It's like there's a cult built around it, with tons of weird Touhou related videos, pictures, and tons and tons of remix albums of the original songs. Impossible to explain properly imo, in terms of values that just attract people at first, it is the fact that the game is fun and has good music. In terms of its continuing popularity the way that it works as a doujin production gives spinoff works great leverage, the fact that Japan actually has a culture for such things also made it possible. Scoring mechanism got so much better though, MoF is just like bombing runs. SA didn't improve too much on that though, ends up that in UFO we get bombs detached from power again.

Primary reasons I've gathered; it's fun, it's challenging, and there is basically no competition. If you want a market with a decent variety of bullet hell games you pretty much have to live in Japan.

You'd figure Shinigami no Shiro would do better though.

Define easily download, I can hop on share and find a bunch after a bit, it just won't mean much. Every comiket you see 2~3 danmaku type games, for example, they just don't have that kind of popularity. Shinigami no Shiro was the best one I can think of really. But at any case, there 'are' plenty of doujin games of a similar nature, so the competition isn't lacking in any way, especially considering there are relatively few things you can change with this genre. Doujinstyle, iirc, is one site that does a lot of doujin games, simply checking for the shooting section there will yield you plenty of games. To clarify a bit, I suppose, to say that there are no competition is faulty, as people still make games of this kind. A fair amount, at that, easily found if you just start batch downloading off every doujin event torrents. It is just kind of pointless to try to name any since I can't remember even one case where I saw them releasing a sequel, let alone being anticipated the way Touhou trial versions and such are. If you define competition to be games of a similar caliber in terms of popularity, then the obvious answer is no, but that doesn't answer the question of why Touhou is popular, it is just a testament to its popularity. EDIT - Off the top of my head, C75 had like 2 or 3 scrolling shooters, C74 fewer, C73 around that number. So what, 5 or so a year at least with Touhou being a yearly release, not counting commercial games?

I especially liked playing as sakuya (spamming flying knives is always fun) and remilia (zooming around the map is also fun :D). IaMP is very easy to understand. This game is hard as fuck to play well. I really prefer SWR if I just want to mash buttons with friends.
