. Though, 11 (Subterranean Animism)kind of redeems the series, apparently 12(UndefinedFantastic Object) really brings Touhou back to how it was, looking forward to its release. Strange, I found PCB easier than MoF. It took me a couple weeks to get to Stage 4 on normal in MoF, then the first session I ever played of PCB I reached Stage 4. Of course, I did use a continue or 2, but I got past stage 1 and 2 totally unscathed on my first run. But I guess it depends on which setting you play on. Plus, the fact that MoF was the first TouHou game I ever played made the learning curve steeper I guess.

A few of my friends and I play that game, so maybe you and I can get online games going :o. There's a lot of controversy over this, but IaMP is objectively the better game. I would say SWR is better casually, though. Consider that in Japan, which has more offline tournaments than you can count, it's harder to get a 32-man SWR tournament set up than it is to get a 64-man IaMP tournament. In terms of the shmups, ease is around this: Imperishable Night (If you've never played a Touhou game before, this is a good way to ease in) Perfect Cherry Blossom Mountain of Faith Subterranean Animism Embodiment of Scarlet Devil Shoot the Bullet <--Fuck this game Obviously, depending on what bullet patterns you're comfortable with, the difficulty can change, but I would say that's pretty accurate.

Harder =/= Better Things like what flandre mentions, along with the removal of gameplay elements like graze and power-dependent Point of Collection detract from the experience in MoF. Fortunately, graze returns in Subterranean Animism (and good grazing gives PoC like collection, which somewhat makes up for the fact that you don't have to have full power to have PoC).

MoF really put me off, the feel is just different and the stages/bullet patterns didn't really interest me as much as the previous games. I finally gave SA a try though and I'm working on beating it now, although that mostly consists of me dying on the first or second stage repeatedly. ~Also, I have it on a rather unreliable source that the Touhou fighting games are a joke. I should probably give it a try and form some sort of valid opinion, but meh.
